Beowulf is probably the most interesting lost literature in the history of lost media! Think about it, Beowulf wasn’t the tales original name because it’s been lost to time, and thanks to that unfortunate fire we now have missing segments of the dragon fight!

In drama it has a bit of a rival in the Norse fragment "Story of Corpse-Lodin the Greenlander" (Líka-Lothin) that manage to pack a rain of blood, a pillar of sea-fire and the twist that Lodin routinely collects the "last will" runestaffs of dead men into the narrative.

The worst thing with the Beowulf literature is not just the fact that we dont even know its actual name or even that we dont know the ending. The worst is probably that we may never know either and beyond. The ending could be something grand and beyond our imagination just as easily as it could be mundane and expected. Personally, I dont know which is worse: potentially losing a glorious fight of the ages or the ending be just kinda meh after all this time

Speaking of lost literature, I recently learned that the 1969 Disney Film, The Love Bug was inspired by a 1961 novel called, "Car, Boy, Girl" written by Gordon Buford. However, the book was never released to the public, almost as if Gordon used it specifically to be submitted to Disney. It's highly unlikely that the book will ever surface.

Another example of found/lost media is "The Rum Diary" and "Prince Jellyfish" by Hunter S. Thompson, both novels were Thompson's first works when he got into writing in the 1960s, and the only reason The Rum Diary was released was because Johnny Depp went through Thompson's Papers for scrapped novels and concepts he wrote over the years, finally seeing the light of day in 1998.

It wasn't a pilot for the 1984 series, it either was a one-off thing or a pilot for an earlier series (would have been 1953). There's probably a zero chance that we'll see it due to the fact that the BBC is absolute shit at preservation and it is likely that the broadcast itself was never taped.

Nikolai Gogol always breaks my heart. He wrote a novel named Dead Souls and planned it to be a trilogy. He had the second novel completely written and the third manuscript mostly completed but a religious friend of his convinced him that his creative work was basically against god and would cast him to damnation so Gogol threw his manuscripts into a fire, which he immediately regretted. He died of grief about a week later. What's crazy is that Dead Souls ends mid sentence!! Well never know what he had planned for the next two books and it's so sad

In fact, after Gogol's death, his close friend found drafts and restored some chapters of the second novel. I don't know if these chapters are available in English, but I have Russian version of it in paper. Gogol was inspired by Dante and planned to create a trilogy similar to the Divine Comedy: the heroes had to walk a metaphorical path from hell through purgatory straight to heaven.

holy shit did not expect Evelyn Waugh to show up here lmao. he's one of my favorite writers. One of my favorite works of lost media is the Truman Capote novel he was working on after In Cold Blood but before Answered Prayers. He spent a good five years working on it and telling everyone he was working on it and describing the story in great detail, and then he died and no one found anything. Some people think he was lying to get the publishers off his back, some people think he burned it, but no one's been able to find it. There's also The Master and Margarita, one of the greatest Russian novels ever written, which was almost lost due to the fact that it pretty openly shit on Stalinist Russia and it also had heavy religious themes. It wasn't discovered in the 60s, despite the fact that Mikhail Bulgakov was one of the most popular writers of the Stalinist era.

It was a deleted chapter that all known copies were burned after L. Frank Baum was told that vegetables that grow children to eat was too scary for a children's book.

There are tons of Victorian era penny dreadful stories that have been lost. The original Sweeney Todd serial was lost for a time. They were printed on cheap paper and no one really thought to preserve them back then, much like early silent films.

Have you heard about the two lost Shakespeare plays? The first lost play, "Love's Labour's Won" is the lost sequeal to the romanitc comedy "Love's Labour's Lost". The second play is "Cardenio", which is based on a sub-plot in the Sapnish novel "Don Quixote". There also alot of books mentioned in the Bible that have been lost to time such as "The Book of Jasher", "The Book of Nathan", "The Book of Gad", "The Annals of the Kings of Israel", and "The Annals of the KIngs of Judah". These are not the apocrhayal texts like "First Maccabees" or "Second Maccabees" but books mentioned by biblical chacaters and even quoted as source materals for canonical scripture such as "The Book of Kings" and "The Book of Samuel".

It never saw the light of day, likely due to the financial shitstorm that Big Idea was going through at the time.

I nominate The Titanomachy, the "sister" book of the Theogony, which details the creation and ascend of the Olympians in Greek mythology All that is known of it are references in other books that mention it and seem to imply that it was either an alternate version or an extended version of the Theogony In both cases it depicts parts of the story differently
