Skies of Arcadia deserves a remake… heck, even an HD port .. either our screams are not loud enough or Sega’s gone deaf…

Or not enough people are screaming. I'd love seeing Vyse in more action-based combat

I think this is EXACTLY the type of content people want bro! I would imagine a significant subset of your subs are like me, big time rpg fans who are looking for a hidden gem or something. Youve played a lot so you may be a great source of that! In addition, youre also fun to listen to!
I wasn't expecting Shining Force III to show up on this list, but I'm pleasantly surprised to see it! It's one of my favourite SRPGs of all time and I couldn't begin to tell you how happy I was when the translation came out!
Trials of Mana (the remake) is one of my favorite games! I played it with Japanese voice acting and I thought it added to the game (the emotion and tone). I played Secret of Mana as a kid and I honestly think that the makers of Trials of Mana understand the "spirit" of the Mana series. They get it. They took everything I loved (even subtle things) about the Mana world and used modern technology to more fully manifest it. That development team deserves an award! I hope they remake Secret of Mana like that some day!

stupid zoomer. its a soulless 3d reboot. the original is the true version.
Thank you for making this video. There will always be amazing runners up that everyone remembers at the last minute and I'm glad we have someone like you to remind us of these amazing games.
Skies of Arcadia is one of my favorite games of all time. So creative and the gameplay is great, and all the extra side stuff as well.
Chained Echoes was so good. It scratched every 90s RPG itch you could have. Great story too.
Phantasy Star 4 is such a gem from my childhood, even though I never owned a Genesis. My best friend did though. A few years back I managed to snag a PRISTINE copy of it, case booklet and all from a local at a good price. Now it shall remain untouched until I die.......
Vandal Hearts is still one of my favorite strategy rpgs of all-time, first I ever played, then I proceeded to play Suikoden, FF7 after that, I was a kid living the rpg dream.
Phantasy Star 4 gets 11/10 for having a walking and traveling speed that is actually fast enough for modern tastes.
This list was a banger! 100% agree with your choices. Star Ocean First Departure got a FANTASTIC remake on the PSN. Can't recommend it enough. Both Octopath games are 11/10 also. Favorite series in YEARS. Glad I found your channel. Keep up the good work.
I'm really surprised. What a great list. Shining Force and Phantasie Star, my favorites. Wow 🤩
Dragon Quest 11 S is and still is so much fun to play and finish! I recommend anyone to play this ASAP
I hope with the pixel remasters out, more people will check out final fantasy 5. It's a true gem and the replayability is insane.
Just finished Skies of Arcadia Legends and now it's in my top 5 games of all time with FF4, FF9, LoZ: Link to the Past, and Tales of Vesperia. It was in my backlog for quite a while. Now I'm working on making a cosplay from that game.

Nice to see some phantasy star love in the video, takes me back to my childhood. I would love to see the series revived or even a remake in the future.
I'm always down to hear more of your favourites
Love your subtle hint at the genius that is Tales of the Abyss. Absolutely loved that story! Also, big love for Trials of Mana
I love FFV, was a nintendo boy myself too and this was like the gate for me. 25 years later here I am, watching videos about a dude favorites RPGs.
Thanks for the dynamic review, Davidvinc. It was really interesting and I picked up a couple of gaes that sliped my grasp for some reason. Now I will play them.
Great list! I just wishlisted Chained Echoes based on your recommendation. Haha your commentary had me LMAO
I actually found my old copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends yesterday. I started a new file last night, and I am glad I did. I have missed that game!
These are all fantastic choices David, I was not aware you felt that way about Tales of Arise! What about a top 5 of games you have a love/hate relationship with? I often wonder what new JRPGs coming up I will feel are 10/10 experiences as that is pretty damn hard to pull off. This is great!
I was obsessed with Skies of Arcadia as a kid. I think I played it 4 times in a row until my brother pawned the game off back to Gamestop for some quick money. Also, finally someone who agrees Tales of the Abyss was the best Tales game!
What a great list full of excellent games! It's really great to see some love for Phantasy Star IV, it is in a tie for my absolute favorite game of all time with Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne.
Tales of arise was my first JRPG, and I absolutely love it. Watching this video I am probably going to replay it soon
Bravely Default. Great story & characters, overflowing with content, excellent job system, and revolutionary gameplay! Very impressive list btw David.
Thank you for letting us know the systems that these gems are on. Great video!
I love that Phantasy Star 4 is on this list! One of my all time favorites
I think Tales of Arise is the most underrated modern rpg in recent history
Hi David! Your 10/10 rpg lists are 10/10.

Great game selection man. I'm working thru Chained Echoes right now and love it.
Gonna add something regarding Bahamut Lagoon. The version you showed here is the fan translation by Tomato/Dejap, which for a long time was the only English translation. However, another fan-translation, by the late Near, was released a couple years ago and is definitely the better translation. It was a passion project of theirs made over the course of nearly two decades and I really recommend replaying with that translation if you haven't.
Another great list. Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms, Vanguard Bandits. Started off with a banger and end with a banger.
We absolutely would have been friends growing up.
Phantasy Star Pixel remaster. cmon sega. copy this concept.

Except SEGA is sucking ATLUS' dick for more Persona games instead of giving us modern console ports of their classic games NOT found in collections. They've already released Phantasy Star 1 on Switch and PS4 with QoL improvements, why not do the same for the remaining 3, especially for Phan Star 3 as it's the black sheep of the OG series. Making Phan Star 2 and 4 less controller throwing and adding a map option for those tedious dungeons would make them even better than ever.
Much love for coming back for seconds. It really is a shame Shining Force 3 is so tough to access. Language barrier and difficult to find hardware are a double whammy to enjoy such a great series.
Trials of Mana! Yes! Glad you enjoyed the English dialogue the same way I did. It’s hilarious af lmao
As a child of the 80's and a massive fan of JRPGs, I love your content. Some other games I loved that have not been mentioned yet; Several Enix games. I am always sad when I think about what could have been if Enix was not acquired by Square. Other than FFVI and Chrono Trigger, I genuinely liked Enix games more. Not only did they make some solid JRPGs like the Dragon Quest series, they also made some very innovative ones like Illusion of Gaia, Evo and Actraiser. Side note, they need to do a pixel remaster for the Dragon Quest series. Just about anything localized by Working Designs. I bought a Sega CD just to play their games, I still own the Sega CD versions of Lunar 1 and 2. Besides Lunar, I also loved Alundra and Popful Mail. Shadow Run (SNES version). I have always had a soft spot for cyberpunk games, and this was one of my favorites back in the day. Speaking of cyberpunk games, another one of my favorites was Snatcher, a Hideo Kojima game that I never hear people talk about and which I believe heavily influenced his Metal Gear series. The Breath of Fire series, 2 is probably my favorite. There is one thing that I love in my JRPGs and that is secrets and these games had them in spades. Each character had their own abilities for traversal or getting past obstacles which allowed for a lot of hidden items. I also enjoyed how OP some of the fusions could be.
So glad you included Chained Echoes. It blew me away last year!
I know these are western RPG's but Fallout New Vegas, Wizardry 8, Might and Magic 6-8 and Arcanum just to name a few as my top tier RPG picks. Also Shining Force 3 needs to be re-released because the Sega Saturn RPG's don't deserve to be left behind on the diffcult to get and pain in the ass to emulate Sega Saturn, It's too bad Sega lost the source code for the Saturn.
Skies of Arcadia is definitely on my list! I had it on Dreamcast and regret selling it and the game to this day. The airship battles were in a league of their own!
I highly agree with this list! Now, I have more games to add to my list to play, it never ends!
Hi David absolutely, all of them a solid 10/10. Tx David have a great Sunday.
Really enjoyed these twi 10/10 videos! Keep up the saucy work :)
I really hope that Bahamut Lagoon gets the HD2D remake treatment and is brought to the west. It would sell like cool lemonade on these hot summer days.
If i have to name one RPG that would be 10/10 for me, it has to be Breath of Fire 3. I absolutely adore the game.
Out of this particular lineup, Phantasy Star 4 is the one I would most confidently give a 9.5/10. But that's based on hindsight. Most of us didn't have access to it back in the day because it cost $100 and was very rare. But if I had access to it at the time, its probably the closest I would have ever come to feeling a JRPG truly deserved a 10/10.
Dragon Quest 11 i played as my first one and put 300 hours into it, insane how fun this game is! Amazing world, music, characters, it's truly amazing. Another 10/10 for me would be disgea 5, absolutely amazing and fun srpg.
Some great titles like Phantasy Star 4 and Skies of Arcadia. Also nice to see some love for Shining Force 3, I too would like to see a remaster. The music from Motoi Sakuraba was fantastic, looking forward to his work on Eiyuden Chronicles. Always a pleasure to hear about your personal favorites. Keep it up, stay healthy and have a great day!
David you're such a nerd, I absolutely love it. I love your personality and your reactions, opinions and special love of RPG games!
I recently had the chance to play Scenarios 2 and 3 of Shining Force 3 thanks to the fan translated ISOs. And man. The game is AMAZING! The fact that some of your actions on Scenario 1 will affect something in later scenarios is FANTASTIC in itself. But everything about SF3 shines. The balanced difficulty, the secrets, the story... and that music by Motoi Sakuraba still gives me the shivers. I'd kill for a modern rerelease of SF3..
Always happy to see FFV get some love. Such a great experience
Really enjoy your videos. Currently playing trinity trigger and beacon pines . And getting ready to embark on tears of the kingdom
Great Skies of Arcadia artwork for the thumbnail. I'm probably too picky, critical, (pseudo) philosophical, or not confident enough to say something is perfect 10/10, but I can say what does practically everything I want. Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars is my favorite RPG due to it's art style, characters, music, and above all else it's simplicity. I can pick up and play it without worrying too much about puzzles, drama, or backtracking. And it has depth beyond that simplicity like hidden powerful equipment, secret mechanics, and glitches that can change how I play. With everyone trying to be Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and other inspirations, I'd love to see this get a spiritual successor.
Trials of Mana dub actually help launch the career of one of the VAs. It's Angela's VA if you are wondering. It's not a 10 but it is a pretty good game. I need to replay Trials of Mana but I want to play OG first.
Other than arise, EXCELLENT LIST! Love to see more! Speaking of the 16bit dq11 mode that would be cool as heck if they did it for ff16 even if it wouldnt make a damn lick of sense considering the kind of game it is haha! Also skies of arcadia is still my number two game of all time all these years later, I absolutely fell in love with that world and wish so much that they would port it!
I love, LOVE that we are in another golden era for RPGs/JRPGs ... I feel like I'm updating my top 10 or top 20 all-time RPGs multiple times a year now !! What about you David?
Was surprised to see FF 5 on this list, but i think it's also my favorite old school FF, i love the job system and was also amazed at the number of different world maps, i'm also a sucker for those.

I'd definitely say it's an underappreciated entry, and I would actually go as far to say it's one of the most defining, if not the most defining Final Fantasy game when it comes to "classic" Final Fantasy (2D, crystals, magic, medieval fantasy setting).
Oooo, we getting some Sega love today! Is it bad that I was thinking about Star Ocean 2 til you mentioned it? xD Another I would add to the list is Brave Fencer Musashi. It might be borderline on whether people consider it an RPG or a Zeldalike, but I even went back to it a few months ago and it was even better than I remember! The charm is off the charts, the voice acting is surprisingly good for its era, too!
I love Phantasy Star IV and Skies of Arcadia so much! It's so sad they are basically forgotten nowadays...
Trials of Mana would be a 10/10 for me if it had a tougher difficulty option. I don’t question you listing it though. Huge surprise to me. Chained Echoes and Skies of Arcadia being listed 👌 I’m checking out Star Ocean First Departure R atm. Can’t wait to finally try Second Story.

Chained Echoes is for sure a 10/10!!! Recently completed it, what a masterpiece. The fact that one German dev did this is just crazy.
Many people love Skies of Arcadia, and I would also say its an incredible JRPG, but there's something really holding it back... How the battle system interacts with the gameplay mechanics revolving around it, including how slow each random battle is, and load times. Most people played the Gamecube version, so they don't remember the horrendous loading times and excruciatingly frequent random battles on the original Dreamcast version. However, the encounter rate remains fairly high in the Gamecube version despite being reduced, and fighting every battle ensures all but a few challenges are a cakewalk. So in my playthrough, I often ran away from the random battles. However, there's a big problem with that- your reputation ranking decreases every time you run away! There's even a point where if your rank decreases to rock bottom, then you're locked in and it becomes impossible to raise your rank without starting all over. This happened to me, so I was prevented from 100%'ing the game since you need a high ranking to complete all the sidequests. The only way to prevent this is after making enough progress that you reach a special rank, from which point you are locked in at the other end of the spectrum, so running away no longer penalizes you. But that isn't until after getting most of the way through the game already. I can't think of any other JRPG off the top of my head that penalizes you in such a draconian manner for running away to make important battles more challenging. Its a game design element that refuses to value your time. Which would have been even worse on the original Dreamcast version, that thankfully I missed out on. The one saving grace of the Dreamcast version was the top notch sound quality. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, the Gamecube version got downsampled or lower quality versions of all the music and sound effects. Because of these downsides, I'd have to give Skies of Arcadia an 8/10. If the game didn't force you to slog through almost every random battle to maintain your reputation rating and the sound quality of the Dreamcast version were preserved, even just those two things would easily raise it up to 9/10.
I started with gaming back in 1991 playing on my sisters NES ( SNES came out in Sweden later in 1992- so going from nes to snes in 1 year was amazing, mario 3 to mario world etc) and Dragon Quest 11 is in my top 5 games of all time, highly recommend that game as well! Oh and I did just order Trials of mana (physical ps4 copy) for my ps5 now, always curious abouyt that one, and if David think its a great one- why not? only 200 kr (20 dollar) as well!

Almost forgot to add that SEGA is insane for not remastering or even porting SKies of Arcadia, the closest we ever got to a new one was... xenoblade 2? with the world as islands on clouds and airships around them.
I actually got chained echos but have played very little of it, after seeing this review I'm gonna give it more time.
Ah, thanks for mentioning FFV. I remember "totally legally" playing fan translations on emulator around 1997, and none of my school friends would ever believe it existed.
I really gotta pick up Chained Echoes soon. The best thing about this video is the fact that Chrono Trigger was on the first list and I didn’t need to hear about it again!
Final Fantasy V just ages like wine. So many ways to play that game and enjoy. Just too bad the baddie is the Tree Hugger Wish Goblez. 😂

Man, I really wish the Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy 5 had the added jobs that were in the Game Boy Advance version, but alas...
I've only platinumed 3 games.....persona 5, trials of mana and dragon quest 11 those 3 sucked me in and I couldn't put them down until I completely beat them...dq 11 literally made me feel like my 8 year old self playing breath of fire on my snes....its that good and nostalgic it literally came in that year and jumped straight to my top 3 games all time the first experience I had with dq 11 was the best time I had in gaming in over a decade at the time, something about it

Agreed, DQ11 is really something special.
Awesome video, man. We have nearly IDENTICAL taste in RPGs. I've been SO on the fence about Bahamut Lagoon. After patiently waiting for so many years, I played through Seiken Densetsu 3 with a translation patch on my SNES Classic.. finishing it about 6 months before the remake and collection were announced as Trials. Still a phenomenal game and I also LOVED the remake. THEN after holding out for so long, I FINALLY played Live A Live about 18 months ago...finishing it within weeks of the remake's announcement. So now...do I hold out for a Bahamut Lagoon remake, or potentially use my cosmic powers to will a remake into existence if I just suck it up and play through a translated ROM? Speaking of Cosmic...You ever played Cosmic Star Heroine? I truly believe it would land on this list. it's like Phantasy Star IV, but with pacing that rivals Chrono Trigger's and overall feels like a late 16-Bit or early 32-bit game and it is OUTSTANDING. About 20 chapters, each maybe 30-45 minutes long, it's a quick game with an excellent story, incredible music, and a phenomenal battle system. Check it out if you haven't - I'd love to see you cover it in a video someday!
Arise was my first ever tales game and I am officially a fanboy now. 11 was my first Dragon quest and it wasn't what I expected, I was a bit disappointed. By the end of it though I enjoyed the game.
FF5 is definitely a favorite of mine. There are so many possibilities. Making it the most replayed game in my rpg gaming

Tales of Arise 10/10? Hoo boy that’s a spicy statement. I really enjoyed the game myself but I’m not sure I’d agree with you on that one David haha. So happy to see the Trials of Mana remake here (though a shoutout to the OG would be nice :P). Just felt like everyone would praise the Super Famicom version, but when the Collection of Mana got a Worldwide Release it barely got a whisper. Then when remake came out-largely due to the voice acting-people who stood by the OG version hid away and didn’t defend anything else about the game minus the fact that the combat is fun.
Another great list.
Love these games…..I would even be interested in your list of 9/10 games
lmaoo bro you wildin 6:48
Watching David's videos is a 10 out of 10
Phantasy Star 4 is absolutely insane. Yesssss
The last 10/10 RPG I played was Evenicle. ...And yeah, yeah ...I'm aware it's DEFINITELY not for kids, but damn if it didn't have one of the best classical JRPG stories I've ever played through.
Will you make part 3?
So many great titles on this list: Phantasy Star 4, Bahamut Lagoon, Skies of Arcadia, Final Fantasy 5, and even the Seiken Densetsu 3 remake! It really was an excellent remake, too; I'd played the SNES version so many times that I almost always use the same loadout (Reiss as a Starlancer, Hawk as a Nightblade, and Charlotte as a Sage) because it fits my playstyle so perfectly, but this one completely threw that on its head with how much they tweaked the system; I absolutely BROKE the game with Duran, Angela (who was almost useless in the original), and Charlotte, giving almost the entire team infinite MP. They really did a great job building the world, too; the team who worked on that cared SO MUCH about the original game, and it absolutely shows.
Bahamut Lagoon was one of the most beautiful games on the SNES. I played this back in the day. Get the newer translation be Near.
Almost the same as in the last 10/10 video, scratch that, I remembered more. Xenoblade Chronicles, Trails in the Sky SC, Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana, Tales of Berseria, FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, FFX, Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, The Witch and the Hundred Knight, NieR Gestalt, NieR: Automata, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Super Paper Mario, Dragon Quest XI, Bug Fables, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Epic Battle Fantasy 4, Lost Odyssey and Bravely Default would be 10/10 games for me.
Just Subscribed!! :)
You should do these lists by console! There are so many great recommendations here.
