10 strange things that happened at F1 testing

Спорт

Formula 1 pre-season testing is a time of excitement for drivers, teams and fans alike as new cars hit the track.
But it’s also a time when strange things happen. Cars don’t work as anticipated, drivers turn up in unexpected places, crashes bring whole teams to a juddering halt - with myriad difficulties coming out of left-field to cause surprise and amazement.
While once testing was largely conducted out of the public eye, in recent years there has been increased as-it-happens coverage from the likes of The Race. With the eyes of the F1 world locked onto the test venues, it’s become impossible to keep such strange goings on under wraps.

Williams did not “endure a pointless season”, Kubica scored a point for them in Hockenheim. By the way, I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention McLaren being very quick at winter testing at Jerez in 2013, fooling everyone & themselves into thinking they will be the favourites for the title that season only to discover that that this speed was the result of a suspension component being incorrectly fitted on their car, which created an extremely low ride height that in turn led to the fast lap times. They reinstalled the suspension in the right order and it turned out they came up with a midfield car.

because the first round is in Bahrain and they do not want to set up so many TV cameras for 3 days and then flying out next week for Bahrain, the reason they'd broadcast Bahrain is because that's the first race and they don't need to remove the cameras and microphones for the first race at Bahrain. I guess its cost cutting and safer for pandemic

They’ve stated the reason is because of the new regulations it is likely a lot of cars are going to not have good runs/breakdown and that’s not a good look for sponsors/potential sponsors. So they test “offscreen” and fix any reliability issues and then test again when they’ve understood the parts better

In relation to the Alonso crash, ex-FIA F1 Doctor Gary Hartstein said at the time he felt there was more to it than met the eye. One of the official reasons for Nando being kept in hospital, besides the concussion, was for him to recover from the sedatives given to him for the flight to hospital. But Hartstein said that by definition a sedative given on that day wouldn’t require recovery the following day. He said categorically it wasn’t sedatives keeping Nando in hospital. In fact, Nando’s manager at the time, Luis Garcia Abad, posted a photo of Nando in his hospital bed a day and a half after the crash…with Nando still connected to a heart machine. For a concussion? 36 hours after the accident?! Not to mention over two of his three days in hospital were in Intensive Care. Still doesn’t sit right with me that we were given the whole story. Perhaps we’ll find out one day in Nando’s book…

I was in the pits at the Jacarepaguá track in Rio, 1989 for the most tragic of all pre season practice events I can think of; Philippe Streiff becoming tetraplegic from a horrible freak accident where the AGS roll bar collapsed when the car flipped over. It was a series of unfortunate accidents, beginning with an issue with the track, then a suspension failure, and an unlikely roll with the eventual collapse of the roll bar, awful medical response from the local organizers, and, finally a hasty and premature transfer of Streiff to Europe. It was, sadly, the perfect storm that victimized this wonderful guy. I always think of him with a heavy heart.

F1 needs to come test in the states, Florida is perfect in the winter. It's Feb 7 and we have a high of 80°F or about 27°C, sunny and not a cloud in the sky. Drops to about 60°F at night 👍 I like the idea of a race here in Florida but not in Miami, I'd much rather see a purpose built track designed around the performance of today's cars. Let's see some truly technical sections, more off camber and progressively banked corners.

It's likely the Redbull camo livery actually aids other teams in being able to see the shape of the car (I'm not saying Redbull don't know this by the way). It creates more trackable points. If it was just swirls it might be OK, but it has a lot of text and other lines on it. It also is basically a series of stripes over the front wing that creates something like 20 or more trackable points across the top and bottom of each front wing element. I think their design is actually quite good for photogrammetry software. A matt black car might be good way confound photographers.

Yes, that was my thought too. I thought "Hey cool black and white livery but where exactly does it camouflage anything?" just a uni black or really dark purple would've done better. But not matte, metallic would be better. Or just use the same livery as on normal road cars. They actually have an effect!

9:57 an unbelievable steering problem happened in NASCAR in 2002, during the pace laps of the second Talladega race. While warming up the tyres, Mark Martin's steering locked to the left, and his Ford slammed into Jimmie Johnson's Chevrolet, basically ruining Martin's chances of winning the championship. Jimmie Johnson then suffered an engine failure during the race, ending his championship fight as well. Those things, plus Sterling Marlin's injury, basically handed Tony Stewart his first NASCAR Cup Series title.

McLaren being rapid in the 2013 preseason test fooling everyone & themselves into thinking they will be one of the favourites for the title that season only to realise they hadn’t installed the suspension correctly which made them that quick. They reinstalled the suspension in the right order and turns out they had an average midfield car. Unfortunately they couldn’t revert back to the “wrongly installed” suspension setup because it wouldn’t last in that configuration as it wasn’t designed to work in that way

It’s actually the opposite. Sand is highly flammable so when it enters the car and gets in the engine and mixes with fuel it increases the top speed by 15.5%. Almost like a nitro boost. This is why sand is spread on the tracks before every race

Well he eventually did it later and failed, but maybe they would have fared better with the Renault engines in the mid-90s? The biggest "what if" for me is if Prost had taken over the team in 1992 instead of 1997, it would not have ended under Benetton management and so Benetton wouldn't have got the Renault engines for 1995 and later. Maybe we would have had a Benetton-Mugen Honda, imagine that...
