Dr Jawed Qureshi presents a worked example doubly reinforced beam design to Eurocode 2. This video is part of the Eurocode 2 Concrete Design lecture series.
Concrete is weak in tension and strong in compression. When a beam is subjected to bending moment, the top side is under compression and bottom under tension. Due to its weakness in tension, concrete beam needs reinforcing steel bars on the tension side (bottom side for simply supported beams). This is termed as singly reinforced concrete beam. But sometimes we need steel bars on compression side as well to resist heavy or when the section size is limited due to architectural or accessibility reasons. This is called doubly reinforced concrete beam with both tension and compression reinforcement. Today, I’ll walk you through a worked example on doubly reinforced beam design to Eurocode 2 in easy steps.
