I emerged from a year and a half of working from home with a 100% given-up wardrobe. I was horrified by the prospect of returning to the office in my old, worn, way too big, sloppy clothes. That's why started searching youtube for style advice and found Marie-Anne! With her help, I figured out my body shape and bought some tailored trousers, dark wash jeans and a few flattering tops. I've been slowly building my wardrobe since. My ultimate goal is to wind up with a wardrobe I love as much as Marie-Anne loves hers!

Comfort can be American stylish and doesn’t have to be compared to what others see as “given up.” Respectfully, it’s rather pretentious to assume every woman who wears a certain aesthetic doesn’t care about how she looks.

  • @ClaudiaArnold

    @ClaudiaArnold

    6 ай бұрын

@@evarene07 I think in many cases the difference is quite evident. For example, there is an older lady in the recorder ensemble I play in and she wears only very loose clothing. However, they are all linens or even handspun wool, and the pieces are put together with some thought. Though she has that superorganic cottagecore style, decides not to tolerate anything binding and shows nothing of her shape - at 75 and with two knee replacement joints I can understand this - she does not look as if she has given up. Then there are people who really do not care or do not like to spend money on clothing - witness somebody with a superexpensive ultrabook on their lap and shoes from the Dollar Tree practically falling off their feet - and that is their business. However, at a job interview or in a position with customer contact or even when entering a shop or a restaurant, a person dressed from the clearance bin of an athletic wear shop *will* be judged, be that unjust or not. Dressing just one notch better than my surroundings - and it is really easy nowadays, when wearing good jeans and a real sweater instead of sweatpants earns you the question "Oh, going somewhere special today?" - has brought me a lot of advantages in my (self-employed) life.

I am glad you used the term "lazy", because this is exactly what it is - being lazy. Here in the US, everything goes which is just euphemism for being lazy and not caring.

please, it is not always laziness … I am old now yet still fight with myself about caring for my appearance against the ingrained belief from birth [from my mother] that it is wrong, in fact a sin to look at oneself in the mirror,, that’s it’s selfish to think about yourself etc etc and even though I now ‘ know ‘ this is not so , doesn’t negate the damage that has been caused.

This is the first time I watched your channel and its exactly what I needed to hear. I'm currently home on maternity leave with my 9 month old boy and pregnant with the second baby. Yesterday I had epiphany and realised that I've given up on myself: no makeup for days, living in my pyjamas and joggers, just frumpy as heck. Today your video randomly popped up in my recommendations. You're godsend and although I'm 40 I agree with your advice. I feel too old for following fashion trends. I'm off to clear out all my tatty clothes and book an appointment with a hairdresser for a start, then shopping for some stylish maternity clothes.

I confess that when I started teleworking (I'm a computer engineer and I always telework) I made some mistakes (leggings, tracksuits, sweatshirts, wide garments, knitwear...), it was faster and very comfortable to be at the computer for many hours. But I realized that it really made me too lazy, we got used to it and we already do it as a rule, we don't look good so we left or abandoned each other in a more general way and we feel bad or depressed. So I took the rule of dressing well every day (or decent as we say in my country) even if it's for teleworking, telestudying, or just going to the bakery. And the truth: I feel much better and I'm prettier in general

I totally agree with every one of your observations. Even when I was overweight, I abhorred looking sloppy and floppy, but had no idea how to look better. Losing the weight and finding you has been a huge boost to my self esteem. The trends of torn clothes, baggy everything, and going out of the house in pajamas have never been my thing, but I was stuck in a rut of flowy tops and jeans. I feel so much better about myself wearing tucked in shirts and sweaters that fit. Belts are my friends now. Thank you,Marie-Anne!

Yes, they should be called “distressing jeans”, not “distressed jeans”. I hate seeing them on people, it just encourages that “I don’t care what I look like” lie that everyone in my community buys into. I notice that women who dress like that spend many hours a day on elaborate makeup, hairstyling and nails, just to wear crappy old gym clothes - they care plenty!🙂

Excellent insight! I moved to another country and started to overhaul my style and overall look. My public wardrobe is almost where I want it, so I've started concentrating on my at-home clothes- yikes! I've started asking myself, "Would I be happy to open the door looking as I do right now?" If the answer is "No", then I think about the elements that give me pause. I feel I have a better understanding of what I need to purchase/maintain to be comfortable at home without looking like I've just woken up from a bad sleep.

Thanks Marie-Anne for your gentle style reminders ! Things in the UK aren’t looking good style wise and so quite a few french brands have closed down their stores ( i was actually mourning when comptoir des cotonnier shut down its last store in London) so I now take advantage of any trip back home to replenish mine and my daughter’s wardrobe with true quality basics. I’ll admit to it, the only time I embrace some degree of frumpiness is to walk my puppy at the park ( old coat, wellies and leggings) because I don’t want to ruin my nicer clothes with mud and I get changed immediately after.

Shapeless dresses we call potatoe bags in Germany, and who wants to appear in public as a potatoe? 😂 The issue with the elastic waistbands on trousers, a thing I won‘t be seen dead in, is also that they are cheaper to produce that is why the industry is so eager to adopt them and tries to sell them to us all. Thank you so much, Marie-Anne for this video, it‘s spot-on!

I just can’t fit any trousers that don’t have some elastic at the back, at least. Trousers are made for a waist 12” smaller than the hips, I’m more like 6-7” smaller because of my very short waist and skinny hips. I have to size up at least two sizes to fasten the waist in non-stretch-waistband trousers, which look ridiculous on me. They give me Dumbo Ears, big empty flaps of fabric sticking out from my hips and the thighs will be double the circumference of what I need. This is why I prefer skirts and dresses, but sometimes I have to wear trousers, which are a nightmare to find.

I have witnessed the slobification of America over the years. I cringe at some of the clothes women wear to go shopping. What happened to us? The overweight women who wear skin tight leggings and short tops? The sloppy tops over sloppy pants with flip flops in the middle of winter? I could go on and on. Just look at those old black and white movies where women dressed up ..even wore hats and gloves. Thank you for your videos and wonderful advice to keep us classy and well dressed.

I am dedicated customer of Torrid. lately I have found that as they have changed their designer, she has a special catagory of work clothes, which I find follows,I you rules, and cause of this I see older women shopping there! For example, this fall there were four different sorts of blazers, a long one, a middle one, a short at the waist one. They came in the colors of the season, matched pants. Discovering my waist has been a joy. Becausse of this new design/buyer at this complany, it has changed everything! She keeps it simple. Thank you thank you.

Yes this is quite true! I find that even ladies who are plus size seem to not understand "fit". I am not talking tightly fitted clothes but comfortable fitted clothes. Since I have been watching and carefully observing your advice, I no longer purchase clothing that do not have a good fit, (even if I love the piece!). If I love the garment: I take a photo of this garment and take it to a tailor! I get a price cost for fitting for me personally! If it is too costly, I wait until the garment is totally on sale. Then I can have it tailored but still within my cost! Sigh! I never thought I would own a moto leather coat! But I purchased one and of course it was too large! So, instead of settling with the larger size, I sent it back for a size smaller! It worked! Now it is may fav coat! It is all cause of your advice and consideration.

You are so right about sneakers. Thanks for calling it out. I thought it was just me. People are wearing them with everything now and when I don’t wear them, I feel “overdressed” compared to others. In Australia, we are so casual in our style that it’s so easy to feel out of place if you’re not in casual clothes and sneakers.

Bonjour Marie-Anne! I saw your video on giving up. I'm one of those people who gave up in the past 3 yrs. My husband was battling cancer in the middle of the pandemic which meant that we went into near total isolation whilst he was receiving cancer treatment. Thankfully, he is a lot better now. Hopefully winning this war. After 3 yrs of isolation I got really depressed & nearly gave up until recently. I was the pajamas, yoga pants, no wearing lipstick, lady. No one would believe I used to be a diva. Recently, i started coming out of my shell. Your video has given me a "shot in the ass" to dress better and hopefully find that elegant diva i once was. Thank you so much!!!

Although I do totally agree Marie Anne I do want to point out something in regards to loose clothing (no disrespect at all). It doesn't always mean we have given up...but when you live in a climate where every day of summer is over 35°c, hot and humid, the last thing you feel like is wearing anything that hugs your body. And open sandal shoes are the same. I do agree it can look frumpy but it's so hard to look chic with sweat rolling off your body and make up peeling off your face. Can you give us hot climate girls some useful tips of how to dress to stay cool AND look chic????

Marrianne. It's me again. One important piece of advice if I had to give any would be a good stylish HAIRCUT. If your cut is frumpy and out dated your clothes can't save you. Your hair cut marrianne is flattering for the shape of your face an has some zing to it giving you a modern edge. I am 80but no one would guess. My hair is well taken care of trimmed an colored every 5 weeks. A good precision cut is essential .

You got me. Marie Anne. I have by no means quit caring what I look like and I have not given up by any means, but my life has gotten smaller since I moved to my mountain. I stay at home much of the time but I do go out to the little town. I try to dress up and look decent when I go to a larger town and when I go to church. I love dressing up for church. Most of the time I do wear big T shirts and knit pants. And God bless Lycra. When I worked, I never went out without my makeup on. But I enjoy letting my face breath. When I worked at a Childrens Day care facility, mothers used to bring their children in, wearing pajama bottoms and bedroom shoes or flip flop shoes. I used to say to myself, Girl, you've given up! Don't give up!

I heartily agree with everything you've said, Marie-Anne. I think Covid made women (and men!) very lazy here in the UK, and it was too easy to spend a work day in casual clothes, pyjamas or jeans. I'm glad I've been fortunate to have stayed at work during this time. I find it helps to plan ahead, too, and I know what I'm going to wear for the week ahead and any special events I may have coming up. This way I can make sure everything is washed and ironed, that I don't go to wear something and find a button is hanging off or something and I can plan what accessories to wear with it. Unfortunately in the UK we've become very American, instead of French, so all the young people want to dress like Kim Kardashian. I live in a city with a big sporting university, so it's very common to see women walking around in leggings, and they look dreadful. Even worse, in the past summer (which was very hot!) there were girls walking around in what looked basically like a bra and leggings, it was appalling! What on earth is going on?!

I concur with you Jane. Here in the UK a lot of people do look like they have given up on themselves. When it’s not athleisure for every single occasion it’s people looking like a pale imitation of a Kardashian and there is not much else in between. This is also reflected in my view on the offer of clothes available on the high street, usually rather poor quality at quite high prices 😢

I’m sorry that you’re dealing with that; I hope things improve for you! I’ve had chronic health issues for 30+ years, serious enough to keep me out of the workforce and semi-homebound much of the time. It can be devastating to one’s self-esteem. Rather than ignoring wardrobe and makeup, though, I’ve taken the opposite approach. When I do feel well enough to go out -even if it’s only to run errands or go to a medical appointment- I treat the day as a mini-vacation from my often difficult and too-restricted everyday life. I plan my outfit days ahead of time, choosing something that makes me feel my best and is fun to wear. I lay everything out the day before, down to ‘preloading’ my makeup brushes, to make it easier to get out the door the next day. A stop at my favorite coffee shop, bookstore, or lunch at my favorite restaurant adds to the mini-vacation experience and I go home tired but mentally refreshed. You deserve to still feel like *you,* despite your health challenges. Hang in there! ❤️

I have become so lazy and haven’t worn makeup since the lockdowns began, just my daily sunscreen. I know that even just blush and lipstick make a big difference on too-pale me. A little under-eye concealer helps a lot, too, I have those bad, genetic dark circles. I’m going to make an effort to resume wearing at least this much everyday (eye makeup is a big problem for me, it’s hard for me to tolerate, so I only wear mascara and shadow/liner for special occasions.
