Dr Jawed Qureshi presents shear design of reinforced concrete beams to Eurocode 2. This video is part of the Eurocode 2 Concrete Design lecture series.
Shear design for concrete beams ensures they don't fail under diagonal forces, which try to slice through the beam. Here's how it works:
1. Calculate Shear Force (V): Determine the force acting along the beam, trying to cut it.
2. Concrete's Capacity (Vc): Figure out how much of this force the concrete can handle by itself.
3. Add Stirrups: If the force (V) is more than what the concrete can handle (Vc), we add stirrups-steel bars wrapped around the beam. These stirrups act like safety belts, providing extra strength.
4. Spacing: The number and spacing of stirrups are calculated to make sure they can carry the remaining force.
This process keeps the beam strong and prevents it from cracking under stress.
