An AH-64 Apache named HellRaiser from 10th Mountsin CAB , saved me and 13 of my brothers lives with US Army1st Battalion 32nd Infantry returning from a meeting with local tribal leaders we experienced the worst day of my life. For those who think we don’t need flying tanks today, I’ll tell you why we do. A well planned postponed & calculated slaughter box ambush on November 11th, 2008 apprxomatey 80 mks outside of Kandahar , Afghanistan. Not a soul in sight when I was watching the hillside for movement I heard an explosion so close lit felt like I got kicked in the chest as I looked forward squinting seeing the lead truck 4 feet in the air like it bunnyhopped in slow motion as we ran into the back of it. my hearing was gone to a ring, ,the rear axle blown off the truck as we ran ontop of it and into the lead truck that was as the rear right door opened and marlin fell out onto the ground and the truck burst in flalmes ‘ I was in shock I think when Hearing started comming back to hearing rounds hitting our truck driver and passenger side And I knew we were in seriouse trouble , Only vehicles for cover, they had us pinned down inside vehicles, perfect kill box when Sgt radioed IED convoy ambush heard by Gods Grace there was a gunship that was returning from a convoy escort our side of Kandahar &heard our Sgts chaotic call, requesting immidiate air support , at least 2 KIA , 3 severely wounded ,heavily outnumbered , taking massive enemy fire from our 9 p clock and accurate sniper fire from an elevated 3 o clock, perfect kill box, RPG fire , worse case scenario. I could feel warm water comming out my ears (blood) while seeing stars when I snapped out of it and checked vehicle and we cracked doors to start firing our M4’s . But there was nowhere to go. Fire was accurate , we were super fucked when I heard the faint sweet sound a distant echo of the Apache gunship echoing off the next valley mountains. Firing my M4 out my cracked door I heard the thickest southern drawl come over the radio saying “Gunship HellRaiser 6 2 resp...static” see your convoy, are you in the LAVs & where’s most accurate fire common from? “ Never been so relieved in my life for anything up to that point, I couldn’t see him but he crest the ridge and the echo instantly entered our valley &got so much louder & almost instantly JUST THE PRESENCE caused enemy fire from the brush grove to cease. they run or hide when the A10 or Apaches approach oftentimes. A lot of these guys have seen or heard about night attacks or CAS from Apaches and Hercules and they don’t understand how they are seen at night in the dark cover of trees hiding holding still and wiped out from an unknown massive firepower source & it terries them. Fortunately the only grove of thick brush anywhere to hide an ambushing force was 150’ off our 9 o’clock. Danger close and the 20MM started raining hell on that grove, my first time seeing big trees just get jacked to shit . He stayed on the dead button for what seemed like 2 minutes . Still couldn’t see him but he was somewhere over us and at our 6 then it got louder and louder while still firing the 20 and the unmistakable rocket fire that must have hit a couple RPG rockets because the second one blew much louder and shot sprays of sparks out of the brush. He as he swooped over our heads pitching flares as he elevated arcing to our 2 o clock , i leaned forward in awe at the absolute bad assness of seeing what I did and ducked my head a little to look up and out of my window to see it right as a sniper round hit my door at the hinge where it apparently I had the door cracked entered the vehicle ricocheting up through the dash hitting the inside of the front windshield before hitting the ceiling and ricochetting again to drivers neck but had lost enough velocity but entering , I said fuck me and slammed my door closed and turned to see Williamson holding his neck with blood comming thru his fingers and he coughed blood into the windshield , he yells he’s been shot I grabbed an Army T shirt that’s been left on the floor and told him to put pressure on his neck and I called frantically taking accurate sniper fire from west at out 3 o clock , Williamson shot in the throat . I told Edwards behind him to get pressure on his neck while I opened my door again about 18” started just firing up into the mountainside in multiple directions when over the radio maxfield behind us said translator was hit in the face (in the cheek round went trough his righ cheek destroying his mouth teeth and tongue extiting the left jaw said he was choking , (on teeth , tongue and jaw pieces with blood, Max was freakin out and we could all hear continued rounds being fired at his vehicle , I kept firing jsut trying to get him to stop as I could hear the Apache getting closer circle back when I heard the pilot just hearing the panic of two wounded in throat and face says with southern drawl “MOTHER FU&CKERS SHOOT AT ME!!!” And started raining 20MM shattering the rocks and boulders splintering and 2 rockets as he passed over us and said he’d got 2 asking how many there were. With too any wounded and several KIAs with severely wounded sgt called for emergency evac where we weren’t going anywhere until we got the lead vehicle off the road . No idea if there were more snipers or any in the bush still it felt so helpless when the Apache passed over us flying almost sideways and ran the 20MM again as he moved into view he literally completely leveled every tree in the thick, there was nothing left but a fire smoke and dust he fired a single rocket and so smoothly rotated to the hillside and opened fire again just pounding the hell out of the rock cropping , fired 2 more rockets which rained rock fragments down on our vehicles and then he said he’d over watch so we could get out and start tending to everyone. I remember so clearly putting runnin round to driver side and tending to his neck and lookin up hearing the thunderous sound of the Apache hooveringn 30 feet over the lead unit dead still pointing at the rock crop and that moment of like a big big brother takin care of some bullies I had a moment with the Apache Hellicopter , HellRaiser specifically which had a painted pin head from the HellRaiser movie on the side . Anyone that’s needed close air support and he an A10 , Apache or a herc save your ass knows what I mean but I’ve had a special relationship and love for the Apache and A10 from CAS moments and until you’ve experienced seeing one at close range sending a plot of land and all souls on it to hell ya can’t understand the pure hell they raise, how unbelievably intimidating they are and the calming feeing u have when one gets close. The pilots of all 3 are amazing too, special bond with ground forces and what happened next I’d never seen or heard of before. Medical evac black hawks were 39 minutes out according to HellRaiser , there were too many wounded and we still hadn’t got to the blown LATV that was in flames still but the helo gunner said it was fully engulfed and the 2 thst got out were being tended to. Sgt. Eccles radioed another frantic call for medical assistance and as I tossed some smoke between us and the grove jsut in case the Apache started lowering from 30!feet onto this narrow elevated road actually landing in front of the lead vehicle leaving it staging about a minute later around the lead truck comes the pilot and gunner with their m4’s , their flight helmets and shoulder bag, . The gunner came to my side and said he was an EMT and combat medic prior flying , an AH 64 Apache anhialated the entire enemy force , then lands on the sketchiest landing sight I’d seen and both pilot and gunner assist our convoy , pilot was watching for additional enemy lookin thru his scope over the mauntain side on the hood, while the gunner started working on the Afghan. Still in touch with that crew today.. they did get awarded V medals for what they did. The blackhawks entered the valley with another AH64 escort thst HellRaiser requested you take up overwatch . We got the wounded and KIA to the birds and they dusted off leaving our unit down 8. Was a heavy contact valley so we had to get out , cleaned out the hit truck of anything and I was told to push it off the road over the hillside because they wouldn’t put a wrecker crew in the valley to retrieve it. Healey (pilot) told me and my Sgt. They’d provide convoy support back to base and I’ll nene be forget thst. I was on the verge of some mental freak out as the Adrenalin began to wear off and if he hadn’t told me that and literally flew directly over us almost the entire drive back I’d probably of had a melt down . He slapped both my shoulders and said “your good brotha, your good , let’s get outta here, I’ll fly support and roll back with y’all,..you’re all good.” Most vivid experience I had, remember every detail. HellRaiser saved 14 lives that hot July afternoon & for thst will always be my savior , my MMA big brother that fucked up a gang of cheap shottin pussy bullies on the playground. HellRaiser sent the entire force to Hell. The Meanest death machine I’ve ever seen.

We paid good money to italians for the support but it worth it. We can produce T-129 as our wish wilhout any ''permission'' And with the experience we gain, ATAK 2 is on his way. yea but then again, this video only touches on 1% of the features that actually differentiate each helicopter. It would be like comparing cars by mentioning their number of seats, whether or not they have a speedometer, and if you can get it in multiple color variants. In reality, the big differences are in the electronics, how the helicopters handle in various weather conditions, how advanced their optic aids are, their defense measures, engine types and efficiency/loudness/etc, any radar scrambling surface treatment, etc. Price is also heavily influenced by when and where the helicopter was developed.

  • @RB28v

The prices will also vary due to volume. The reason the Rooivalk, for example, is so expensive, is because they only made 12. If they landed a contract to build 50 or 100 the price per unit would drop dramatically.

The avionics equipment, defence capabilities/ delivery systems, self protection devices and body armour, all contribute to the cost (bottom line). You also need to consider the research, development and testing costs. If you are developing a new product from scratch at low sales output, the cost of production escalates. This is a typical scenario of the Rooivalk helicopter that we developed in South Africa. But i will tell you this. The Rooivalk is one hell of a helicopter. A real dream machine that is reliable, efficient, agile, maneuverable, and a killer of a machine. It also has a highly sophisticated and locally developed helmet that has additional intelligence capabilities. You simply observe the target, lock on it and fire.

Am sure the few crews lost in AH64's would have appreciated some alternative solution do going down with the aircraft or just the ability to stay airborne without a tail rotor. AH64 is a great helo .... but just sayin ... its far from perfect.

@Keegan Devlin I never suggested all Russian helos have high crew survivability, or that AH64 cannot take hits, try reading peoples points more carefully and responding to exactly what they claim .... But there is no argument that the KA50 and KA52 are significantly more crew survivable than the helos we are using in NATO, the ejector seat and KA's ability to remain airborne with significant amount of the rear fuselage blow away is pretty clear for anyone with a balanced perspective. Lots of people need to grow past the immature need to fallaciously assume that everything homegrown must have inherent superiority to foreign made equipment. Its childish, ignorant and dangerous to underestimate ones potential opponents. (not suggesting this is your perspective just talking in general)
