10 Most Effective Martial Arts in Real Fights

Fighting in the street is illegal, whether you are using martial arts skills to take part in a mutually agreed bout or retaliating to an attack. The Law applies to everyone, with fighting posing a lot of danger to everyone involved, which can end in fatalities. With that being said, life isn't always black and white, and sometimes, running away or avoiding aggression is impossible.

Now the reality is I've had somewhere around 50 street fights. but none and I mean none of those guys were mma fighters. Most of them are just thugs who think they can fight cuz they are big. My hardest fights have always been with smaller guys. I don't start fights and I'm a pretty easy going guy. My opinion is most people who start fights are not good fighters and feel they have something to prove.

In the street, you need to perceive dangerous situations way in advance to avoid them, you need to stay focused, calm, and avoid confrontation at any cost, don't look weak and afraid but also having a solid and balanced posture and body language without being on guard accepting the fight. You need to have situational awareness 360° and to maintain a safe distance but also close enough to act instantly if required. The best fight in the street is the one you avoid, you don't know if there is a hidden weapon of many more attackers. If you go to the floor you are done, no matter how good you are, you could be beaten to dead by a mob. In the past, I had some situations like the ones I described, when I grew up in south america, and those comments are based on my personal experience.

I agree that training Lethwei enables one to manipulate a real street fight. It allows the headbutt tactic which is very important when being in a real fight. Some may think that using headbutt can probably be applied automatically without training, or it is just from one's own instinct when fighting to survive. In fact, when we are trained for doing something , we get used to doing it ; and then it becomes our self-instinctual behavior which automatically applies in the real situation. Without training hard on killing method, a good Muay Thai fighter will be considerably disadvantageous when fighting a well-trained killer. Athletic instinct is derived from the training with rules and the athlete even being trained for the octagon cage can be killed easily in a real street fight, despite that the opponent does not have a weapon but is a well-trained one on dirty tactics.

I've had both experiences and i gotta say I'm alot more scared of the dude that was raised figthing in the hood that the guys that been training for multiple years but never experienced a figth or fligth situations. Bruce Lee quoted "I do not fear the man who kns a 100 kicks, I fear the man that has thrown 100 kicks" and he also quoted" a man who has trained boxing and wrestling for an yr, can beat a man who has trained martial arts all his life" we all kn what he meant is that someone can train to punch really hard, someone can train how to kick, jump or throw jumping kicks fast and everything, but a man who kns those probably won't beat a man who may not now to throw the strongest kick or hav the best balance and flexibility as long he has fought so many times before he probably won't throw the most beautiful kick ever but from trial and error and constant repetitive fighting he will hav the knowledge and timing and conditions to kick u where it hurts powerful or not, he will kn how to play u dance with u, wither his fighting is sloppy but u can't land a hit or can't defend against his punches even after ur training he is going to look more beautiful than i, but from apart of that since boxing and wrestling are the most simple and most aggressive fighting that hones every instinct and fitness and if ur a gifted natural born fighter thrown punches is probably all u ever gonna need, that's y n my gym I keep looking for ppl to spar instead of attending my instructor's class n be 1,2 1,2 I wanna develop my footwork from my errors and I want to kn how to defend and hav movement and I want to get used to punching and getting punched like ur suppose to, I do attend my jiu-jitsu class but I do it cuz in the end we do spar and we do to try the techniques my teacher teaches us wither it works or not n seeing techniques he teaches us I can already see the science and see every angle jiu-jitsu is suppose to do, and I can see how my opponent reacts and figure their patterns and how fainting and presuring them cause them to open or how counter their offense, and because on how I piece the science in the techniques my teachers shows other takedowns, locks, and escapes especially from a submission hav been coming to me instinctively, but I do hope I get better enough so i could include strikes on my jiu-jitsu and fighting up against a wall. But I do dream on learning boxing since boxers literally hav the strongest punches, I wanna do muay thai since muay thai weaponizes every part of ur body and even let's u grab and pull ur opponents into ur strikes, and I wanna learn since of course in a street fight almost every fight will end up in the ground so jiu-jitsu is good but I wanna able to strike on the ground. So point is I wanna be technical is It can get and just remember punch but don't get punch, which is y I don't wanna learn Kung fu, nor karate, nor tko since those just train to for flexibility, high kicks and spins a high kick is gonna leave u off balance and u could fall easily, a Spin kick is gonna leave ur back away n those r hard to land, just throw simple kicks to just hit and pull ur leg back or connect with another strike.

So many great comments here. I'm thankful for my brutal and harsh "training" growing up which did nothing except give me a lack of self esteem and the fastest hands I know. This, coupled with thousands of self choreographed fight scenes I did between the ages of 13-16, and some real situations, has enabled me to defend myself with stunning success. Ultra fitness also played a major role, as well as practicing one punch 100,000 times. We all have our training and combat journey and hopefully most of us will never see life threatening situations because we saw them well in advance and responded accordingly.

You can also be creative with martial arts like Boxing, adding some leg grabbing techniques to it whenever your opponent kicks you, or kick-dodging when your opponent tries to kick the weak part of your leg or when they tryna sweep ur leg. I did that and it took 4 months to master, I have only gotten in a fight once and those creative techniques are honestly worthy for self defence. All I had to do is hold my bully's leg and throw a right hook at his jaw and a kick on his croch

I think the same. When I'm training alone at home with my heavybag, I add some elbow strikes. I tried Muay Thai last year. It's amazing. But man, I hate throwing kicks and knees. I know it'd come in handy in a street fight, but personally I could't stand doing it. So I came back to boxing and add some elbow just in case someone try to pick a fight with me. Boxing is incredible. The footwork is great (Muay Thai just lacks it), head movement is awesome and such. The problem is how fragile are the hands, especially compared to the skull. That's why now I train with a long guard and instead of focusing in power I bet in speed and precision. Even a punch with 50% of power can knock a punk out if hit the right spot. I'll try to learn how to grab the oponents leg too, thanks for the tip.

Don't take the fight to the ground, just lay out your opponent on the ground.

In terms of practical training, I would say judo or boxing. This can be said about many sports, but if you add too many prohibited things for training, the opponent will not do what is prohibited, so abnormal "stances for sports rules" will increase. (Even the ones I listed above can turn around or crouch if you use the rules abnormally.) I listed these two because they allow specialized training in "hitting well" and "throwing down opponents." On the street, you don't know how many opponents there are, and you don't know if they have weapons, so you can't take more than three seconds with one opponent, so many "real self-defense techniques" have patterns built for that purpose. Kung fu and aikido, original form karate which are ridiculed because you can't see the actual fight, are training combinations solely for that purpose, so if you can use them, you win, if you can't, you lose. It's not a show. And I don't know what means by "effective" here, but the least dangerous thing is to "walk away quietly." There's an old Chinese proverb that goes, "A master swimmer will drown, and a master of martial arts will be beaten to death."

MMA does not allow lethal techniques (like eye attacks) and no one is on the street with gloves and there is concrete and glass and uneven ground not a soft flat matt with no weapons. A trained fighter or a street savvy fighter can use almost anything as a weapon. It can be effective but in a street fight the object is not to knock someone out or gain points. It is survival. Kill or be killed.

Bjj may be very strong one on one, but what to do when it's more than one? I would always recommend learning stand-up fighting in addition to BJJ and also learning stand-up fighting as a BJJ.

In a street fight...the best technique is to be in as good of shape as possible and to be as strong as you can be. The next technique is to know how to grapple -- that means -- knowing how to get out of headlocks efficiently and knowing how to get out of various holds and grabs -- if you are strong and in shape -- it makes it a lot easier to get out of holds and grabs. If you look stong and look like your in shape, its makes it 90% less likely that someone is going to try to start a fight with you. And if you are strong and are in shape, it makes it 8 percent likely that the person is going to back down when they realize how much of a hassle it is to have to fight you. The last 2% you are dealing with someone who is mentally ill, and probably possessed by a demon -- and you have to start praying and you have to be able to outlast them. They'll eventually wear down. Being able to fight is instinctive -- some people have it and some people don't. And some people have the natural aggression to be willing to hurt other people and feel good about it or be comfortable with it -- and some people -- really most people don't. I've found that fighting is more spiritual than physical. It is about who can control their energy better. Evil people who like to fight, they try to absorb your energy and use it against you. So if you get very fearful or very angry, they absorb that energy and it powers them up. If you stay as calm as possible, they can't absorb your energy, and you are able to absorb their negative karma and push it back against them if they are in the wrong.

Grappling in a street fight?? You are assuming the person does not have a weapon and you have placed them in striking distance of nerves, major arteries, veins, tendons etc if they have a cutting weapon. There are filipino martial arts where a small 2 inch blade can kill you.

Karate's weakness is they are not good in inside fighting, when fighting against a karate fighter all you have to do is wait for them to attack then countering them is easy. Because they put everything into every punch or kick, I call it over committing , it is hard for them to spar, so once you are inside they have no defense

Personally i think we can forget bjj in self defense situations, cause it focuses in grapling techniques vs grapling techniques while laying down. It’s quite hard to pull up an arm bar while getting knucles on your face. My personal top 5 would be taekwondo, sambo, boxing, wrestling and mma. Mma takes the lead cause it’s widely spread and mma-gyms are known to be laid back learning environments where everyone is constanly developing new techniques to overthrow opponents. My mma coach once taught to us that some day we will face opponents that are superior to our skills in every way possible, but whom we can take down if we have faster musclememory. So my answer is to find straitforward martial art and star grinding few selected techniques.

I think boxing can be quite effective in the street fight. but some things in boxing that you would use in the ring very effectively are not good idea in a street fight. I think Muay thai or Lethwei are more complete fighting systems. Still some muay thai fighters don't really know how to throw rear cross very well. But for those that do plus know the other way to deliver a rear cross which while weaker has a better chance of landing plus their use of other limbs generally beats boxing.
