Watching UFC in 2020 with no crowd where you basically heard every single strike, every single sound the fighters would make along with the insults is one of my fondest memories of 2020. It was such a blast, plus Fight Island was something different too.

I was in the crowd at UFC 261 when it returned to Jacksonville Florida last April in 2021. I always felt like I was part of history when attending the event and it’s amazing to see what the pandemic did for the UFC in viewers and fan addition. Literally the best sport in the world.

To me COVID is the greatest thing to ever happen to the UFC. If it wasn’t for that so many people wouldn’t haven’t gotten into it (including me). My first UFC event was 243, but 251 is the one that got me to watch UFC religiously BECAUSE IT WAS THE ONLY THING TO WATCH!

Meh, I get it. It got put on the map more at that point for sure. We just needed something to do. And then all the media, podcasts that popped up over covid helped build up stories and let us connect to the fighters as people over seeing them as just ruthless warriors, for some. “MMA Twitter is a pretty awesome place to be” Dafuq??
I'll never forget: a few of us were shooting hoops - this was in the early 90s - and another buddy shows up and he's all geeked about something. "...you guys are not going to believe what i have back at the house, i got a hold of this video tape..." He's trying to explain it but we're trying to play ball and I'll never forget what he said and how he said it: "...nah, listen, it's not pro wrestling or boxing...it's REEEEAL fighting"! We all just kind of stood there searching for a point of reference but were coming up short...sure we'd seen a few fights here and there, at school or at the park but never two grown men fighting and definitely not a sanctioned event that was videotaped. Later on when the video store started carrying literally a tape or two, they were kept behind the counter and were not advertised. You had to know they had it go ask for it and oh yeah they wouldn't rent it to you unless you were above 18. It's kind of like the first time somebody told me, "I got to go to the house and hop on the internet"...I heard him just fine but there was no frame of reference to the word he just spoke. I'm sure all you young Thundercats are wondering, "is this guy f****** 90 years old or what"? But no, it's pretty nutty to think how much has changed from being a teen in the 90s to my 40s in the 2020's when fighting is basically commonplace all over the world and now a global entity / conglomerate.

"Champ champ" is just a marketing ploy for the dumb whoop whoop brigade that pay more attention to pressers. @@Strangegloves, I was a fan beforehand as well, and would still be if McGreggor had never appeared, but we are just individual, anecdotal examples. For the sake of this question, what matters is how many more butts in seats and PPV buys have grown over the years, and is there enough evidence to link some portion of that growth directly to McGreggor. I don’t know the answer, but organizations like the UFC do measure a lot of that data and base payouts accordingly, at least on an event by event basis. Assuming most of that information is public, somebody far better at math and analysis than me could likely settle this question for us.

I became a fan of MMA/The UFC during 2018. From 2018-19 compared to 2020-2022 there is a huge difference in fanbases. In 2019 Suga Sean was suspended so that fan base wasn’t even there, back then ESPN wasn’t even letting out PPV numbers cause streaming was still so easy to do. Now every bar, every causal, everyone knows at least one mma fighter and for sure knows MMA/The UFC. Even in 2019, it only started after the BMF belt.
