The whole thing about the ordeal with the wet bandits is all in Kevin's head is kind of ridiculous and is debunked when Peter finds Harry's gold tooth on the floor. As for old man Marley showing up to save Kevin with his shovel, that is easily explained in the window scene with Buzz when he talked about how every night he walks up and down the streets salting the sidewalks. Marley was out salting the sidewalks, like every night, he sees Kevin run across the road towards a neighbor's house and hears him say "I'm Calling the cops" and two men chase him across the street. He follows with his shovel in hand and when he enters the house and hears what the bandits plan to do, he takes action and saves Kevin.

I watched this moving 100s of times growing up and always believed it was Santa teaching Kevin a lesson. Kinda of a weird Christmas Miracle. He passed his test and his family arrived on Christmas aka the Miracle. That means his mom would have made it just the same but due to a mother's love she couldn't wait but never would have made it earlier. She arrived exactly when she was supposed to.

I always liked how the relationship between Kevin and Old Man Marley developed, from the cartoonish to the two really fleshed out personalities. So that theory about time travel really appeals to me. It is interesting that Marley makes sure that Kevin gets home after rescueing him, but Marley apparently never questions about Kevin being alone. It's as though Marley knows Kevin will be alright alone in his house, safe until his mom gets home in the morning. Marley must've already known he was ok, because he and Kevin are indeed the same person.

  • @Firepuma27

One detail that Old Man Marley had was a hand injury that healed over the course of the film. It starts out wrapped in gauze, gradually becomes a band aid, and ends with it fully healed. Even the theme heard when he has a scene changes from scary to happy.

I could actually add more weight to your theory of the first movie's events unfolding based on a wish. Since Santa is the one delivering his wish, of course, he did it to teach Kevin the value of family during the holidays. The wish was breaking when he yelled for his mom then mom hearing it and responding in a frantic to make efforts to get home ASAP. The rest of his family shown up because he goes to a Santa think he is an agent that will pass the message to the "real Santa." He tells the agent, he wants all his family back and if he has time, Uncle Frank as well. That's when the family shown up shortly after Kate but not Uncle Frank's family, making it so that was the wish that couldn't be fulfilled but his immediate family coming back is granted. Santa also made the Wet Bandits happen as well as to teach Kevin his lesson and regret wishing his family away which is why they survived every punishment and traps that should have by all rights killed them. They were supernatural entities sent by Santa to teach Kevin how much he needs and would miss his family as he was scared to be without them when bad things were happening and he couldn't be comforted by them. Yes, he attacked them to defend his home but they survived traps without serious or mortal injury in a cartoony way. You also forgot to point out Kate realized it was a wish in the sequel, responding to Kevin this time wishing for his own vacation with "You got your wish last year, maybe you'll get it again this year!"

The whole "it's Kevin's imagination/Kevinception" theory is pretty cool and actually works if you take the film as a standalone but it wouldn't explain the sequel--they'd never have known/recognised/despised Kevin when they saw him on the streets in NYC. But it WOULD explain why the house isn't trashed when Kevin's parents get home, which has always been inexplicable since things were literally broken and torched.

It could be Kevin's coping mechanism when his parents keep abandoning him, and only him lol. He just imagines a battle with these two guys each time. From the first one, those cops never question Kevin or know anything about what he did to trap them. Parents never find out either. Can't really remember what happens at the end of the 2nd one.

Number one is a theory? 🤔 I always just assumed that was what it was. Ever since the first time I saw this movie I thought that was the whole point! Kevin makes a wish that his family would disappear.... And it happens. A Christmas wish. And throughout the movie he learns that he needs his family because family is everything. I thought that was the whole plot of the movie 🤷🏼‍♂️ And now you're telling me that that's not the case and that it's a theory? Oh Lawd!

One Home Alone theory I have is: Mr. McCallister is the president of a home security company with his brother being the vice President. In Home Sweet Home alone, the family uses a McCallister home security system and possibly after the events of the first film the neighborhood turned to them to protect their homes. I do agree that the wet bandits could be working with Mr. McCallister and the robberies are a way to promote the company

In the 33 years that I have watched Home Alone, I never stopped to think that it's never explained in the film or the sequel, what Kevin's dad does for a living in order for them to have such wealth. Watched this the other day with the fam and we stopped it several times to discuss... I also wondered what the heck the family does for a living. Even in the sequels their immense wealth is never explained. Suppose it wasn't considered relevant. Always bugged me that the plumber van just sits around the same neighborhood every single day and even carry around their loot. Remember they have to unload the van before coming back on the infamous trap night.

A better theory than the Jigsaw one, that just thought up, is that the Home Alone movies and The Good Son are in the same universe. As for how it works, the Home Alone movies unleashed Kevin's sadistic bloodlust and to protect him from future Wet Bandit attacks the government puts him into the Witness Protection Program not knowing he's now a psychopath.

I have always wondered how Kevin went from 8 to 10. In the first one he says he is 8. In the 2nd one they make a reference that it is the next year and Kevin says he is 10. How did he skip over being 9 years old???

My theory is that Old Man Marley really was the South Bend Shovel Slayer. -Each interaction with Kevin, he glares at him in internal conflict. The first time, especially. Like, he's thinking: "I could kill this kid and no one is here to notice." -It's never fully explained about the issues with him and his family. Why does his son want nothing to do with him? -He's pretty darn good with that Shovel. He clubbers the wet bandits with it with such precision. Doesn't even bat an eye. Like he's done it before. -We know why Kevin doesn't talk to the cops at the end, but why doesn't Marley stay to talk to them and explain anything?

I like your theory! I think the imagination one holds water too if you think of Macaulay Culkin’s character in Uncle Buck, who saw imaginary bad guys at the front door also. Plus the fact that when his parents got home there didn’t seem to be any trace of the shenanigans that took place.

    11. Alarm clocks are rare and very expensive in the Home Alone universe. The McCallisters are a family with money. They live in a mansion in Chicago and take extended family on vacations during the holidays. The house is full of teens and pre-teens that clearly have difficulty waking up early. This partially led to the family experiencing the worst-case scenario from sleeping in late, ultimately ruining the trip to Paris for the entire family. Despite all of this, there is STILL only one alarm clock in the entire household in the 2nd movie.

    - The movie Angels with filthy souls does probably not belong to Peter.. It may belong to uncle Frank, since it is probably the movie that Kevin want to watch but can't. - If all events were on Kevin's imagination, why does Peter finds Harry's gold thoot at the end ? - It's not Peter that bring everyone to Paris, but their Brother who intend them.
