10 Things Everyone Forgot About The 1971 Ford Mustang!
The 1971 Ford Mustang is one of the most unloved generations of the legendary pony car.
The Ford Mustang is more than just a car. It is a respected brand that dates back to 1964 and has ever been active in the automotive world. The 2024 Ford Mustang is here, and it is the most technologically advanced pony car ever made. But, years before that, back in 1971, and a couple of years after the first-generation Mustang debuted, Ford gave the muscle car a controversial midlife refresh. Today, the 1971 models are sought-after examples in the used car space, with prices soaring high for select models from 1971.

I absolutely love the 1971-1973 Mustang Sportroof. It's one of my all time dream cars. I fell in love with it at age 15 in 1974 when a neighbor bought one. That high rear deck and almost horizontal rear window blew me away. And nearly 50 years later, it still does.

I once owned a 1970 Mach-1 with the 428CJ, but today I prefer the 1971 through '73 sportsroof bodies. They look like they're doing 150MPH standing still. I never understood why they were maligned as they were.
Bullshit , if you have ever sat in one you know that the interior is extremely small in comparison to the exterior , but I must admit that the style is timeless and it looks as modern as tomorrow.

Well, I guess size really does matter! 😁 At 6' 3" and 275 lbs I've never had any problems getting in or out of '71 - '73 Mustangs. The seats are comfortable and I have all the legroom I need. Now, if you're talking about the back seat I totally agree. Anyone over the age of 4 just won't fit. Even sideways doesn't really work. I've always thought of the Big Body Mustangs as fitting 2 1/2 people! 😁👍

You must be a big person because the interior is not small
You guys might of forgotten of it.. This car is super cool and its not forgotten at all
Actually, the T5 name was used in Germany since the very beginning of Mustangs, in 65.
One thing most people didn't realize was a fifth of Jim Beam fit perfectly in the center console

@@c.j.cleveland7475 Most likely, you will be in a wheel chair for life paralysed from the neck down being fed, washed and cleaned by handlers
Son ! You are too young to accurately appreciate this car..
It was still a lot smaller than a full size American car of the same era. Which by the way was what every kid who took driver's ed learned on. It was a different time dude. The same mods that helped the original Mustang and every other American car handle i.e. fat tires & front and rear anti-sway bars, and properly valved shocks. It would still understeer at the limit but would also be able to go into a very controlled 4 wheel drift quite easily. It was also the last year for compression and I was buying 104 octane Sunoco 260 through the mid-70's.
The 71-73s weren't all that big. They were more wide and low compared to earlier models. The fastback version gives the illusion of it being a big car, but if you look at the notchback Grande, you can see that they weren't as big as people think
Ah this brings back memories of my '72 Mach 1 with the 351 Cleveland engine.

I had the 71 63D fastback 351C 2bbl for 18 years bought it for a song, used it, improved it, sold it to buy a place in the mountains. No regrets, still got the old antiques that last! And are actually worth something 😊😊😊

I never drove a 71-73 Mustang, but used to own a 71 Cougar (same platform). With heavy duty shocks, thicket front and rear sway bars, and wider 60 series tires mounted on junkyard score 14x7 inch steel rims, it didn’t handle bad. I enjoyed trashing it.
Most of what you don't like about the mach 1 is just what I like about it!
The best Mustang ever built fantastic looking car and i love ❤it great show thank you very much from Sydney Australia
Always loved Mustangs.I used to ride to 7th grade basketball practice in my coach's brand new 1964&1/2 mustang. I've owned 2 of them. The newest one was a 1986 GT. I never found anything to dislike about them, including the 1971 which was beautiful with great performance options. Excellent Posting. Thank You
Drove a 1971 Fastback back in the day - had a factory 429 SCJ with a C6 auto. It would drop down 15' of second gear rubber stock - was a fast car. It got 6 mpg - but gas was 35 cents a GALLON :)
You didn't tell me anything I forgot about the Mustang.
Always reminds me of that movie gone in sixty seconds, the original movie 👌😁👍🏴
Make no mistake! The 429 SCJ and the Boss 351 would run. Both of these engines begged for a bigger cam.
It's of course going up in price now.
You didn't mention the one-of-one 1971 Mustang Boss 302. Just an interesting side note.
@jackylsmith8138

Ya that was supposed to be destroyed, but they just pulled out the engine and sold it.
Another factor in horsepower is that when you get up in 375 plus like the tourque from the 428 cj 429 cj and scj they have enough power to rip the unibody apart, seen it, need some reinforcement for all that awesome energy, great memories for us who owned them 😊😊😊😊
I’ve own a 71 grande 351 c 4 v fast ass car also I’m restoring a 71 sportsroof 351 c 4 v these cars don’t get the respect of the classic car world
It was the 1971 model that made me fall inlove with Mustang and their were alot of them in Jamaica but the fuel crisis of 73 spoiled the show. Today their is only one I now about on the roads.
One of the dearest Mustang is the 1972 Ford Mustang HO. It was a slightly detuned Boss 351, Ford only made a few hundred of these. They made over 1,300 Boss 351
My dad worked for Holman and Moody from the late 60's to the early 70's. He told me about a German client that wanted a Mustang that would blow the doors off anything on the Autobahn. They built it and got pulled over/roadblocked for test driving it on Wilkinson Boulevard, going over 180 mph. Dunno if it's true, but I would like to believe that it is.
Had a '71 Mach 1 351C 4 speed yellow in color. Come 1980, I wanted a motorcycle. Sold the Mustang in mint condition for $2800. Went down to the local Honda dealership and bought a new CB750F. Dumb move.
I think the reviews are given by what us big guys call small man's syndrome. I have 1 of these cars, ive owned all of them up to73. Up to 69 mustangs were (like the ausies put it) nothing but a falcon in a suit. The cars were a structural wimp. The power of the 70s would have turned it inside out. 69/70 were a little better but still structural weak. Finally ford got up to speed in 71,they built around there new power plants a car that can easily deal with 500ft,pounds of torq out of the factory. And large enough to acomadate a 6ft200 pound guy like me😂. But I get it the little people can't even reach the top kitchen cubbies😂😂😂.
The only draw back to having one was you can't see well out the back, have to park smart
So, I'm a owner of a 1971 grande coupe with 302cui engine.. Amazing car with a beautiful window a the rear..
Iaccoca hated it that is reason enough to love ❤️ every single thing about it
By '71, the Mustang had turned into a 'Poor Man's Thunderbird' and sales suffered as a result. This is the generation of Mustang that made buyers happy to see the Mustang II! 😂
They're just about the same size as a 2023 Mustang, give or take an inch. They are lower though, which gives them that long sleek look. Bigger than the previous generations and other generations that came after, but so are the modern Mustangs starting with the S197. I own both, but if you don't, look at the specs.
Okay I've been waiting for someone to talk about the beast of 1971 Mustangs that I owned, yea the Boss 351 was hot, but not as hot as the Mach1 429 SCJ not to me mistaken for 429 CJ which pops up 99.9% of the time. The difference between the 429 SUPER COBRA JET W/ DRAG PAK and COBRA JET was the SCJ was a solid lifter cam like the Boss 351, The SCJ was rated at 375hp for insurance, it got air & gas from a Holley 780cfm double pumper carb, pumped out more like 450hp came with C6 auto 3:91 Posi traction 9inch, trans cooler, no air, staggered shocks, I hate that I sold mine after having it 12yrs, I was young, dumb didn't realize how special it was they made 500 SCJs to this day the place I've seen one like I had a real "SCJ" is rolling cross the block on Barrett Jackson sold for 176,000 and no the boss 351 was not faster than the 429 super cobra Jet solid lifter, mine was the same grabber green as the one in your video.
Those mustangs were AWESOME! Sadly after that we got the Mustang 2 or a pinto with the mustang name. And spare me the "it saved the mustang " I hated them. It was for a generation raised during gas shortages. ALL CARS WERE DOWNSIZED.
The 71 to 73 Mustang used the same wheelbase as the Ford Grand Torino..
I LEARNED HOW TO DRIVE IN A MUSTANG.
number 2 and number 4 are the same.
Had a red 71 fastback 302 not a Mach 1 swapped it out with a 351. Cleavend out of a 71 Mercury Cyclone
Ford didn't learn anything from the T-bird. That was supposed to be a Corvette rival, and look what it turned into.
How did Ford compete with * both * the GM Firebird/Camaro * and * the Corvette at the same time with one car? Introduce the '71 Mustang! Problem solved with one car model - Easy Peazy, let's grab a beer on the way for the weekend...!
69 70 fastbacks perfect looks and still power before gas crunch took v8 engine and made them 200ho boat anchors
They needed back up cameras then, the rear window was a bitch to see out of!
Yeah I like a good scoop, a good scoop of ice cream.
The ultimate option was the holly 950 cfm NASCAR three barrel carb .
$200,000!!!! Man I'm playing the powerball from now on! Who knows I just might win and I'll be able to own my dream car!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bogus pics and vids! Mustang with a blower motor ? Another pic shows a late Gen mach 1 interior...I quit watching at that point! BS !
The backseat was tiny and cramped 😂
The best shape mustangs 1971 -1973 big for the time but if you put next to a new mustang about the same size
The back seat was cramped and small. My mom had one.
The negative comments in this video about this generation are simply absurd. "Bigger than my apartment"? You know, if you're too short to reach the foot pedals, maybe this car is not for you. The prior pony cars had much to dislike. Try putting a 429 in a '66 to '70. This generation is by far the best looking with many improvements, The engineers got it right and understood what the market wanted. You take issue with hidden wipers? Really? "Surprise"? Face it; you want one.

That 351 boss Cleveland would shut them all down at the drag strip 330 horse Ford was sandbagging that number that boss was putting 450 to the ground son

Ford would be about right saying it made 330hp @ 5400rpm. Thing is it could make peak hp much higher than that. Clevelands typically make around 400hp by 6000rpm & 450 if you take them to 6500rpm.
I have a 73 Mustang convertible. I'de like to learn more about it like value etc. Thank You
I wish I could forget those cheese box Mustangs existed.
