Swatsticas are everywhere here in Asia. You can find it in almost every Buddhist temple in Korea and Japan. They don’t have the same meaning here. They are just a Buddhist symbol. It’s amazing that something I considered so evil in America is considered sacred here in Asia.

Correction: a pentagram is a 5 pointed star... A 5 pointed star inside a circle is a PENTACLE. The circle represents protection and balance between the Elements and The Spirit.

Correct. However, they got the symbol from the catacombs they held the first church meetings in. Each catacomb had symbols designating which section of catacomb was sanctified for what religion(followers of which god/goddess ) . That symbol was very old and in the deepest part of the catacombs. It was the symbol of an old fertility goddess whos name had been forgotten to time.

Well, as it relates to the Judaio-morph religion of Christianity, the fish was originally used as a method of identification between Roman Christians, when it was outlawed originally. One would draw the top half of the fish's body and the bottom half of the tail with one line, and the other would complete it with an identical, though flipped, line transecting it to create the fish symbol.

Also, there was an American military unit that used the swastika as it's unit insignia. Naturally, the unit changed it during WW2.

the Pentacle is in fact not evil by default nor is it meant to be. it represents balance and protection and depending upon whether it's facing upward or down it can be representative of masculinity or femininity, but in both cases it is still called a Pentacle and is not evil. the Pentacle is a Pagan symbol that was adopted by Satanists (who are NOT the same thing). I really wish people would do proper research on this topic and not just Google search it with confirmation bias. (P.S. here are 3holidays that are actually Pagan and were adopted by others: Halloween, Valentine's Day, Christmas) Enjoy!

Alice Willow Not Valentine's Day--Candlemas, which occurs on the same day as Imbolc. (But it's easy to confuse the two holidays, time-wise, especially if one lives in a Protestant-dominant area where masses aren't a thing.) Beltane also was practiced until recent times as May Day but has fallen out of favor along with the agrarian lifestyle, so that would have made a fourth. Personally, I think the pentacle should be a symbol of physics as well as religion, since each of the elements can/does correspond to the different states of matter: earth=solids, air=gases, fire=plasma (star plasma, not blood plasma, of course), water=liquid, spirit=sub-atomic particles and forces.

Funnily enough I wore a pentagram to school and college (as well as the symbol for the triple goddess) obviously at college I wore it under my uniform but at college it was always on show because some extra protection is always helpful (and maybe something to do with the fact I was raised by spiritualists and wiccans)

Yes, they certainly didn't mean it as a body part. This guy is not at all presenting things in context. Peter never was a Pope, there is no proof, it's a Roman Catholic myth. I grew up Catholic. And viewed without any context, they are just lines, or plant or animal parts.

In Greek we have the word Ichthyotrofeio that means fish hatchery (fish farm) and I hope that they don`t raise Jesuses there!!!! lol lol In our religion means fish too but they made this acronym to symbolize Jesus that was born in the years of fishes (if i remember it right from school), as we are now in the years of Aquarius. :)

In the Bible, there are references for the Disciples of Jesus to go make "fishers of men" (meaning, go spread the word about Jesus and His death/resurrection for our sins), as well as accounts of Jesus performing miracles with fish (ex. the feeding of the 5,000). Also, during the time of Saul (whose name later changed to Paul when he converted) when the Christians were being hunted down and persecuted, the way Christians would identify other Christians is by drawing half of the fish in the sand, and the responding person, if they were a follower, would draw the second half. While it is certainly possible that the fish symbol was used in other religions, this is my personal knowledge of the actual origin of the fish symbol in relations to the Bible/Christians.

Fun fact, a popular phrase in early Christianity was "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior." The first letters of each word in Greek spell the word fish. This is where they adopted from. It was originally a bit of secret code when Christians used it since the faith was illegal for a time.

Too late Matt! I wear a pentagram to school. I love the symbol and what it means. And in religion class (which is more like some philosophy and learning a bit of Christianity) I learned my teacher what the symbol really means. And a few years prior to that I asked my religion teacher (who was like; if you want to see something ask) to teach about wicca and old pagan rituals. Its fun to see how many pagan things were adapted in christianity.

Thank you for this. I have learned many of these things on my own. When i was in college a street preacher was preaching about all the "Evil symbols" associated with halloween. Jack o lanterns, black cats, the giving of candy, the costumes etc. I went to the college library researched and wrote a report on the symbols origions and intended meanings, complete with bibliography. He was handing out fliers of his interpretation. i handed him my report. Never saw him preaching it again. people should learn the origions before making judgements based on "rumors".

The "inverted cross" is older than Christianity and is symbolic of chakras. The peace symbol coincidentally resembles a Germanic rune called Algiz. With the prongs up, it represents life or protection, but inverted, it represents death or destruction. Algiz is often seen on German gravestones from WWII to indicate birth and death dates, as opposed to the asterisk and cross. Of all the Algiz-like symbols in pop culture, the peace sign is the only one that uses the inverted one as something positive. The only other examples that come to mind are the Sheikah, Yiga, and XANA symbols.

My girlfriend told me about St.Peter’s cross and the pentagram. Her family are masons so they’re well versed in misunderstood symbolism. I knew the Swastika. It’s also called a manji and was originally a symbol for purity. And the heart is the seed of some sort of plant that was used as an ancient form of birth control, and was farmed to extinction as far as I know.

Really, Amy? Again, for one, silphium does still exist. They are not sure which plant was actually called silphium, just that the one they were using for this purpose is now extinct. And, AGAIN, to illustrate a heart-shaped plant, he used a dicentra, or, bleeding heart.

You mentioned pentagrams, yet you kept showing pentacles. There is a difference.

So after reading the comments I understand that pentacles are the 5 point star enclosed in a circle/connecting the 5 points and the pentagram is a 5 point star that does not have a circle going around that connects the 5 points......ssssoooo that's it????? Actually the inverted pentacle (single point down) means banishing energy so it is used to get rid of bad things while the normal pentacle (single point upward) is for attracting energy and is used to bring in good energies.

Satanist usually use the inverted pentagram with a goat head in the center. The horns are in the 2 points on top. Usually instead of one circle around the 5 pointed star, it's two. Regular pentagram is used as a Christian symbol as well as Wicca and things like that. But who knows nowadays

IDK, it actually makes a whole lot of sense that the pentagram pointing up would represent the four elements that make up the real/physical world and the human spirit pointing to the heavens, aspiring to greater more enlightened things. Therefore, much like a cross turned upside down, an inverted pentagram would mean a mockery of reality (lies) along with the human spirit pointing towards it's more earthly desires. The inverted pentagram still feels like it's right on the nose.

Once you add a goat to the pentagram, it does becomes a satanist symbol tho... I do however wanna point out that satanism (at least LaVeyan satanism) doesn’t have anything to do with worshipping the devil..

The Jesus fish was made as a secret code for knowing if the person you were talking to wouldn't turn you in for believing in God. One person would draw a curved line in the dirt or sand, and if the other believed in God as well, they'd do the same but at opposite points, thus making the Jesus fish

For example, if someone met another person and one drew a fish symbol in the sand and the other person didnt recognize it, that meant that they werent christian and they wouldnt bring it up because they would be persecuted for being a christian. I was told when I was a teenager that the on-point swatsticas represented hate, while the one on the flat was peace & love. I never researched it or really cared much, but just something I heard that always stuck with me & so have never given popular symbols any real value.

Heart = Testicles, I cannot unsee this.

The fish was used to show a Christian worshipping place and they used it so no one would know were they worshiped so they wouldn’t get persecuted.

Unfortunately everything didn’t go too smoothly as it was also a symbol used between Christians during their persecution. The story goes that if you suspected someone you were talking to was a Christian the same as you, then you drew the symbol of the fish on the floor. If the person you were speaking too was indeed a Christian they would punctuate the fish by putting a dot in the place of the fishes eye. However the authorities caught on to this and sent out undercover ‘Christians’ to catch out the authentic ones. One symbol and so many different stories, this is why history is the greatest teacher.

That's what really annoys me the most because when I tell people about my epilepsy/seizures they assume they are grandmals and it's kinda hard to describe the other ones I have because not a lot of people know what a seizure is besides grand mal when there's so many out there and epilepsy is more common than people think!

Interestingly enough, a few years back I got to revisit Egypt and re-explored many Coptic monasteries I visited as a kid. One monastery in particular, at wadi elnatroun, has a place called Bab El-Nebouat, or the Gate of Prophecies, on it you can see the use of many symbols in particular the SAWASTIKA. Yup, the swastika was used in Coptic belief for just over a millenium.

So uhh, I have a story. In third grade we were making Native American drums in art class and we were supposed to use Native American symbols. The paper my teacher gave me had the swastica down as ‘hope’ so I painted it on there not knowing about the nazis

Christianity has always been very pragmatic about festivals and symbolism. Christmas was celebrated in winter because most societies had a festival at midwinter to prepare for the long harsh winter ahead. In spring many cultures had a young king sacrificed to ensure that crops sown then would flourish. Lent was the ending of the period of hunger and lack of food at the end of winter. It was much easier for early Christians to go along with established customs rather than trying to ‘repeal and replace’.

I went to school with the pentagram and told my teacher u will be gone you demon long story short i almost got suspended XD and my friend drew the pentagram all over the pentagram

Interesting no one has mentioned the "Peace Sign". The "Ban the Bomb" sign as it was originally called is also a Runic symbol of death. When inverted it is the symbol of life. Pagan Nordic graves had both with the years of birth and death next to the relative symbol. Still in use today.
