    It's important to remember that this wasn't just "Christianity". In fact, the Catholic Church banned witch hunts at various points as a pagan practice - because it was. People under Catholic ruled societies re-interpreted their old superstitions and practices with Catholic language, so "evil spirits" were replaced by demons or the devil, but these were old folk practices. That's not to absolve Christians, though. Even though it's not doctrinal within Christianity, most witch hunts were done by people calling themselves "Christian" and evolving the practice using Christian lore. But again, officially it was banned and witch hunts were cracked down on as immoral behavior by the Church. And this wasn't some monolith of behavior over the middle ages, it was more like a weird fad in reaction to local circumstances that kept popping up over centuries - including last century (the last witch trial in the US was just after WW1). What cemented Salem in our memory is that it was one of the later ones when few others were doing anything even similar and there were newspapers to report on it far and wide. Each time witch trials cropped up, it was a local affair with its own unique rules and beliefs, and this compilation is more of a "worst excuses for a witch trial" spanning centuries of separate but related witch trials.

    Yeah. A lot of witch trials picked up during times of crisis like major wars as they wanted to blame someone or try to do something to fix or stop the problem. There is also the fun story of the guy who wrote the witch hunter book. From stories I heard He was a weird dude who got upset that he got rejected

    Yes, I mean, this is like if 500 years from now, archaeologists find a video of Alex Jones and say: "Those 21st century people were dumb AF" Obviously, people being people had all sorts of opinions. I think the best evidence for not everyone falling for the witch stuff are the fact that the Spanish Inquisition was called in villages by people reporting witches and heretics and stuff and the Inquisitors had to actually tell them to calm down. Or the fact that the Salem bubble of insanity was burst by... the witch hunter they called. He was the one who was like: WTF are you people doing? Last, but not least: witch trial craze was around the 16th, 17th and part of the 18th century, as in the Early Modern period, not the Middle Ages. To someone living in the 13th century, witch trials would have seemed equally insane as they seem to us. They did believe in witches, but were mostly ok with them, since they were healers. Even the Catholic Church had bigger issues on its mind (heresy).

    I remember hearing about a recent study that showed yawning doesn't actually increase the oxygen in your body, but it does lower the temperature of your brain. You're quickly sucking a bunch of cooler air against the roof of your mouth, which is close to the brain, so it cools it down. I have issues with anxiety and I've noticed a pattern that I start yawning a lot when it's acting up. There have been times when I was feeling really physically off like I might need to go to the hospital, but I figured out it was just the anxiety when I caught myself yawning. Maybe it just tends to happen when I'm over-tired, but it seems like there's a pretty clear connection between yawning the brain functioning properly.

    Bad as it was, when the Malleus Maleficarum was written, at least it gave a reference on what could be seen as a proof of witchcraft and what wasn't. Also, it regulated in which cases the witch was to be tried by a civilian court of law, and in which cases the church was responsible. (Clerical trials often were more lenient than civilian ones).

  • @Nostripe361

    @Nostripe361

    Well the church was actually very suspicious of when people called someone a witch. While not impossible to get in trouble for it you had a decent chance to get found not guilty or the accessor gets in trouble for wasting resources on a false accusation. You were more in trouble if a group of locals were “investigating” you. As they were far more suspicious of you and/or want to use you for a scapegoat to blame all their troubles on. It’s why witch trials were largely used during times of crisis like the 30 years war

    another problem we lefties have, is when you need to sign something and they try to give you a pen. They try to give it to you right hand, you reach for it with the left, they pull it back, then you pull your left back and they try the right again. Have to grab it with the right hand and then switch hands. Do sleep walk and speak in my sleep. wake up with snacks on the side of the bed time to time. The misses caught me throwing the duvet and fold it in two once while screaming "got you". Did then grab the duvet, stood up and walked outside with it naked out in the snow in -25c / -13 F, gave the duvet a good shake around and went back to sleep. What I did dream, was that a spider came down from the roof, so I threw the duvet to catch it.

    I had an uncle who did some pretty impressive stuff in his sleep. Once woke up with all his bedding missing. Found it a couple days later stuffed into the space between the chimney and wall in his closet. Caught him one night with his mattress and all his bedding hanging halfway out the second story window and him working to shove it the rest of the way. His parents had to move him into what was originally the nursery so he'd have to walk past their bed if he tried to leave the house. If he was sleepwalking, Gram would give him some little task ("get my book from the table, please"). Once he'd done that, she'd tell him he could go back to bed now and he'd just go. It was like the task reset his brain and he just thought that was why he'd gotten up in the first place. He finally grew out of it in his teens.

    for the lefties (I'm not): studies actually showed that lefties tend to have slighter higher IQ levels on average than their rightie peers. Researchers think that this might likely be due to the fact that they have to be more adaptive in a world not fitting them, leading to more creativity and increased neuroplasticity. Of course science is not completely sure about that, but since I remebered this I thought I might as well tell you. 😉

    Gonna be honest. I hate the way this video presented things. Like, before you criticize medieval people for their medical practices, consider how willing you'd be to slice up the dead body of someone you knew or test out strange concoctions on other people. Those were necessary steps to learn anything about actual medicine. And that's before considering how much the scientific method goes against normal human cognition, even today when people are taught science.

    Yes, but for your bad sense of humor, not because anyone was ever burned at the stake for believing those things.

    @@hatleyhoward7193No, he really wouldn't. Read up on his inquisition. He was burned for his religious views, not his scientific views. Like most of the famous "martyrs of science" from that period in Europe, his scientific views weren't against the Church, they were against the scientific consensus. There were plenty of contemporaries who shared the same views publicly and were even published BY the Church even against consensus (which is the whole reason we know what their views were centuries later). But the examples where they were censured invariably involve other offenses, either religious or political. Anger your publisher in any century and they'll stop publishing your works.

    we know that there are things that we can't quantify, and anyone with sense understands that whatever we think we know right now through science will quite possibly seem absurdly stupid in 1000 years time so lets just entertain the possibility that these things were correct - do we know how and why birth marks form? we know how the skin and pigment mutates but not 'why' it does so, 'an anomaly in genetic coding', ok but what determines genetic coding? 'DNA'... ok so what is DNA? 'dunno'... we know what parts of the brain are active during sleepwalking but we don't know ANYTHING about dreams, I say this as a psychologist who has researched the topic a great deal, we have NO CLUE what dreams are, why we have them or what if anything they mean, therefore you can't rule out the possibility that sleepwalking/talking is some kind of communion with the devil. It's a logical fallacy that more cats = less mice therefore more cats = less plague too - you could make the argument, but it cannot be tested, what's to say the cats wouldn't have just carried the plague and made it worse or actually apocalyptic? I'm not saying any of the above is true or false, all I'm saying is that as absurd as these things seem to us from the span of about 1930-2024, most of the things that we think now would seem just as absurd to any other human civilisation throughout all of human history. Never forget that you're not as smart as you think you might be.
