okay we know the incidental pearl harbor reference with pearl and marina, but a neat (and probably more intentional lmao) wordplay thingy i found was the fact that pearls are found deep on the sea floor, while a marina is at the surface, which is the opposite of where they were raised

@@SnoFitzroy in Japanese, "Marina" is a pun on "Marinate" and Pearl is named "Princess". Most languages follow the Japanese form. In Japanese their names are both double or triple puns with names of squids and octopi. Notably in Dutch, they're Lorelai and Mariana Tentacle, which is almost entirely different! If they're supposed to be a pearl harbor reference it's 1. not in the original japanese so NOA localized it as such and 2. not internationally recognized. so again I ask: why would the American branch of a Japanese children's video game company localize the names of the flagship characters in a children's game to reference a Japanese attack on America?

Useless fact: The American Squid Research Lab used to post all updates on Tumblr up to the reveal of Splatoon 3. Later on they started posting all updates on Twitter, just like the Japanese Squid Research Lab

The 3D vs 2D icons one is actually useful. By removing shading and detail from the weapon icons and reducing them to their recognizable shapes and colors, it's much easier to identify a small weapon icon on the HUD at a glance.

Yeah, you can see it in the first stage. No Splatoon singleplayer mode has ever been affected by later patches

Yeah the weapons in story modes doesnt get affected by patch notes In splatoon 2 story modes all weapons act like they did on the first version In octo expansion all weapons act like in the patch where octo expansion was released thats why stingray doesnt have the second phase in hero mode but it does have it in octo expansion

Using urinals to travel does sound pretty shitty. I’m sure it would piss some people off. The closest we have come to that is travelling in pipes during the final level of Splatoon 3.

In splatoons many clothing items they do have real world equivalents or references. For example the shirt named “slipstream United” is based of FC Barcelona’s jersey and the 10 on the back is a homage to messi when he was at Barcelona. The Squidkid IV shoes were loosely based off the Jordan 4 shoe. And lastly the stealth goggles helmet is based of a MICH-200 helmet used by many real world militaries for training use not frontline combat. But there are plenty more items with real world equivalents.

7:59 oh, funny lil story about that, turns out that in the Scarescraper mode for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, four communication options are present, being "help", "thank you", "hey" (essentially "This Way") and "Good Job". A fucking, 3DS game, that arguably didn't need any more than that "Signal" bullshit from the earlier version of splatoon, has more communication than the game that suffers without it.

Fun fact: I never played splatoon 1 and only got into splatoon 2 near the end of its lifespan

The reason why Marina was a asshole was because they wanted to display octolings as evil! But after the octo expansion they had to to patch her personality because it showed that octolings weren't evil, they were just fighting for their side! Thats how it was intented in the Japanese version, and she actually wasn't mean in the Japanese version. I love Marina and learning about this fun fact was so interesting!
