Germans discovered a massive water supply system in Kish island years ago claiming one of the oldest in the world ... They fixed up the site in such a way that you can walk through the channels at various ground levels... The son of the German geologist who was in charge of the site was the one who was actually giving us a tour. He said that his dad fell in love with the place and that they are there ever since. They did an amazing job in excavating and fixing up the site!!! I think they funded the whole project cuz the Islamic Rep of Iran didn’t want to spend money or to deal with it... There were prints of birds with features on the walls and at nodes. Do not leave the island before checking out the site...

Thanks for sharing this video. Many historians consider Achaemenid Empire as the first true empire. Of course, there were many more ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Summer, Akad, Babylonian, and Assyrians but they were mostly city-states with limited territory populated with people from the same race and culture. They usually conquered another territory and installed their own men over the conquered territories and if those cities revolted against their ruler the army would have crushed them, burn their city, kill their men, and taken women and children for slavery. Achamenians on the other hand devised a clever administration system; after conquering another territory, the king or victorious warlord would have visited their temple, paid respect to their deities, restored the defeated king (if he was not killed and was popular) on his throne, and often arrange a marriage between two royal families to strengthen the bond between them. In this way, they would have earned the trust and loyalty of the defeated nation and did not have to rule by fear as Assyrians did. Their robust methods of governance are still in practice around the world without many people knowing about them. They were the first empire that divided their vast territory into provinces (states) they called it Satraps; each ruled by a local king (ruler, governer). This is the reason that the Achaemenid kings call themselves "King of the Kings" that they truly were. Their system was so effective and noble that many nations preferred to be ruled over by Achaemenids and enjoy the security and prestige of living under them than their own kin. For instance, Lydian Greeks put up stiff resistance against Alexander of Macedon (great) when he invaded Iranian territory in Asia minor and for this reason, Alexandar treated them harshly and ordered them to kill many defeated men and sold women and children into slavery because in his eye they betrayed fellow Greeks although Greeks were always fighting amongst themselves and never managed to form a large, strong central government like Persians. They were a union of city-states that occasionally united to fight Persians but often fought each other, especially Athen and Sparta. Greeks hated Persians because: 1- Persians treated women with respect and many women were consulted in important matters of the state. Several royal women acted as regents until boy-king was coming of age. 2- They believed Persian Men were not masculine because they dressed up and put on jewelry ( most definitely they meant aristocracy). 3- They hated that Iranian garments were made out of silk (again nobles). 4- They hated Iranian men because they wore PANTS not SKIRTS! 🙂 The irony of history is that the Westerners who think their civilization is a continuation of Greeks' civilization, in reality, adopted all the habits that Greeks hated about Persians. Alexander the Great was scolded by his warriors and commanders for adopting Iranian custom and attire! So if you comb your hair, wear perfume (deodorant) and put on pants, and respect your mother, sister or wife then you inherited those from Persians, not Greeks even though you don't know it. 🙂

How about pants? Pants and long coats- the trousers that we wear today along coats that was customary until very recently in Europe is a Persian heirloom. None of the nations of the old world except Persians wore trousers and long tunics coming to the knee.

Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of Achaemenids, due to the vastness of their territory, they had several capitals such as Susa, Babylon, Hegmatane, Estakhr, ..., etc. Some of these capitals were captured from their rivals and maintained as a center of power like Hegmatane which was the capital of their cousin Iranians -- Medes -- or Babylon which was the capital of the Babylonian empire. Perspolis was particularly important because it was built on their ancestral homeland and used for important religious and state ceremonies such as the coronation of a new king.

The scene at the beginning of video that you mentioned regarding carpets above water? I'm sure it's a clip from somewhere at Darband in north Tehran. Darbard is a section of Alborz mountain range in north Tehran where mountain hiking enthusiast go to climb the mountain. As one climbs the mountain, there are numerous small and large restaurants as well as small vendors catering for all sorts of refreshments and cuisines. As such it's also a magnet for families, visitors and tourists. There's an all-year-round snow cap at the peak of the mountain that supplies an all year round stream of water down the mountain and ultimately to downtown Tehran, stretching tens of miles, or maybe longer. What restaurants and cafes along the route to the top of the mountain do, is place large wooden platforms, covered with Persian rug and cushions, above the water streams where guests can order meals, refreshments and "Ghelyan" to relax and spend their day/evening. The water stream is ice cold even in the heat of summer, and some people place water melon or bottles of drinks between the rocks in the stream to chill. The place is open 24/7 and is somewhat spectacular. There are plenty of quality film clips of it on youtube; well worth the look Mace. Ps, While I'm at it Mace, Saturday 20th March is the start of Iranian new year called Nowrouz; the most important festive event in Iranian calendar. I was wondering if you're going to treat us to something extra special then?! :-)

Iranians were (perhaps still are) so good at efficient governance that they were an indisputable superpower for 1200 years from 7th BCE to 7th CE except for about 200 years of being under Greek Seleucid after Alexander the great defeated Achaemenid king. Yet even during the Seleucid, the administration and grand viziers (ministers, men of wisdom) were mostly Iranian not Greek. After Iran was conquered by Arabs in 7th CE (AD) for about 80 years Iranians were ruled over by Arabs, then they assisted a rival Arab tribe to take over the Islamic Empire that at that time grew so vast and rich. Iranians then were the intellectual force behind the Abbasid Caliphate in which Iranians occupied most of the high administrative positions and gradually but surely they swept the Arab nobility aside and Iran gained its independence again. To cut long story short, Iran is the only country that has been dominated 3 times by foreigners and returned to its glory and super-power (or major power) status again and again like the mythological phoenix! Greece never regain its major power status after transferring power to Romans, Egypt never regained its glorious past when they were at the apex of their civilization and even lost its lingual identity (Coptic to Arabic) after being conquered by Muslim Arabs but Iranians maintained their culture and even prospered under occupation until at the proper moment they toppled the foreign government and re-established at least part of their past glory. Safavid Empire was not as grandeur as the Achaemenid, Parthian, or Sassanian Empires but was one of the strongest empires of its time and defeated Ottomans several times when they were invincible and no European power managed to defeat them in any war. Iranians even ruled territories out of Iran in service of kings in foreign countries; for instance, most of the grand viziers of the Mugal Empire of India were Iranian nobility. Iranians also ruled the Ilkhanid dynasty after being brutally subdued by the Mongols and turned them from cruel, bloodthirsty killers to patrons of art and Iranian architecture (e.g. Ilkhanid and Timurid Dynasties). Even Ottoman Turks adopted Iranian poetry, architecture, and music since they had not developed culture until then (12-15the CE) The west needs to educate itself about Iranian history then they will know why many pressures that bring other nations on their knees fail to work on them. Iran is not like many of those territories that they colonized by trickery and brute force, they tried many times but Iran at the weakest and most vulnerable time of its history (Qajar Dynasty) could maintain its independence and fend off the British Empire. Of course, Brits used other vicious methods to influence the court and meddle in Iranian affairs, nevertheless, Iran has never been colonized.

Say (dorud) instead of salaam. salaam, it is Arabic From Middle Persian drwd (drōd, “well-being, health, welfare”), from Old Persian *druwatā-, from 𐎯𐎢𐎽𐎢𐎺 (duruva-, “secure, healthy”), from Proto-Iranian *druwáh.
