In cinders case, her thought process isn’t all too far off from realistic. In sexual assault trauma cases, in extremes, the victim either avoids anything sexual altogether, or can’t get enough of the act itself. It makes even more sense when you think of the death, she’s killing them with the very thing they use as a weapon. It’s kind of like.. forcing a cocaine dealer to snort 6 lines of it until he has a heart attack. Only in this case, “Cinder” has a trauma aspect and reason to do it. Doesn’t mean it’s right though, obviously

I saw it kind of like "reverse psychology". If you keep saying "don't do it" to a person who's so out of it, their first instinct will actually be "do it" just to contradict what you're saying, so instead just let THEM make the choice. The silence and their hesitation may slowly get them to realize that this is NOT what they really want to do. One HELLUVA risky gamble, though! I'm surprised to see Superman going for that.

It's not so much the concept as it is the execution esp. when Superman prattles on about how life is neither fair nor unfair. Also contrast that with the similar scene from All-Star Superman, like What Culture mentioned, where Superman stops a jumper by telling her she is indeed loved and valued instead of spouting inane bullshit.

No. No. Screw your inclusion of number 2 in this list. It is one of the most heartwarming comics I've ever read and you've presented it with no context. The jumper TELLS Superman that she doesn't want him to take her down off the building, because its her right to do what she wants. Supes thinks about it for a beat panel, then agrees. She doesn't jump and instead sits and cries, telling Supes all the things that have happened to get her where she is. Supes, somewhat clumsily, says that he's sorry but sometimes life sucks. The jumper, almost amused at how badly he handled the conversation, becomes emotionally tired and sits down, asking for time. He does everything in his power to make her comfortable, including zapping the spotlights that were giving her a headache and waiting literal hours of doing nothing, allowing her time to think and calm down. After several hours, the jumper says she doesn't know what to do. Supes offers this advice: one of his closest friends just killed themselves because they were chronically ill, in pain and never thought they'd have a good day left for the rest of their lives. He didn't condone them checking out, as he says, but he understood it. If the jumper feels the same, then he won't stop her because he understands how she's feeling, but if she wants down safely then he'll carry her down. She chooses to take his hand and let herself be carried down. As someone who suffers depression and finds myself repeatedly in a spot where everything in my life seems like an obstacle I'm unable to come close to beating, I've felt like that before too and I think about what Supes said a lot. There's almost always another happy day in the future, and I've got to hang on for that. Anyone who wants to can read the full thing here: imgur.com/gallery/Ijdxh .

Arisia was "13" by the reckoning of time on her own planet, and still an adolescent among her people, but further retcons stated that years on her planet and in the lifetimes of her people were the equivalent of more than a dozen Earth / human years -- in other words, she was actually "old enough" to be Hal's great-great-(and a few more "greats")-grandmother! Thought that mitigating bit of info should be thrown in. However: That isn't how the Hal-Arisia relationship was originally written, and the "fix" that I described above doesn't make it any less creepy.

@@jimmykavanagh1927 _NOT_ out of character for the Wonder Woman of the period. Wonder Woman was not designed as a Women's Lib character; she was designed as the embodiment of the ideal that a woman would only find personal fulfillment when she admitted to herself that, however professionally driven she was, deep inside, what she wanted _personally_ was to be tied up and spanked by a man (or otherwise dominated by a man, but the tying up thing explains why women were tied up and spanked in almost every issue of Wonder Woman).

Further, it was desperation to avoid having a sausage party that brought her in at all. The JSA was originally organized around characters who didn't carry their own titles. Batman and Superman had their own eponymous series almost from the start, in addition to starring in Detective and action respectively. Wonder Woman didn't yet have a series under her name until after JSA had started, so the rationale for most of the characters applied to her too. Technically, the original Red Tornado was also in the JSA and another woman but you wouldn't know if you weren't paying attention.

Englehart is responsible for #1 as well as the Hal / Arisia thing. About Hal and Arisia -- and also Deathstroke and Terra -- there is a tic you'll see with aging hippies, where they don't have the same sensitivity to age disparities that we do today. The Sexual Revolution was 100% correct in centering consent as the defining premise behind allowable relationships, but there were a few consent issues that they didn't quite work out. Age disparities are one; power dynamics that aren't strictly coercive are another. Anyway, the Hal / Arisia thing screams of, "... if we age her, that should eliminate the objections, right?" No, no it doesn't, you creepy hippie! And quit asking if my daughter is 18.

@Conrad Kujur I should mention that Geoff Johns retconned it that a year on Arisia's world is much longer than on earth, so even when she met Hal, she was significantly older. So that makes ARISIA the creep. I don't know how things are on Arisia's world, but here on earth we've worked out the formula "half your age plus seven".

Super late but to also explain Cinders case as a SA victim, from another victims perspective: Hypersexuality and using sex appeal to get your way is an EXTREMELY common reaction or trauma response that victims get, myself included on the topic of hypersexuality (idc about sharing this cuz i do public speaking a lot). In Cinders case, being a meta human can help her get rid of sex offenders, who she sees her uncle in other sex offenders because they have that sick trait in common. Calling it a "cheap gimmick" is- distasteful in my opinion. Molestation can mess a person up, which is why she kills them with what she knows. When you're a victim of SA at any age, it changes your perspective on what punishments they should get. Of course DC comics is completely fictional, but any kind of pedophile or sexual predator deserves a horrendous fate.

Yeah, never liked when writers pulled this into story lines unnecessarily. It really does just ruin characters. It's not like these sorts of things should never be put into comics, but they must be handled with extreme care and cautiousness. Deathstroke is a good example of this. I know that he's not a good person by any means, but turning him into a pedo and a sexual freak just ruins his image and doesn't suit him, in my opinion (btw, I'm very surprised that him and Terra weren't mentioned in the video). Deathstroke and Terra stuff was done well in Teen Titans The Judas Contract animated movie. There, while it may seem like that something is happening between them at first, it gets pretty obvious later that Deathstroke only uses and, infact, takes advantage of the girl's feelings and "crush" on him, without actually engaging in any form of relationship with her. While it's still screwed up, it's the very right amount of screwed up. It's in character for Deathstroke to do something like this in order to achieve his goals, and doesn't turn him into a creep without reason.

I like the idea of having a BAT romance. If Bruce Timm has always shipped them, then why in the blue didn't he at least put a little bit of effort into creating a good love story between them. Sadly no writer nowadays wants to experiment with both of them together because they are afraid of what might happen if they mess the story. Number 9. Superman not specifically telling her 'Don't Jump' is actually a suggested method when talking to someone who is suicidal. Under no circumstances should you give instructions to someone who is on the brink of ending their life. Instead, be calm. Talk to them like they're actually a person and slowly bring them around in a relaxed and caring manner. People reach that state because they think the world and their life is awful. Having orders given to them constantly may well be a major factor in that, so giving them the order 'Don't Jump' may actually be all it takes to drive them to it. Instead introduce yourself, lead a conversation off somewhere else entirely. Let them know there are people who care, regardless of if they know them or are a stranger. Try to find common ground, like a TV show or something and use that to inspire some happiness in them. Superman watching over her quietly, making sure she knew that someone cared and would stay with her, without trying to make decisions for her or give her commands was what convinced that girl to step back from the ledge and choose life. That same approach has worked in real life countless times. If you're going to comment on something as serious as suicide, regardless of if it's in a KZread video about comics, please take the time to do the slightest bit of research about the subject.

here's the thing about Slade Wilson, he's the Darth Vader of comics. every once and a while a villain comes along that is so badazz that they want to keep using them and make them into heroes (or anti-heroes) so they can let them win. that was Slade Wilson's problem. when this happens, they need to remind the viewer that this is still the BAD GUY. so they make him do terrible things to show their moral compass is messed up. LE characters or "honorable" villains often have this problem. so they have to do something heinous to reestablish their villain cred. Namor, Doom, Ra's Al Ghul, Vigilante, the list goes on.

#2 I’d say Superman was more/less saying i’ll respect your decision even against his own morals if life is really that bad for her. *She made the choice on her own by facing the reality of death itself & rejecting that reality, showcases that her life still has meaning.* As Viktor Frankl would put it.. “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person's life at a given moment. Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked. Each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible.” -Viktor Frankl It might be out of Character for Superman to let someone willingly die & he has the ability to save them, i’m not all that familiar with the lore myself but my opinion still stands. Blaze my comment section as i know some of you will.

What's really messed up is 13 is the age of consent in Japan. In the States we see 13 as a kid. But in many other countries it's sadly not like that.

Don't go feeling too superior. Child marriage is still legal in almost every state in the US. Almost all of which are young girls given to adult men. All that is required is parental approval.

Not to nitpick, but I understand the Green Lantern one. And it's done in more media than you'd think, at least when it comes to aliens. Just for two examples off the top of my head, in the Mass Effect Trilogy, Liara is 77 years older than Shepard when they first meet (she's 106 and Shepard is 29) and that's not seen as unusual. If anything, it'd be weird on Shepard's end because Liara mentions more than once she's "barely an adult". And in Star Wars, Twi'leks reach adulthood between 13-16, middle age at around 40 and anything north of 60 is considered really old. Fantasy relationships like those are only "icky" by our real life human way of looking at things. PS - Elves and Dwarves in things like LOTR are other good examples :)
