On a second thought, back then they were brand-new, I guess both have been bought in the beginning of '90s, when the economical and political situation in Russia was particularly grim and everything have been sold uncontrollably...

BAE Hawk is a wicked aircraft, out of the list of jets available in this video it would also be my top pick for price range and quality of engineering that went into its production, otherwise if price was no issue then of course a mig 29 or su 27 would be crazy wild to buy into, but other than those couple exceptions BAE Hawk would be just perfect as a civilian owned jet, high quality engineering went into its design and performance, also made cameo appearance in one of those Pierce Brosnan bond films that came out after Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies i believe? This event took place at a time the pilots were allowed to fly over the public at very low altitude, before the Ramstein airshow accident in 1988. The Red Arrows started their performance by having all nine planes arrive at the same spot from all directions at the same time, at slightly different, but very low altitude, barely a few feet above the ground, over the public.. They were flying so low that you couldn't see or even hear them coming. Breathtaking!!

In my active duty days I was fortunate enough to fly the F-4 out of K2 Airbase in South Korea. Now, I was the dentist at K2, and as you might suspect, the base dentist doesn't normally get to fly an F-4. In my case I traded. The wing commander asked me to extend my one-year, remote assignment to a second year in exchange for a ride. Took me a little over a nanosecond to decide. I traded a year of my life for that flight with my wing commander. I may be the only AF dentist to fly, hands on the stick, mach 1.1. I barely felt the transition to supersonic. I even got to do an Immelmann. The aircraft is SO powerful that the joke was: "What do you do if you lose an engine in the F-4? Answer: Climb and investigate."

Just to set the record straight, all models of the F-4 Phantom (even the USAF versions) have those "Little Foldy Wings". We used them frequently on our RF-4C's in Germany ... we could fit more of them into the maintenance hangar. Great airplane, I miss working on them a LOT.

@@jonnyboing9177 Indeed you are correct, sir. I was a fuel systems tech. I was happily serving at RAF Upper Heyford when in January 1970 I was dragged, kicking and screaming to ZW (well, as much as a tech sergeant is allowed to kick and scream, that is). You would have loved the place in those days. When the Canadians left they locked every door inside and out and threw the keys into several 55-gallon drums. The first order of business for all new arrivals was to sort through piles of keys to find the ones to open the doors of the areas assigned as offices or shops. I believe most of the enlisted barracks and bachelor officers Q's were open and serviceable but family housing units (Three-story stairwell units, God you just had to love them) were not available for about 60 to 90 days. So you were there still flying missions there 10 years later? Thanks for the memories.

Modification that can be done on SU-27 (US Edition) 1. Reverse Engineer and small upgrades of the engine 2. Swap the old system with the new one that's on f18 (trust me) 3. Swap the old PESA radar with the AESA radar for more range detection capability 4. Try to add some US missiles like AIM 120 AAMRAM and AIM 9X Sidewinder as the main weapon 5. Change the paint to gray or black like F15 SE (looks cooler if you ask me) 6. If you can fit the M61A1 Vulcan into the jet, do it, if you can't, no need to push it, as long as you can make the ammo, you're good to go

I built BAE / British Aerospace Hawk for almost 20 years. For a short time the whole production of the aircraft was at Brough in East Yorkshire - raw material would be driven through the front gate and we’d send a jet off down the runway. It was an amazing achievement for a small factory in Yorkshire . Sadly Bae pulled the plug on the manufacturing side of the plant and we all had to find other jobs.

Also fairly maint. free. When a Russian defected to Japan, US Gov. took the Mig to Area 51 thinking they may get a few flights out of it before having to service it and without parts it would be useless. They ended up flying it for years without needing service (parts obviously). Interesting story. This is where they found out how robust and durable the Russian equipment was. Very different mindset in Russia. These planes are stationed way out in the middle of nowhere with few support personell and sit for months on end with little flight time. Nato fleet is way better serviced, but that equipment also needs it more. Our systems are way more fine tuned, but less robust IMO.

Almost scary. I think I’d have to get a trainer for a couple of years before I flew that thing. Totally worth the price. The ad says it’s about a million dollars away from being ready. The A-4 is not a fighter. I flew the F-4 and $2,900,000 might buy this one but you would go broke keeping it in the air. Even on active duty, they were beasts to keep flying and the support equipment is staggering. The J-79 engine while being one of the best was a maintenance nightmare. Every stator blade on it was moveable with the throttle so you can just imagine the linkage that went with it. It also meant no turbo lag or windup like most jets at the time. Instant thrust! A little-known fact but the F-4 could carry more ordinance than a B-17 bomber.

That Company in Rockford, IL, Pride Aircraft, used to be called North American Aircraft, initially had the SU-27’s, back in early 2000’s. The US Military found out about it and banned them initially. They were torn apart and shipped in a packing container back to Russia where they sat for 3 years. Then, the military allowed them when the F-22 was already out and F-35 was about to be released. So, they’re now back in the states with a lot of limitations on airworthiness. I mean A LOT, because the maneuverability of an older plane like this is capable to hang with the new stuff the US has. As for the Harrier I think I remember hearing at Oshkosh during the demo it goes thru 100gal distilled water per 5min while hovering to keep the nozzle cool.
