I got super excited when Battlefield 1 was announced, probably the most excited I've gotten about a game release in the last 7 or 8 years, until of course I notice the game play trailers showed regular infantry running around with experimental weaponry, prototypes, and borderline imaginary weaponry. When I saw a dude walking around in steel platemail wielding a heavy machinegun like The Heavy from TF2 cosplaying as a medieval knight I gave up all hope.

As a history nerd in the 1980s I was fascinated by the Great War then. A garage sale I went to then had a lot of N.Y. Times Current History magazines from 1915-20 for sale, and I bought a few. The neighborhood had been sporadically developed from 1920 on, and their are still undeveloped lots in it, being sold to Central Valley farmers then, and seaside cottages never being built.

6:36 I actually have one of these. There may have been over 80,000 made, but this rifle is quite rare today being as it saw _very_ hard use during WW1 and few shootable examples survive today. Some of those examples that survived the war were turned into single-shot rifles for use by rear-echelon troops; their gas systems being gutted and reduced to straight pull action.

An interesting weapon is the italian ''villar perosa'' FIAT mod 1915, also called ''pernacchia'' due to it's sound, it's considered the first machine "pistol" in history and a strong contender for the first SMG, it was used kind of like an LMG as a support weapon, it had 2 barrels with 2 magazines of 25 shots each (9x19 glisenti) and a combined rate of fire of 3000 shots/min

Indy! If you are in Poland, I would like to propose you a little trip to town Bolimow nearby Warsaw. Not to many people know this fact, but the first use of gas in battle had the place nearby Bolimow in 15 of January 1915. It was chlorine used against Russian in village Joahimow - Mogily (it means Joahimow - Tombs). Germans as usual, did not take into the consideration the weather in East of Europe, where the winters are frosty. The frost (-21 Celsius degree) made this gas useless. Just, in this temperature chlorine does not evaporate! And what is really special, the metal container which was used to transport this gas on the battle is now used as the fire-brigade bell.

The Great War The game actually features the Vickers machine gun mounted on buildings w/ full water jackets. The standalone emplacements have the traditional mounts with the steel shield on them. QF-1s are also an emplacement. The MG 15 n.A. is a weapon available to the support class, while the MG 08/15 is the weapon given to one of the elite soldier pickups scattered on the map.

'You have to wonder how many lives that decision (keeping red pantalons) cost?!' I would argue: Not that many. The French spend most of the first year making heroical attacks over open ground. Red trousers or not, even in Khakis you will lose badly if you do that.

Sending waves of men to their death in fanciful colors and with flying banners wasn't *just* a french thing in 1914, even though they were really crazy about it. IIRC, a famous french general charged on a horse with a saber during the first days of the war. He survived and helped stop the Germans at the Marne. Russians, Germans and Austrians did it too. The Bavarian army did pride itself for doing the same thing. The main difference between the Germans and French was the lack of heavy artillery on one side.

As a battlefield 1 player, who has watched the Great War series since just a few months after it started, I have to thank you for putting the whole game in perspective for me. The Great War was kinda just touched on in school for me. WWII was a much bigger subject, with the higher death toll and the threat of global domination from the Nazis, the first one was mainly spoken of as a needless waste of human life, I think one of my teachers told me you could blame the cause on the rise of Nationalism and egotistic leaders. But there's so much more depth to it than that.. And you guys have really done your best to explain it wholeheartedly. I just wanna say that I personally deeply appreciate all the knowledge you've passed on.

That is a rly shortened version haha :) love the show and I am watching it from the start. Good luck in the future and good wishes from Slovenia :)

The French Tried for years to get a Semi-Auto rifle, and almost did. It was 7mm, though I forget if it was Long Recoil or D-I (Direct Impingement like a m16 or a AG-42/Hakim) . Concerns over war breaking out before they were done re-equipping led to the failure of the project. It was used in limited numbers, though I can't find English sources for how it did. I forget the name though. Quite a few Semi-Autos popped from time to time, the BAR started as one, but due to weight he (Browning) modified it and it became a light machine gun. The Russians had the Fedorov but from what I can tell it was over complicated and more an Assault rifle then a MG. Still, by the 1920s we had some very good types, if not for peacetime budgets and the market crash we could have seen an adoption before the Garand (1936), though some like the Bang were bound for the scrap heap.

+The Great War Lots of pics available on Google, many of which would be free to use - it's very well known about in the firearms world. It's arguably the world's first assault rifle (though 6.5mm Arisaka is really pushing it as an intermediate cartridge) with a 25 round detachable magazine and semi and full auto capabilities. They also were only made in 6.5mm Arisaka, using stocks captured Japanese ammunition from the earlier Russo-Japanese War, rather than locally produced ammunition. The gun had controllable recoil thanks to the weaker cartridge and foregrip. They were used in small amounts of the Eastern Front of WW1 to my understanding, but gained more fame for their extensive use by Soviet troops in the 1940 Winter War. I can't remember how many were made but I think it was around 8000 of them.
