Prequels to the thorn of emberlain.
Late to the jump, but I've never heard a book tuber talk about Dead Silence! Loved that book so much!
Empire of the Damned (book 2 after Empire of the Vampire) by Jay Kristoff is coming out in the US March 12th (end of Feb. in UK).
Adrian Tchaikovsky is a great author to get into because he writes so many great books! I've read most of them, and I'd highly recommend The Final Architecture trilogy, Elder Race, Dogs of War, And Put Away Childish Things, One Day All This Will Be Yours and Guns of the Dawn.
My favorite Asimov short story is "The Joker" it's about a man telling jokes to the all knowing machine to find out where they come from. "Hex" (means witch in dutch) by Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a book I would recommend takes place in modern times about a haunting of a witch killed centuries ago that if found out by people outside of the town the townfolk would all die. I'll be reading "Slaughterhouse Five" by Vonnegut I'll be reading a beautiful numbered edition of it by Suntup Press.
I loved Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel, I’m so excited for their next book Goddess of the River!
Im actually super excited about this coming year for books. Ive been intrigued by a bunch of upcoming authors/books.
The audiobook of Dead Silence is on my TBR list. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Ghost Station.

I had issues getting into the audiobook so my suggestion is that if you find yourself not enjoying it, give it a go as a physical book if you can! I enjoyed it a whole lot more that way
They all sound so amazing! I think I'll try to get to The Tainted Cup, Projections and/or To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods. Thanks for getting me new books to look out for, Hope you're having a good day!
As much as I love this video I think I love your sweater even more 😂😂. I read children of time this year and would like to read some more of taichkovsky’s books
I love mysteries, Sherlock Holmes, and Piranesi so I just preordered The Tainted Cup! Added a few others to my list. I loved Kaikeyi so I am excited for Goddess of the River.
your tastes and mine differ more often than not, but we share on TBR read and that is the tainted Cup! I am intrigued as well, though i am not sure i'll get around to it this year (i'm a slow reader) and planning isn't exactly my thing. Enjoy your second half of the year, can't wait to see your videos talking about these books!
Ohhh didn’t know P Djeli Clark was putting out a new one. Must preorder
I'm really looking forward to 'Service Model - Adrian Tchaikovsky'! I have added it into my TBR!👍
Ooooh thanks for putting that new Tchaikovsky book on my radar, he’s one of my favs!
I’m really intrigued by Fathomfolk too! And you might want to check out The Silverblood Promise which comes out in May. Gorgeous cover and I’ve been seeing comps to both Abercrombie and Lynch.
I don't know if the synopses of Projections is my thing, but the cover looks really cool... I might have to check it out :)
Perfect- was about to look into 2024 releases and schedule a few on my TBR Now just hope you mention some good books

here's hoping 😂
The tainted cup a hit or miss!!? I am 100% hooked on it already after hearing the story premise. And that cover dayum. Also have you chekced out 12 Kings of Sharakhai?
I love hearing about upcoming books- even though I have too many backlist books to get to as it is lol
Love your channel, Merphy!👏 Where did you get your shelves? Ikea shelves tend to sag over time, so something more sturdy would be amazing.
Thank you for all the info, The tainted cup goes to my TBR🥰.
The cover of Projections is so cool!! 👀
Hey Merphy are we still getting a review of something wicked this way come? You mentioned in a vlog and i got excited since it's one of my favourite books!
Amari Book 3 comes out in June (according to Amazon), so I'm excited for that one!
You have several Asimov's stories with a similar premise to some degree, since he has the three Laws of Robotics in place, and throughout several different and independent stories (even some stories from his Empire and Foundation sagas, not only the Robots saga), many robots manage to come up with the Zeroth Law that supersedes the other three, allowing them to hurt individual humans to protect the abstraction that is humanity as a whole. That's also the premise of Terminator and The Matrix, btw
@charlesmartin7536

Pretty sure in Asimov's writings, there was one robot that implemented the Zeroth Law. collaboration between two, but one could not believe in it, so went inert in violating a law.
@AnyMEmdq

@@charlesmartin7536 That sounds like R. Daneel Olivaw and R Giskard Reventlov in "Robots and Empire". Daneel came up with the Zeroth Law, and Giskard was unable to operate within it, as it lacked the power of abstraction needed to consider "humanity" as a whole. By the end of the story Daneel cannot act on the Zeroth Law he had sort of bore, and Giskard, who's a telepath, can finally grasp what "humanity" might mean, acts on the Zeroth Law, and his actions kickstart what becomes "Pebble in the Sky", the birth of the Empire, where the Foundation is created, officially linking all three series. But the same Zeroth Law is developed by other robots in parallel to Daneel's version, as described by Susan Calvin in "I, Robot", for example.
@charlesmartin7536

@@AnyMEmdq was trying to keep it spoiler free..... Giskard and Daneel ended up coming up with it. Giskard leading the way. but when Giskard violated first law, he reprogrammed daneel with his extra ability, then went inert. because he didn't believe in the Zeroth law.
Added Service Model to my list... if John Scalzi is comparing it to Redshirts I want in (and read Redshirts if you haven't!)
Ooo the tainted cup sounds interesting!
i read the tainted cup and i loved it! i hope you do enjoy it too but it is mostly a murder mystery
I really want to start reading Red Rising next month and all the books in the series.
Ghost Station is officially added to my TBR 👻🚀
I don't know the proper etiquette for doing this. But I'm Tagging you in my What have you done? video.
I’m looking forward to The Warm Hands of Ghosts in 2024! Not sure what you’d think about it, but it’s pretty different from Katherine Arden’s other work! it sounds very well researched but also magic/WW1
I'm looking forward to the next book in the William Warwick series!
Here’s hoping the next Morrigan Crow book comes out! There’s a serious lack of Jupiter and giant cats in my life.
I met Adrian Tchaikovsky at a train station in London. I felt bad because he was clearly in the middle of writing a novel and I probably interrupted him, but he was really nice about it. Something in me needed to tell him how great CoT, Cage of Souls and Dogs of War are 😂
Pixel Paradox by T. Penyor Reed comes out in a couple days. It's a bit of a different twist on fantasy, but it has potential.
I’m excited for book three of the Gael Song series by Shauna Lawless.
After Stormlight 5, the book I am most looking forward to is the second book of Mark Lawrence's Library trilogy.
Have you already read/or do you have plans to read Murtagh? I just started it and I’m digging it so far.
Adrian Tchaikovsky's Shadows Of The Apt series is good if you have time to read it. There are 10 books in it but worth a look.
Because of your love of Jane Austen, you need to read Guns of the Dawn by Tchaikovsky
@merphynapierreviews
7 ай бұрын
that one is high on my list for him!
I'm excited for The Mars House by Natasha Pulley! She usually writes historical fiction with a magic realism twist, often centering around morally ambiguous queer characters (my favorite is The Kingdoms) but TMH is her sci fi debut.
I love those bookshelves. Where did you find them?
Trials of the Empire - Richard Swan Feb 6 2024. Maybe my most anticipated for 2024.
Murderbot is GREAT
You should really read all of the Shadow of the Apt saga books from Adrian Tchaichovsky as this is purely a fantasy which he started with and I loved it
To be honest, all of those sound good! I’ll definitely be picking up a few of them. Maybe next year will finally be the year I give Tchaikovsky a go. 2023 was my year of Scalzi (in addition to it naturally being the year of Sanderson)
@chanda782

I highly recommend him! He got me back into sci fi and is my fave sci fi author atm.

i met him at a con ! he’s so funny and really really nice. def recommend reading one of his books :)
For Service Model, it said Murderbot meets Redshirts. Is it referring to Star Trek or the novel Redshirts?
On a somewhat unrelated note. Jimmy is going to recommend David Mitchell's books to you fairly soon. Surprise him by beating him to the punch, and reading something from him. I'd recommend Cloud Atlas for you as a starting point, or the Bone Clocks, but you'd want to follow that one with Slade House, as it's sort of a coda for Bone Clocks. Anyway, surprise him!
Looking forward to Scorpio by Marko Kloos. The latest book in his Frontlines universe.
To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods looks dope
Merphy since you like Gothic, maybe you should try reading "The Lord of Mysteries". I think you would really like it.
Oh ! So Goddess of the River is a retelling of the Mahabharata. Nice !
I haven’t actually read it (really want to though), but based on the buzzwords/selling points, I feel like Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky would be right up your alley!
I do like me some assassins and you just gave me two next year.
I hope 2024 is going to be a good reading years for me. This year I read only 1 book lol. I want to read so many more
You should read Jim Butcher's epic fantasy six book series Codex Alera in 2024. It's basically Pokemon meets the Roman Legion and Jim wrote it on a dare. I believe Brandon Sanderson has talked about this a few times on his KZread Channel. It follows a young man growing up without the aid of magic in a world where pretty much everyone else has it, so it makes him a bit of pariah and a weakling. But he's cunning and he learns how to survive and fight stronger opponents without it. I've very cool and I think you would enjoy it.
I see the advantage of reading new releases. But if there were less random new authors with their expensive new books, maybe I could afford to read what you’re reading. I read Peter Pan from your recommendation, and I can pick that up at the used bookstore for cheap. So my humble suggestion would be for you to please read more old books. They don’t have to be classics, just something I can find with a little dust on it.

@@wazzedon good suggestion. I’ve watched a lot of those videos and read many of those older books. Of the ones that I haven’t read and am interested in I look for those at the used bookstores. But used bookstores don’t have everything. It would help to add some old books to the search. But of course, it is only a humble suggestion from a poor boy with a few dollars to spend.

Do you have access to a library? Even libraries in small towns can often give you access to a lot more new releases than one would think. They might not have physical copies, but usually offer many audiobooks and e-books online. So it`s worth checking out if you haven`t already :)

I'm looking forward to getting Lyorn, by Brust, and the paperback of Starter Villain, by Scalzi.

Brust is the best!
If it releases, I'm looking forward to the third and final book in Phillip Pullman's Book of Dust trilogy.
yeah if you like Adrian tchaikovsky then Guns of the dawn would be perfect for you. It's Jane Austen style characters in a fantasy warlike setup.
There are a lot of great books to read in 2024
Wait, House of Open Wounds comes out in less than 48 hours, on 7 December 2023... Mine has already shipped from Amazon UK. 😅 Did the US release get delayed? I'm quite looking forward to The Tainted Cup, even if murder mysteries usually aren't my thing either. Robert Jackson Bennett's previous trilogies, Divine Cities and Founders, are both criminally underrated and deserve a lot more attention, they're excellent.
Merphy! You have permission to DNF any book, you know that *gives you the stare*
What book is she saying as a comp title for the first one?
I just got like 4 recs
Children of Anguish and Anarchy should be good too!
Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse finishes her great trilogy.
Have you read the City of Stairs trilogy by Robert Jackson Bennett? Its so good i think you would like it

Just looked it up and it looks really good! Adding it to my TBR
Most of those sounds good...
You can read pretty much anything by Robert Jackson Bennett - he is a fantastic author. Highly recommend The Divine Cities trilogy.
You’re only adding one extra sound to Tchaikovsky. It’s pronounced just like the tea chai. So “ch-eye” and then the kovsky part you have right :)
not gonna lie it is a title buy, though I do know Django Wexler and I enjoyed Ashes of the Sun, but I am really looking forward to 'How to become the dark Lord and die trying'
12:50 I hope you read this,
What about Gothikana by RuNix?
STORMLIGHT 5!!!!!
Ian Esslemont's Forge of the High Mage: A Novel of the Malazan Empire is coming out in April 2024. It is the 4th and final book in the Path to Ascendancy Series which is very good.

I'm so glad I grabbed it from book depository for 20bucks when it first released, I'm so annoyed with delayed releases. the dudes from Canada we can get past color/colour
Korey, nerd ;) 13:37
TBR? DNF? IDN if it’s necessary to AEF thing. Let’s just say things IRL. Lol
Projections just sounds like men in 2024
Are you trying to troll people raised on the received pronunciation with that phi? How do you get fee??????? Also, you took that book off your shelf on purpose to irritate perfectionists. I know it! I like the cover of 'House of Open Wounds', I'll have to look into the previous works ot see if I can read those before March rolls around.
Shouldn't the name be pronounced Tchaykovsky, instead of Tchayakovsky?
New releases of 2024: Not 'The Winds of Winter' and not 'The Doors of Stone'. -_-
Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read. Isaiah 34:16
Sorry but none of those books sounds interesting to me.
I would highly recommend -Just Stab Me Now by Jill Bearup coming out February 5th 2024 The author also has a youtube shorts series that sparked the process of her writing this book. A satirical, meta book about historical/fantasy romance tropes "A desperate mother. A dubious escort. And a deranged author who won’t leave them alone. Caroline Lindley is determined that her new romance novel will be her best one yet. Fantasy! Formal gowns! Fencing! And, of course, a twentysomething heroine to star in an enemies-to-lovers plot with all of Caroline’s favourite tropes. But Lady Rosamund Hawkhurst is a thirty-six-year-old widow with two children, her sole focus is facilitating a peace treaty between her adopted nation and her homeland, and she flatly refuses to take the correct approach to there being Only One Bed. What’s an author to do? Based on her popular Fantasy Heroine KZread Shorts series, Jill Bearup’s debut novel brings us the best of worlds both meta and medieval-inspired. Terry Pratchett aficionados will enjoy the political intrigue paired with convivial, tongue-in-cheek satire. And then there's the slow-burn, fade-to-black romance too . . . If you loved Stranger Than Fiction and The Princess Bride, you will soon find yourself cheering on enemies-to-BFFs Rosamund and Caroline as together they learn what it means to be the hero of your own story."
