    100 lol, it’s unusual to see a difference between high and ultra shadow settings (there’s a slight difference, but not a big enough one). It’s a massive waste of system resources. I still don’t go beyond high and I have a pretty high end gaming laptop. When I’m running around in Warzone I’m not looking at how realistic shadows are lol.

    Motion blur - off on everything including racing game as I need to see the apex and breaking markers. Maybe keep on arcade games like need for speed & forza. Dof - usually off. Cromatic aberration - definitely off. Bloom - depends on game but usually on I have my games dark and the glow contrasts well. Lens flare - un needed and can fill up the screen. Shadows - if you look at real life shadows they are blurry and reach to grab each other when they are close, low & maybe medium are more realistic. Vignette & film grain - off film grain maybe on very subtle low number. V sync - off seems to make game slightly worse and I've never noticed a screen tear in my gameplay until I slowed my gameplay down to 2% for a video. Nvidia PhysX - usually on. Not necessary but it can add Immersion to long haired 3rd person games. But can also be gimmicky as hair can loose control and become unrealistic. Head bobbing - on if done well. Minecraft yes. Skyrim I have a mod for it but very subtle. Don't like a character that floats but is annoying if not done well. Mouse smoothing - I have my mouse app changing dpi & several in game features changing mouse sensitivity don't need anymore.

    Speaking as a photographer I have to say that a LOT of these "photographic"/"cinematic" effects (Chromatic Aberration, Lens Flare, Vignetting, etc) are things we work to REMOVE. They even go so far as to measure CA/Vignetting on lenses and make profiles to remove it automatically in the major photo processing/editing apps. Now purposefully vignetting can be used well in images depending on things, however for the most part you want to remove it at first and add it in later.

    Good choices, and great video. One correction. Turning off V-sync does not sync each frame with your monitor like you said @6:49. What V-Sync does is the opposite. The way computers paint a screen, is they build a frame in what is called a frame buffer from top to bottom in the background, and then swap it with the one you are seeing. this allows you to smoothly see one image to the next. With V-Sync on, this is how it works in games. The problem with this is in the old days, monitors were very slow, so some frames would get skipped. and other frames would end up getting painted on the screen twice. It would cause lag, and choppiness. If you turn it off, it tells the computer "I don't care if you are done with the frame buffer, just send whatever you have to the monitor every time it refreshes. This means you get the latest information possible, so if it's a shooter, and someone is running across the screen, you get the most updated information on where he is, but it also means if the buffer was only half done, that the lower half of the screen is what was from the last frame, and shows what looks like a tear. So, if you are ultra into competitive shooters, then turn it off and live with the screen tearing. If you don't need that incredibly small additional advantage, turn it on, so you don't see any ugliness.

    V-sync isn't always the problem when it comes to laggy/choppy games. Poor/No optimization of code is a huge problem. There have been/are plenty of games that suffer from poor frame rates solely because of the way they were coded.

    That's not really what v-sync was doing, it comes from CRT and they actually had higher standard refresh rates than LCD displays did in their first decades. After the electron beam scanned each line of the picture, it would v-sync back to the top and begin redrawing the screen refreshing the picture. IN THAT vsync time, you could update the frame without tearing. In recent years Variable Refresh Rate has come in and frames can be refreshed when they are ready without tearing as the monitor waits for a new frame, my monitor supports 48-144Hz refresh at 1440p resolution. VRR is using "Adaptive Sync" from the VESA spec .

    After you reduce shadow resolution, perhaps also consider reducing shadow distance. What this does is spread your smaller resolution over a smaller area. This effectively restores the crisp ultra shadow details again by removing shadows in the distance. Interior dungeons in Skyrim for instance can benefit from a very small shadow distance, and outdoors you might not notice a bigger shadow distance giving more grainy shadows, since the ground nearby is often covered in clutter and grass anyway.

    I actually tend to keep head bob and mouse smoothing on depending on the game (and as long as it's not some sort of competitive PvP game). I do think they add to the immersion by keeping your running and looking around from being so robotic and unnatural. Realistically speaking, running at full sprint will not maintain your head at a static position, and when your look around, it's not on some sort of rapid, hyper-accurate swivel.

    Ive always liked head-bob and camera shake (so long as its not completely over-done). Especially in something like a Mech game. In a game like Mechwarrior or such, a "lot" of camera shake and "head-bob" really helps sell the idea that you are in a giant, heavy mech. If there isnt any camera shake or head-bob then IMO it doesnt seem like you are in a giant robot at all.

    As a game dev here are some specific pointers on some of the more useful effects: - Motion Blur simulates what your eyes would see at an infinite framerate, where you would see all of the intermediate positions of the stuff on screen as they move, it is only appropriate if you're already at max framerate. - Bloom handled properly with HDR lighting can be very important to completely manage the on screen colours, along side Tonemapping. - Low res shadows usually make nice looking blurs but the resolution becomes apparent when things move a lot, if the game lets you play with the Filtering quality then you can go high on resolution and filtering and get the nice soft look, but again mind the processing! - PhysX is usually separately managed from the rest of nVidia's Gameworks library, it's heavily integrated in to game mechanics and most games use it for everything from character movement to any interactable object. If you have a quality setting for PhysX, not the rest of Gameworks, that is actually a quality setting, higher is actually better (more CPU intense though). - Smoothing is actually more manageable than Acceleration, with smoothing the speed of the mouse is slightly closer to what your muscle memory is working with. With acceleration things get really broken, your muscle memory can no longer manage the movement properly because the speed of the mouse relative to the onscreen movement is constantly changing. Acceleration is one of the worst things even when generally working on a computer and not gaming.

  • @threemoo

    @threemoo

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@MastaSquidge In real life motion is smooth and infinite, in game there are discreet images and worse still discreet positions for those images limited by the number of pixels. The only way to get your eyes to see the same thing as reality would be to have an infinite framerate at an infinite pixel density. Yes we are reaching higher numbers, but we're limited by more than just the refresh rate and screen res, we also have to deal with the hardware performance. Once you reach the rate at which changes are indistinguishable, which is around 60 to 75 Hz, the motion smoothness will remain constant, but the blur effect will not be what you think it is. Motion blur is incorrect and looks wrong at anything less than those framerates, but once you're above 60 to 75, motion blur is necessary to capture the intermediate motion regardless how high the framerate. Of course it's never actually done correctly and instead the designers tend to over-extend the effect beyond what's physically accurate.

    For people on a budget, turning off V-sync can improve overall framerate, especially on AMD cards. To prevent tearing, try to get the settings high enough so the game runs at just below your monitor's highest refresh rate. Ex. 110fps on a 120hz display. 60hz displays means you need to target 50-55FPS to prevent tearing, which may make more quick action games, like competitive FPSs sub optimal... but for adventure/RPG/story driven games it should be ok.

    Having options for these stuff is still a GOOD THING. Not everything is hardcore gamer mode. I love to use them for taking screenshots and making cinematics. For example mouse smoothing makes it easier to mimic real life camera movements, and so does motion blur.

    Mouse smoothing is also nice in MILSIM type games like Arma, when you have to shoot targets that are REALLLLLLY far away, so you need a very fine control over the mouse, yet, still need to move relatively quickly for CQB, which means you can't just decrease sensitivity.

  • @achtsekundenfurz7876

    Bottom line: HAVING the options is a good thing. Silly defaults (like having the stuff that's hated by 99% of the users as the default) is a sucky move, tho. And that does NOT only apply to games. Hiding file extensions in Windows (they've been doing it in 1998 and never stopped) might be the #1 infection vector worldwide. Yes, a billion $ company doesn't do as much for security as flipping a default nobody wants anyway. And even worse, some games enforce silly options, so the only way to get rid of them is to use a system that doesn't support them (if the game doesn't refuse to run there at all), hack some settings files, or even worse, get a version of the EXE where the option has been hacked out.

    The reason why "motion blur" is so pointless is because your eyes/brain will naturally blur motion for you when needed. In-game, it just degrades your image quality. V-Sync is worth keeping on if you have performance to spare, but it's the first thing to turn off when you don't.

    Your eyes don't naturally blur motion for video/computer images the same way they do when looking at something in real life. The reason is that video is composed of discrete images, and real life is not discrete. Your eyes will have blurring applied to what a computer would present as a single "frame". Video cameras will also have motion blur (although different from what your eye sees naturally) if you check individual frames, which is why adding some motion blur helps add to the immersion. Most games go overboard though and add way too much.

Part way through displaying a frame, the PC-and-game generate a new frame, so the GPU stops rendering one frame part way through, and continues with the newer frame. It results in a big cut (a tear) where the images don't match right through many or all of your frames, expecially noticable during big movement, like when you turn and the whole world spins around. V-Sync ignores newer frames until the current frame is done generating -- usually the image improvement is more meaningful than the ~4 ms input delay. My worst is V-Sync being off by default and Motion Blur being on. With every new game I install, V-Sync is the very first thing I enable and then motion blur disabled if a simple on/off option. But if motion blur has a slider with say a '0' through to '10' setting, then I sometimes set an absolute minimum of 1 or maybe 2, because a very slight and subtle minimum hint of blur can be effective. I like Light Bloom on and for some games film grain works. Weirdly chromatic aberration works for The Division - I played much of the game with the setting being on, then one day I turned the setting off and it no longer looked nor felt right, so back on it went (not for all games though). Also I know many gamers set head-bob off for a competitive edge in multiplayer, but for me personally I like the realistic motion and realism it adds to a game if it is not over exaggerated. Also head-bob makes for a more rewarding and challenging game and not too easy - I would prefer multiplayer games disable ability to turn it off as it doesn't present the game fairly on an even keel. After all when your running around for real, one's head does bob and the body and head does not stay smooth as if your sitting in a wheelie based rigid Daleks body from Dr Who.

Similar to the leaves that fall around you in Ghost Of Tsushima, effects are awesome, but only if their of quality design. I can run my mouth all day, but in the end FRAME-RATES are all ways going to be the MVP.

    High FPS isn't always a necessity, if developers didn't make it necessary (what the hell did I just say). High FPS is required for fast action based games like COD, Doom etc. If it isn't about milliseconds to response then you can continue with lower FPS. I remember I played Morrowind on my crappy PC (with some minor graphics mods) on 20 to 30 fps outside and 60 inside. I never felt annoyed even once. Game was smooth as hell. Most cartoons and animations run at 20 to 30 fps and we don't even notice it because they're made for you to feel every frame of it. Not just scan for any signs of enemy and go on.

    @@kingp1n817 Some animation, like anime, is even less. Even if it's recorded in the traditional 23-24 fps most shows are animated on the 2s and 3s meaning they hold the same image for multiple frames. So while playing at the normal 23/24fps each image is being held for 2-3 frames instead of 1 so what you see is basically 8-12 fps.

Ever since I saw a ton of tearing in a game a couple years ago, I've turned it on and the tearing completely disappeared (I don't have a gsync monitor). If your monitor can't display faster than 60fps, running a game at over 60 will do absolutely nothing.

    The trick to using VSync is to not use the in game one but NVIDIA's VSync, specifically in the Adaptive or Fast settings. This should keep your screen from tearing while also avoiding input lag. Also, VSync is an easy way to lock a game's framerate if they don't have a framerate limiter. Some game physics get really weird when the frames go above 60 FPS.

    @@ADunleavy Ive used it in all my games (except for the rare occasion where it causes some sort of a problem), single and multiplayer and Ive never noticed any additional latency or lag, not even when Ive tried turning it off then back on back-to-back. It may add some tiny amount of input latency, but if so, its such a tiny amount that it would be practically impossible for someone to actually notice the difference. I cant remember exactly the mechanisms by which Enhanced Sync works, but IIRC while the end result from using it is similar to Vsync, the method by which it achieves it doesnt introduce input lag in the same way. Vsync not only locks the framerate to a whole fraction of the monitors refresh rate but it will also throw out and/or hold on to frames and double display them in order to sync them to the monitor, enhanced sync does something different (Ive tried to look up what the mechanism is exactly for this but Ive not been able to find a good in-depth explanation for it) and whatever the mechanism is, the difference in latency is pretty small, running from practically the same as without running any sort of sync to adding around 1ms of additional latency, which is nowhere near what a person would be able to notice. Vsync on the other hand can add up to around .06 seconds of latency (two frames at 30FPS from the PC having to toss out a frame and wait to display the next one), which is definitely enough lag that a person could easily notice. Granted thats if the game is running at a low enough FPS that it has to lock the framerate at 30, but even at 60 two frames of latency would be .03 seconds, which again, is still plenty of latency that someone could notice.

  • @ADunleavy

    @ADunleavy

    @@KA24DERACER Think of it like this, Vsync matches max frame rate to the monitors refresh rate and makes the frame output at the same time as a refresh cycle, that means it can't go above the monitors refresh rate. But when it goes below it, it can cause stutters/massive input delay because its unable perfectly sync it to the refresh cycle to it holds onto frames. Freesync/G-sync (pretty much the same now) work by dynamically changing the monitors refresh rate to match the frame rate so the frame will always display on a refresh cycle which fixes the issues of stutters and input delay caused by V-sync. The tech obviously adds latency because it needs to calculate things to do this but overall its muuuch lower than V-sync.

  • @KA24DERACER

    @KA24DERACER

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ADunleavy You are incorrect. With Freesync the PC/GPU doesnt do anything besides tell the monitor what framerate its running at and when a frame is coming. The monitor then alters its refresh rate to match whatever framerate the game is running at. Theres no "calculations" going on or anything like that. Freesync does not add any latency. Gsync can, because it has a 3 frame buffer built into the monitor, so up to 3 frames of latency could theoretically be added depending on what exactly its doing, but freesync will not. Now Enhanced Sync on the other hand can add a tiny amount of latency. As I said, testing showed about 10ms of additional latency from running Enhanced Sync, but thats nowhere NEAR noticeable compared to the 60ms or more you could get from Vsync.
