$10 MTB Upgrade that took my bike from ENTRY LEVEL to the NEXT LEVEL

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In the world of Shimano derailleurs there exists the basic line, which consists of old favorites like the Tourney, Acura and Altus. Then there's the Entry Level derailleurs starting with the Alivio. My eMTB came equipped with an Alivio derailleur and every ride that's anything above smooth has resulted in a chain drop...and since it's a high torque mid-drive, that often means having to wedge the chain out of a bind between crankset parts. I decided to see if a simple chain guide addition could eliminate the problem....IT WORKS! Even when my choice of chain guides is one that doesn't even fit the bike properly!

You could probably modify an old front derailleur to act as a chain guide on a 1x system. A bit of bending and perhaps an additional screw somewhere else and you can probably get it to do that job. There seems to have been lots of different designs of chain guides over the years and they all seem to work. It only has to stop the chain lifting from the teeth and falling to the side.

The N-Gear Jump Stop has saved me a world of headaches over the years. I've had a couple of bikes that I swear were allergic to their own chains that the Jump Stop fixed.

I had the same issue with my bafang mid drive. Even with a clutched derailleur and a narrow wide chainring. What finally got me to figure it out was the same, 5 minutes of trying to yank the chain out from the inside against the motor haha. Designed and 3d printed a nice guide and haven't had a single issue since!

I just upgraded the rear derailleur on my 2013 Mongoose Switchback Expert mountain bike with that same Alivio rear derailleur. Alivio RD-M3100 SGS. The bike came with an Altus M310 medium cage derailleur and it didn't work right with the Sunrace CSM680 11-40T 8 speed wide range cassette I upgraded to from the original Sunrace CSM66 11-32T 8 speed cassette that came with the bike. I also did a cockpit upgrade back around 2020 to a Truvativ Hussfelt 40MM stem and Truvativ Hussfelt Comp riser bars and swapped the plastic flat pedals for aluminum flat pedals with removable studs. Last thing I did was put new CST Rock Hawk 26x2.25 tires on it last year. It doesn't look like a 2013 anymore. I got the bike new off of Amazon back around 2016-17.

Nothing wrong with an Alivio. On my eMTB it has two factors causing problems for it: 1) it’s getting battered by a bike 25lbs heavier than a standard bike 2) Everything is happening at faster speeds (20mph, even up hill)

i've had absolutely no luck with chain guides. I bought one that strapped to the chainstay with zip ties, but when i shifted to a lower gear the tension of the chain ended up snapping both zip ties from the chain guide. I then bought a chain guide like you showed (MUQZI Branded) in this video and the guide part screwed into the seat tube clamp, well the bolt connecting the guide to the clamp ended up making its way loose and the chain guide fell off somewhere along my ride and I never found it.

My friend said drivetrains don’t matter as much on an ebike. This shows a better drivetrain is still desirable.

A good portion of the cheap walmart bikes with a 1x have the front sprocket completely covered by a plastic chain guide/guard. I see that and I wonder why those aren't put to use like this.

@@KevCentral It did fix the problem for me. Even with a cheap IXF crankset (the original stamped chainring was welded to the crank so had to replace everything) I have no more chaindrops and could finally remove the chainguide. I also use an Alivio btw.

Seth did a video on using a narrow wide, it made a huge difference. He turned off the clutch on a derailleur and did not drop a chain when riding real rough terrain using a narrow wide chainring.
