10 Stupidly Fast Guitarists in Metal

In this video I watch Loudwire's "10 Stupidly Fast Guitarists In Metal." Do you agree with this shred lord list? In my humble opinion, speed is only useful in the service of a song. Speed for the sake of speed is merely athletic performance. If you can play fast while also playing musically, you win big muhahaha. Learn more about how to shred musically with my music theory course below.

I have been taking Paul Gilbert's artist works class for a while now, what is really cool about Paul is that he has tremendous enthusiasm for the guitar, he makes tons of videos for people giving tips and his insights and seems to really love helping people maybe even more so than playing, he is also a grandmaster of the "guitar face". You really make the squeals sound a lot better if you have the right face displayed at the time, a little too late or too early and it loses effect.

Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Greg Howe, Richie Kotzen, Michael Lee Firkins, and of course Jason Becker...just to name a handful of guys that were fantastic players and extremely fast. Paul Gilbert does deserves the top spot (Bruce Bouillet was a hell of a player too). Yngwie was the first guy most of us heard shred at breakneck speed if you were a teen or older in the 80's, so he will always deserve his due. Shout out to Jeff Loomis; first heard Nevermore back in 1999, Dreaming Neon Black. OMG! The Great Kat!! I remember her. I bought her album when I was a teenager and she put her phone number in there. So of course I had to call her. Since she was in New York, I “borrowed” a telemarketing office phone. My long distance phone card was already maxed - this was the early 90’s. Anyway, Kat answered my call, and was pissed that I woke her up- whoops, time zone differences… She sounded like Marge Simpson’s sister, but was ultimately cool and nice to me.

Marty Friedman is able to shred but has the ability to play anything really really well, he isn't even my favorite guitarist but I feel like he is more versatile while no less proficient. He's higher than #10 imo. After thinking about it, Kirk Hammet and Marty are different from their other bandmates in a somewhat comparable way. I'm not saying they're similar sounding however.

Something that goes unstated quite often is that the tone and effects can contribute a lot to the perception of speed. Even what you play makes a difference. Playing lots of wide intervals at 170bpm can sound just as fast as playing scales at 200bpm, like an auditory illusion.

You need to do a video about speed. You read online about alternate picking "speeds" of more than 18 nps or 24 nps!!! which is insane (and as far as I am concerned impossible). I personally believe top of the line shredders are clear and accurate around 13-15 nps AT BEST and that is insanely fast. At 16 nps I think you loose track of what's played and its more blurry rather than note per note playing. What do you think?
