Selfishly interested in anything to do with high cholesterol (medical), but I'm sure your viewership would like to know things like why you can't build muscle without caloric surplus, evil carbs, latest fads or any number of a million questions you've tackled over the years :D

    You like to be as complete as possible, which we all appreciate given the tendency of many toward unsubstantiated sound bites. Given that, you will always be hard pressed to stay within two minutes. HOWEVER, if you want to keep going with Two Minute Tuesdays I would really take it as a challenge to pare down the content on that subject to just the top facts you can discuss within two minutes. As soon as you say, "At least one study indicates..." it's too late--it's over. Also, since you've provided a lot of great and complete content previously on many of these subjects (nutrition, creatine, etc.) you can always link to your more complete discussions if the viewer wants to know more. I'm going to watch either way.

    Are there any articles on the effects of creatine to those with renal disease, as well as hypertension caused by their renal diseases, that you could refer me to? My specific case: at infancy I had renal reflux, which caused hydronephrosis, surgery repaired my ureters etc. and stopped further damage to kidneys due to early diagnosis and treatment at infancy, now having high functioning kidneys with renal disease, and hypertension caused by kidney damage. I am 21 years old and am a healthy male if disregarding these issues. Appreciate if you could help! If not, no worries. Keep putting out great content!

I look jacked compared to some of the guys lifting the same amount of weight (or more) as me. Edit: That's to say due to more fast twitch fibers, not the creatine making us jacked. lol

    When you talk about dosing, is it recommended to take creatine everyday or only on training days? I don't want it to be ineffective if i'm not getting it to any relevant concentration in the blood by only taking it 3-4x/week or every other day. Also, I read (and you briefly mentioned) a link between glycogen stores and creatine, is it at all beneficial to eat higher glycemic foods on training days in coordination with creatine intake or will this have virtually little/no effect?

    The study about loading shows that you shouldn't split the 20g into 4 doses. From the abstract: "The lower excretion of creatine using 20 x 1 g x day(-1) doses suggests a greater retention in the body and most probably in the muscle."

  • @BarbellMedicine

    @BarbellMedicine

    Doonoooo that’s not based on muscle concentrations and balancing it w side effects. There are multiple sources- including most outcome based studies- showing a split dose w loading is superior. We expect the excretion rate to rise regardless

    Ok so as a fairly thick female (5’6/180ish) who has been powerlifting a little over a year typically training about 4x a week, would you recommend creatine? I’m planning on competing at 165 this year. I’ve always avoided creatine because of water retention and being wary of weight gain. Would performance benefits for females generally outweigh any potential weight gain possibilities?

  • @BarbellMedicine

    @BarbellMedicine

    6 жыл бұрын

    That's a difficult question. I would expect you to gain 0-4.5lbs from creatine. If you have a difficult time losing weight to make 165 then this might be more trouble than it's worth. On the other hand, if you want to maximize your performance, I'd be taking creatine. It's a risk benefit thing I think you'll have to address personally.

    my take on this is that you first reach the desired bodyweight without supplementing creatine, so that you get there sooner and also so that it won't interfere with your bodyweight measurements. Once you get there, supplementing is a good idea, since you will then be in a caloric maintenance, let alone in a surplus, in which you can handle higher relative intensities or volumes in your training and thus maximize the enhancing effects of creatine in your overall performance.

    I took creatine for a couple months but had to recently stop. Within the first week I gained 15 lbs of lean muscle mass and my bench went from 135 to 275. About a month in I was sitting at 225lbs at 6'2" and around 7% body fat. Numerous fitness companies were contacting me a day. By 8 weeks I could no longer move comfortable, as I was so musclebound that I resembled more so an ox than a human.

    OK, if you have two groups with similar baseline strength and programming and one takes creatine, they will become stronger than the controls. But what happens if you take their creatine away? Does the increased strength relative to controls go away? Did creatine supplementation steal their ATP regeneration gains? That is the real question.

  • @BarbellMedicine

    @BarbellMedicine

    6 жыл бұрын

    mark putham they’re still stronger because their training was more robust in its response. Also, wouldn’t you want to give yourself every advantage whilst training?

  • @markputham2960

    @markputham2960

    6 жыл бұрын

    Sure, but I woudn't want to make progress that disappears when I stop taking a supplement. Plus I feel like the concept of "gains" isn't as clear as it could be, with combined effects of muscle synthesis, muscle innervation, higher-level muscle coordination, and ATP regeneration, and probably more I'm not thinking of. But I wonder, for example., does very short HIIT, like 30sec spurts designed to exclusively work the phosphocreatine system, have an effect on strength? Maybe not 1RM but in a training context with multiple reps? Or is muscle synthesis king and taking things to boost the other parts of the lifting process, like creatine and CNS stimulants, purely helpful? Or do I have no understanding of how these things work?

  • @BarbellMedicine

    @BarbellMedicine

    6 жыл бұрын

    There are no supplements whose effect disappears when you stop taking it. That doesn't exist so we shouldn't discuss it like it's a think. Yes, the mechanism of improvement secondary to creatine is multifaceted. To your other question, yes, HIIT training can effect strength positively or negatively depending on context, but not via the mechanisms you've suggested...no.

    take it for 3 months. If you don't have much response, then it's a good enough indicator. BBM guys have mentioned it's 6 weeks to get the stuff out of your system. I thought I was a nonresponder, but my squat has gone backwards since stopping it, while my bench improved due to a technique change and my deadlift isn't maxing out every week so I might have better recovery to offset any loss of deadlift. Give it a go. Creatine is CHEAP. I reckon it's worth an extra rep at 75% of 1RM.

    If my math is correct for a 70 kg lifter he should be taking 31.5 grams of creatine a day. 0.45x70 31.5. please tell me I'm doing my maths wrong haha
