Dude the fact that it played DVDs was HOT. Standalone DVD players cost upwards of $500 when the PS2 dropped for $299.99. I had the DVD remote control, too. Shit was so cash.

@Ray Robinson my PS2 was all the DVD player I needed until the PS3 dropped, and then that had the Bluray, Sony was smart as hell building that in. I worked at CompUSA when the PS3 hit and it was cheaper than standalone Bluray players just like the PS2 and DVD players. Half the PS3s I sold were to people that had zero intention of ever buying a PS3 game, all they cared about was Bluray. I suspect a lot of early PS2 buyers were similar.

i ran it through my vcr so i could record the DVDs to VHS when i rented them. one time my mom tried to record a show in my room via vcr timer and i forgot it was set up that way. Instead of getting what she intended she got 2 hours of a tank terrorizing liberty city lolololol

Mate we all did! I remember buying it back then. I think it was on for about 2 weeks with all my saves (of a single game lol). That day my mom started cleaning the house and accidentally pulled of the plug... Shit happens... However, ps2 left only good memories in my mind. Sadly my ps2s rottor died about 6 months ago and I can't play any games as the disc doesnt spin :(

As a teen, the only clear and fond memory of my father's PS2 (that still works to this day) is me and my brother just playing Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2, both co-op and War Mode. Such good times...

I'm having more fun with my PS2 than any of my new Gen consoles. The amount of love that went into these games is absolutely amazing.

In hindsight, the PS2 existed in a special era where devs had a pretty good idea of how to make a game be fun and engaging, but while the publishers allowed them to take risks and be as creative as possible. It wasn’t like now where there’s so many different revenue streams. The only way to make money from a game was to sell as many copies as possible. Given the gaming media was far less saturated, It made getting genuine consensus of what a game was actually like easier. So it really mattered to publishers how fun and unique the experience was. Now there’s more revenue streams and so much more money in gaming, the focus is more on making (and funding) less creative, “safe” games to maximise profits. Don’t get me wrong, the best of the best nowadays are the best games ever made, and there’s a bustling “indie” game market for those looking for a more interesting experience. However, there is less “space” in the mainstream than there uses to be. That’s partially down to the number of dev studios being bought out and shut down/going bust. Publishers and devs know this. But instead of investing in new ideas, new ip’s, it’s far easier/safer to remaster an old game and re-release it.

I still think the fat ps2 still looks really cool to this day. Consoles usually look dated because they're usually a product of their time (og Xbox) but honestly imo the ps2 would still fit perfectly in a modern setup as far as looks go.

The PlayStation 2 was the perfect console. It had a plethora of games, DVD playability, and it looked sleek as hell. Although there are many great games I did play, my all-time favorite PS2 game is God of War ll. I was awe-struck when I first played it. Many fond memories. In my opinion, the PS2 was the best console from top to bottom. Games nowadays look amazing but those PS2 games will always hold a place in my gamer-heart.

i was 7 when i got my first PS2 it was the top of technology back in the days first game i played was crazy taxi it came for free with the PS2 then i play PS2 for a long time but whenever i stop playing when i comeback my completion was back to zero coz i didn't hear about a memory card then i bought the memory card and i beat the Shrek game ahhhhhhhh good times

this is going to get alot of attention now.

I think I played the most out of ps2 with tekken, spyro and black the good old days

you forgot to mention how the PS2 was the best selling console in the world in history and still is the best selling console in history mainly for these reasons 1) Gaming was becoming more popular during PS2 era 2) The PS2 is a DVD player 3) The PS2 was the BEST DVD player in its price range it was literally one of the cheapest DVD players and had all the features of other DVD players in its price and also on top of that it could be used for gaming which made it better than most DVD players (The PS3 is a Blu-Ray player and the PS4 Pro can do 4K Blu Ray BUT they had less sales because by the time these consoles released people who are not that in to gaming but enjoyed watching movies and stuff could use services like Netflix but I don't use Netflix as a physical disc or even a downloaded copy of a physical disc (I normally just download movies) have far better picture quality than Netflix video because they nerf the quality "so you don't eat through your data" or whatever BS and they keep hiking the prices)

Y'all realize the ps2 had a lifetime warranty. Send it back they'll fix it. I've done it twice. Second time they sent me a new ps2 still in the box.

Still got my ps2 in 2020, and though I haven’t played on it in a while, my favorite game that I used to play on it was Tomb Raider Anniversary

PS: in fact Brazil officially received PS2 late, but when it came it was already a success, every kid had a PS2 and piracy ruled, I got mine in 2004

David Nieto What the fuck are you even talking about? Expansions already existed back in the PS2 era, just not on PS2. Rather on PC. Did someone complain about it back then? No. Everyone bought it. Sims expansions, World of Warcraft expansions and yeah the tons of expansions for Street Fighter... Like I said, games WERE STILL complete at the early stages of PS3. Take Sonic Unleashed as an example. It had DLC, but even without it, the game felt complete.

Looking through the comments is so great, because everyone is naming their favourite games, and the library for PS2 is so wide, that nearly everyone here has a different favourite! And there's no arguments about it. I've seen favourites here range from WWE games to Shadow of the Colosus. No matter what games you preferred, the PS2 truly had something for everyone.

until 2009 all the ps2 in stores were imported and expensive. Sony announced the ps2 officially in Brazil only in 2009, when the company brought the ps2 AND ps3 to us, with a national production in Manaus. before that, all the sony consoles and games in stores were imported.

yep, much better than PS4 not just in library of games, but also in terms of hardware for 2000 was far better than the PS4 in 2013 A 2000 PC wouldnt run games like Black, God of War 2, MGS 3 But a 2013 PC would run games like RDR 2, God of War PS2 was ahead of PCs when was released, PS4 was behind of PCs when was released

I'll never forget when i told my little brother that its more of the little square things now then it was just a few days ago... And now i know its the number of games you played...

The Warriors. Now that was a game I truly enjoyed on the PS2.

I was today years old when I found about the tower thing.

The GameCube was my favorite console from that generation, simply because I have a lot more fond memories on it with my little brother, but I can easily admit that the PS2 was the BEST console of that generation.
