I loved this video! I know that the color blue is a rarity in nature and therefore fascinated me. From my early teens until my 30’s my parents lived along a small river. Dad cleared all the scrub along the bank and pulled a lot of the weedy growth from the water. Unless it was in flood conditions the river depth was only a couple feet. What we didn’t know at the time was dad had created a mini wildlife sanctuary particularly when it came to birds. On a number of different occasions we’d see a blue heron walking carefully through the water in search of food. Of course we hay many blue jays as we put up a feeder. Know I know jays have a bad rap for stealing food from other birds and chasing smaller birds away but ours were different. In addition to their loud raucous calls, the only food the were stealing was what was inside the feeder. The feeder was one of those tube with a number of perches around it. While we enjoyed seeing their manifest plumage, we did not enjoy their noisy raids on the feeder. First one would show up than another than another until there were a half dozen on or about the feeder calling incessantly. It didn’t take us long to figure out the meaning of these calls. They were the neighborhood dinner bell. The jays would stand on the perches, reach into the adjacent hole, grab a mouthful of seed an fling it to the ground. Within minutes they’d emptied the feeder and join the dozens of smaller birds on the ground below enjoying the buffet. Once every last scrap of food was consumed, they all fly off and go about their business. Early on we made the mistake of refilling the feeder right away. The small birds would be the first on the scene but word travels fast and the jays were back setting up a second sitting. It didn’t take us long to realize the up in the trees there were lookouts watching for when the feeder got filled so we began only filling it twice a day. Now I never actually saw it, but there must have been a blue bunting around because I recognized the call from the one given here. That’s what I miss about that house. All the birds, rabbits, woodchuck, raccoons, and the occasional dear, muskrat and skunk. There were snakes about but most were the garden varieties that posed do danger, although we did see water moccasins from time to time.
