Hi Andy. I was at the Heard Museum Art Fest and Market this weekend. I met a couple of artist I referred to you. One artist makes silver jewelry from ancient designs on shards he finds near and around the Laguna Pueblo. He returns the shard once his artwork is complete. I told him about your pottery and native designs. The other artist does Mimbres pottery, and she's from Silver City, NM. She was very interested in your classes. It was a great fair, but had limited pottery. Love your content. What you're doing is a gift and hardly cultural appropriation. I'm glad you clarified that for viewers.

Thank you. Some people are just lacking perspective. I had a Laguna Pueblo potter on the livestream today and was talking on the phone with a Hopi potter about firing techniques just a couple days ago.
Correction beeplant grows like crazy in northern NM at least in grants where i live(cibola)🤟
Blood would have the same properties as egg yolk. So it can be used as a binder for mineral paint. But it’s just easier to use an egg. Doesn’t run away ya know
Someone commented on watercolor paints. A lot of watercolor paints are made with ochre pigments, and already have gum arabic as a binder. Gum arabic is the resin of acacia, a tree closely related to mesquite. So Andy, the paint you make is probably very similar in composition to commercial art paints, maybe just less finely ground. Mix the watercolor paint from the tube with some clay to fix it and it's probably just as good as anything. And a word on hematites: I looked for only a bright red color for a long time before I realized it can be different colors. The stuff in my area is actually a dark burgundy/ purple, but streaks/powderizes to a beautiful bright red. (Facepalm...)
You're so amazing!!!!! I love watching your videos and learning about pottery from you.

The black in heavy duty batteries is pure manganese dioxide. You can wash the zinc chloride electrolyte out with water. Add water, mix and decant
Andy, I recently saw in a KZread documentary on the Hopi Indians where they made use of tansy-mustard (Descurainia pinnata), by boiling it down, to produce a black dye for their pottery.

It’s not a dye, it’s an organic binder. But yes I have used tansy mustard in the past.

Hi from Thailand!!! Great to see ya! Will have to get ready for your Fall workshops when I'm back in the US. Thanks for putting those together for the potters community.

Awesome! Thank you!
organic paint is excellent! i wonder if u could set a thick toy with it.
Just a thought, you talked about no website for colored clay. Have you ever thought about maybe getting together with other potters and setting one up? If you had some one who knows more about apps or google maps perhaps you and your friends and others could start marking good places for different colors of clay and/or minerals for pottery.

I am actually a web developer, I know something about setting up websites, but I also know how much work it is to maintain and update such a thing. Therefore I will leave it to others to accomplish.

@@AncientPottery It happens to us all. There is a reason I keep a copy of the K.I.S.S. principle on my fridge.
Andy, I think I know why your salt is working in your natural paints. The salt could be reacting with the silicate in your clay pots to create a slot glaze. Could this be the case? Maybe add silica to your clay in your paints to increase the glazing effects?

Sounds possible, I don't know much about that stuff.
Hi Andy I'm watch your live feed from Australia.. I normally live in Minnesota. I'm hoping to get back into making some more pots. Love watching all you videos..

@@AncientPottery Good Sir, I forgot to mention in regard to your wet processing technique; if you leave the clay in the bucket after screening as you did with a 300 Mesh filter you can leave the clay in the water and bucket until needed, than when needed simply scrap it from the bottom with your hands it’s will dry very quickly compared to attempting to evaporate all the water, in fact if your goal is to eliminate the water, boiling is faster however it is not necessary and the water can be recycled for further processing creating better quality clay from further recycled uses! Forgot to share this, thank you once again for everything you’ve shared Brother!
Thank you Mr. Ward. Physics of clay and the dynamic minerals involved during firing are so very interesting! Off topic maybe. But are related to Burt Ward? Lol

No relation to Burt Ward.
Can glazes that you use make it safe to use your pottery for food?
👍
Could poke berry / poke weed be used? It's red used in ink and dyes

Most dyes will not work for pottery because they will burn away in the fire.
Poisonous fumes and vapors can easily enter your body through your eyes. That was always emphasized at my old workplace. Safety glasses protect you from dust particles not fumes.
@AncientPottery

What are you talking about? This video is about paint ingredients, where would fumes come from? These minerals don’t let off fumes when they are ground and mixed into paint.
@lisah336

I thought the process was to apply the paint to clay then fire it. When firing, I would be concerned with fumes.
