Where in the bible OT or NT does it say that to read and understand this book you must be a scholar, theologian, spend months or years at seminaries and taking religion classes to understand or explain bible theologies, was this also expected of people in previous centuries? Of course not, because now they do to try to make sense of all the errors, nonsense, contradictions, fictions etc otherwise the bible easily and numerous times damns itself as nonsense, it needs apologists and excuses makers to keep it out of irrelevancy and the trash bin.

Yet another reason to take the texts at their word : Jesus and Paul expected it all to go down within a few years. When it didn't, it was too embarrassing to omit the promise of return, so Christians have to live with Jesus putting things off for millenia much like the Jews have had to live with having no temple and everything being metaphor.

Hi Derek great videos. I recently found this comparison and would love to hear one of these guys interpretation. So in the wisdom of Solomon ch 2 it says man made a covenant with death because he reasoned to himself that his spirit would return to the air after death. Well that sounds just like Paul's Thessalonians rapture doctrine. Not sure what year wisdom was written but if after Thessalonians was this guy directly calling Paul out on his Thessalonians letter. I just recently found this and thought it was interesting I mean some translations it's almost word for word comparison.

At the 1:14:48 mark where the discussion is on Jesus being a false prophet, He said there are some standing here today that will not taste death until they see the Son of Man come into his kingdom. Well if you read the next chapter, Matthew 17, Jesus climbs a high mountain and transforms/transfigures into his true form as a divine being, then Moses, and Elijah come down. Then, God the Father tells Peter, James, and John “This is my beloved Son, listen to him”, in an audible voice. Well shoot, I would say Jesus revealed to 3 men standing there the Son of Man in his true form and a piece of the divine kingdom to come. How could this PhD miss that or not even acknowledge it?

For those who believe the bible: Interesting that in Romans 13:1 and Titus 3:1 Paul was unambiguous that the authorities are appointed by God and MUST be obeyed,. No exceptions. Yet Jesus was crucified by the Romans for disputing their rule and claiming to be the rightful King of the Jews. And later in Act 5:27-29 the apostle Peter directly disobeyed the authorities leading to his death. Seems the biblical writers can't get their stories straight.

I admit that I didn't watch part 1 or this entire episode. I just listened to the first part on #6 and had heard enough. My goodness was this lame. God does not simply know everything that we do, He has sovereignly ordained all that comes to pass. If He did not, He would not be God. Madison is acting like he is saying something shocking when this is just plain 2K year old basic Christian theology 101. In fact, he softens things by acting like God simply notices. And yes, we are indeed accountable to God for every thought, word, and action of ours. How is this remotely an odd contention? Our words, thoughts, and deeds hurt people. Sin matters. The only reason it seems odd to people is because of how sinful we are. We have learned to rationalize and minimize our sin. But God is infinitely holy and He will never accept these rationalizations. As far as the fact that not all theists agree on everything, not all non-theists agree on everything either. According to Madison's logic, non-theistic worldviews must all therefore be false in light of this fact. How can you guys not see how illogical so many of Derek's guests are? It is like most of them couldn't pass a freshman level logic course. They almost never turn their critiques around on themselves. And the fact that Muslims and Jews don't agree with us proves nothing. There is solid evidence against both worldviews. Hence, we should reject them. There is an enormous amount of evidence in favor of Biblical Christianity and no piece of fatal evidence against it. Game over. So, there is objective evidence along the lines of what Madison requires. He and all the skeptics simply reject it. I have gone over much of this evidence with many people on this very forum and they either just stop responding to me or degenerate into sophomoric ad hominem. What does that tell you?

Yeah, no. *The Enuma Elish would later be the inspiration for the Hebrew scribes who created the text now known as the biblical Book of Genesis.* Prior to the 19th century CE, the Bible was considered the oldest book in the world and its narratives were thought to be completely original. In the mid-19th century CE, however, European museums, as well as academic and religious institutions, sponsored excavations in Mesopotamia to find physical evidence for historical corroboration of the stories in the Bible. ***These excavations found quite the opposite, however, in that, once cuneiform was translated, it was understood that a number of biblical narratives were Mesopotamian in origin.*** *Famous stories such as the Fall of Man and the Great Flood were originally conceived and written down in Sumer,* translated and modified later in Babylon, and reworked by the Assyrians ***before they were used by the Hebrew scribes for the versions which appear in the Bible.*** ***In revising the Mesopotamian creation story for their own ends, the Hebrew scribes tightened the narrative and the focus but retained the concept of the all-powerful deity who brings order from chaos.*** Marduk, in the Enuma Elish, establishes the recognizable order of the world - *just as God does in the Genesis tale* - and human beings are expected to recognize this great gift and honor the deity through service. The following quote from Stephen L. Harris, Professor Emeritus of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University- Sacramento, completes this point with a devastating argument. *Jesus did not accomplish what Israel’s prophets said the Messiah was commissioned to do:* He did not deliver the covenant people from their Gentile enemies, reassemble those scattered in the Diaspora, restore the Davidic kingdom, or establish universal peace (cf.Isa. 9:6-7; 11:7-12:16, etc.). Instead of freeing Jews from oppressors and thereby fulfilling God’s ancient promises-for land, nationhood, kingship, and blessing- *Jesus died a “shameful” death, defeated by the very political powers the Messiah was prophesied to overcome.* Indeed, the Hebrew prophets did not foresee that Israel’s savior would be executed as a common criminal by Gentiles, *making Jesus’ crucifixion a “stumbling block” to scripturally literate Jews.* (1 Cor.1:23) ------------------------------------------------------------------ The end is near? *The Bible’s New Testament contains a drumbeat of promises that Jesus is ready to return any day now, implying that it will happen so soon that it would be wise to keep it in mind when making any kind of life decision. But it didn’t happen.* The following is a sample of verses professing this theme: Matt 10:23: [Jesus said to his disciples] *‘When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next;* ***for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes’.*** (They fled through the towns but the Son of Man never came) Matt 16:28: [Jesus said to the disciples], *‘Truly, I say to you,* ***there are some standing here*** *who will not taste death* before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom’. Mark 9:1: And he [Jesus] said to them [the disciples], *‘Truly, I say to you,* ***there are some standing here*** *who will not taste death* before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power’. Mark 13:30: *[After detailing events up to end of world, Jesus says]* ‘Truly, I say to you, ***this generation will not pass away*** *before all these things take place’.* Mark 14:62: And Jesus said ***[to the high priest - died 1st cent. AD]*** ‘You will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven’. (The high priest died and never saw the Son of Man) Rom 13:12: The day is *at hand.* 1 Cor 7:29: The appointed time has grown very short; from now on, *let those who have wives live as though they had none.* (Funny thing to say if you didn’t think the end was imminent) 1 Cor 7:31: For the form of this world is *passing away.* Phil 4:5: The Lord is *coming soon.* 1 Thess 4:15: *We who are alive, who are left* until the coming of the Lord. Hebrews 1:2: *In these last days* he has spoken to us by a Son. Hebrews 10:37: For yet a little while, and the coming one shall come and *shall not tarry.* James 5:8: The coming of the Lord is *at hand.* 1 Peter 1:20: He [Christ] was destined before the foundation of the world but was made manifest at the *end of the times.* 1 Peter 4:7: The end of all things is *at hand.* 1 John 2:18: *It is the last hour;* and as you have heard that antichrist is coming. Rev 1:1: The revelation of Jesus Christ (i.e., the end of the world)…to show to his servants what must *soon take place.* Rev 3:11: [Jesus said] ‘I am *coming soon’.* Rev 22:6: And the Lord…has sent his angel to show his servants what must *soon take place.* Rev 22:20: [Jesus said] ‘Surely I am *coming soon’.* *It is puzzling to understand why Christianity survived the failure of this prediction. It is not ambiguous.* This would be like a rich uncle who promises to give you $10,000 ‘very soon.’ Ten years pass and he still hasn’t given anything to you, but he still says he will do it very soon. Would you still believe that it will happen any day? No, you would realize that it is a false promise. *For some reason, Christians cannot comprehend that they have been scammed. @@LM-jz9vh I'm not going to reply to your other comment because you have already given me a comment in the past that is either identical (it honestly looks like you just cut and pasted) or is almost identical. I refuted it and you did not respond. If you are not going to interact with my rebuttals, don't just repeat the same argument. It is a waste of my time. As for this comment, do you have any idea how much biblical scholarship from the days of rationalistic German 19th century has been refuted? The list is extremely long my friend. I could give countless examples, but I will provide just one. Most of the scholarship from that school of thought was adamant that the Gospel of John should be dated to the late 2nd century. And then we found the earliest fragment of John and it has been dated to the early to mid 2nd century. Whoops! The oral tradition that forms the basis for Genesis would have long preceded the EE. False religions that sprouted up after the Tower of Babel would have undoubtedly used and perverted this tradition. The fact that the EE was probably written before Genesis therefore proves nothing. All it proves is that those pagans put their mangled version of the tradition to pen before Moses did. The theory that the EE must precede the pure oral tradition is sheer theory and conjecture. Period.

@@mmss3199 Ehrman has done no such thing. As I've said many times to folks on this channel, Ehrman is simply a pop-Atheist apologist. He is a brilliant and highly capable textual scholar, but when he goes out of that lane, as he so often does, he gets things comically wrong all of the time. Those knowledgeable in the fields (including many liberal scholars) have been well aware of this for a very long time. He is simply a very popular author because he is such a highly recognized textual scholar and because he tells Atheists, Agnostics, Muslims, and LDS folks precisely what they want to hear. I am an expert on historical theology and I can tell you that he routinely gets the most basic things wrong in this field on a regular basis. He touts himself as an expert on the early church and yet he doesn't even understand the basic definition of the doctrine of the Trinity. I highly encourage you to watch "The Bible vs Bart Ehrman." It is on YT. It is a well done video that summarizes what I have just said. And even Ehrman basically admits that the textual tradition behind the NT is extremely strong. In a debate with Dan Wallace he answered a direct question by saying that none of the variants affect any Christian doctrines. He simply constantly says that if God really inspired the Bible, then He would have made sure that all of the copies are perfect as well. But, as James White aptly pointed out in his debate with Ehrman, this is an absurd contention. It would entail giving a 5 year old writing out a Bible verse on his lunch box the same authority that was given to the Apostle Paul. Give me a break. Even further, Ehrman basically admits that the historical case for the resurrection of Christ is extremely strong. He doesn't dispute any of the basic historical facts. He simply says that historians can never posit the reality of a miracle because that is beyond the scope of historians. But, this is also an absurd contention. Most historians throughout world history have believed in the supernatural. And countless ones still do today and believe that they do in fact show up in the historical record. Ehrman is just wrong here. The only way to deny the extremely persuasive historical data in favor of the resurrection is to do so based on hardened philosophical presuppositions. In one debate he said that it is more likely that the disciples saw Jesus' twin than that they saw Jesus Himself. And this coming from a man who has rightly argued that the Jesus-Myth theory is total bunk because James the brother of Jesus would have certainly known if his own brother existed or not. Well, he also certainly would have known if Jesus had an identical twin or not as well! Ehrman's biases lead him to make absurd statements like this in print and in debates all of the time.

3 Things atheist's wish, Jesus never taught. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." "Love your neighbour, as you love yourself." "Love your enemy, and pray for those who persecute you." I only mentioned 3 teachings for the sake of brevity...but there's plenty more. So why do atheist's wish Jesus never taught these moral instructions? Because it is the very best moral instructions the world has ever known... it's unbeatable, making Jesus The GOAT of moral teaching. In other words....The King on The Throne of moral guidance....God. You see, if you able to provide greater guidance...then and only then you have toppled Jesus off that throne. Therefore to attack lesser teachings of His....might be interesting but just won't do. It's like attacking a world record holder about some lesser performance....it only takes the focus off his greatness, but does nothing to affect his greatest accomplishments. Failure to provide greater teachings....will render this short comment, the honour of debunking this 2hour podcast.
