Adam is a class act that's for sure.

I've always known that Over the Edge 99 continued after a man died in the ring, but for some reason my brain never put together a very important piece of that puzzle. People that were friends with Owen wrestled in that ring. I'm sure there were some that wished they could have traded places with him. For some reason my brain always kept it to "Some guys went out and did a wrestle", not confronting that people who dearly loved that dead man were forced to go and perform where his corpse was just created. Damn, man. It hurts all over again.

@@madmanszalinski Luckily, that's not actually true. Earlier in the event The Brood had done one of their trademark Blood Bath spots, and the stain on the apron was a residue from that. But a number of wrestlers did see it, and were appalled to think it was Owen's blood.

I wonder if Owen's death and Jarrett being forced to come out right after factored into Jeff's decision to hold up McMahon 5 months later for the IC title. Hell if I was asked to perform immediately after losing one of my closest friends to avoidable circumstances I wouldn't have the best feelings towards Vince.

As bad as I feel for Droz, I also feel bad for D-lo. Imagine having to live with that on your conscience. Such a crappy thing for both men to have to live with, in their own ways.

Christ, the look on Jeff Jarretts face in that promo. Poor guy just wanted to be anywhere but in front of that camera.

I'd even go as far as to say now it's more interesting than the Attitude Era (although that might be a bit biased since we're still in the modern era and looking back on it might not be as interesting and that might have been the same case for the Attitude Era. I don't know.)

I genuinely really appreciate you doing this list Adam. I know ones like this are hard, and good on you, but there are important things on this list that should never be forgotten. Even if WWE doesn't want the footage out there, records need to be there so they never lose accountability and there's always a push for them to do better.

It's good but not nearly as funny as Graveyard Daveyard.

The fact that Droz holds no resentment at all for what happened, just prove the kind of guy he is.

When Misawa died, NOAH ended the show. That's the right decision when something goes that disastrously wrong. It's a terrible shame that WWE didn't do the same thing years earlier. Weird fact: Bobby Fish was on that show. Yes, that Bobby Fish, Infamous Bobby Fish. Spent a good chunk of the years from 2004 to 2011 taking part in shows for Pro Wrestling NOAH. That show was one of them.

Conversely what happened after Perro Aguayo, Jr.'s death? Did they stop that show? He suffered an internal decapitation, he was killed instantly so there was no disputing that something had gone horribly wrong.

No, NOAH didn't the show because Misawa died. It ended because that match was the main event and there was nothing more left on the card, unlike Over the Edge.

This video just hurts man. I've never seen the promo jeff Jarrett cut on the over the edge show but his face...I could never understand what he and many others back there must've been going through. And like others have said, I'm happy to see droz and dlo together in some of those pictures. Both of them are on the same page that it was just an accident and are able to see each other and smile. That's a great thing despite such a terrible circumstance.

you can hear it in Jeff's voice too, it's a lot shakier than it would normally be.. i've seen it once or twice and never want to again, it's out there if you wanna look it up (but I wouldn't unless you need a good cry)

I seriously don't know how Jeff Jarrett, Debra, Val Venus and Nicole Bass were even able to go out after Owen Hart's accident, especially Double J given how close he was with Owen

Even though D’Lo versus Droz will never air, it is in the vault. That match and Owen’s fatal fall are preserved for legal reasons of liability. Both files have “ Never To Air” on them.

I think in an interview D Lo did recently, he said he’d watched it together with Droz and neither of them could pinpoint exactly what went wrong. So maybe they’ve had access to the footage in recent years. It surprised me on dark side of the ring that they didn’t ask Martha if there was footage of the fall itself. I get it’s a sensitive subject but you’d think that’s something fans watching would’ve been interested in knowing. I assume there is, as I’ve seen the Kevin Kelly WWE HQ comments you guys are referring to.

I love that Adam has no problem ending videos on a somber note. Too many people try to make an upsetting list sound happy in the last few seconds and it just doesn't work.

I honestly expected that you will feature Chris Benoit in general, but I understand only going with the 2004 Royal Rumble match

WWE go as far as to cut out the legendary Kane return with Paul Bearer from his ‘top returns’ list just because Benoit is one of about 10 guys in the ring.

I remember watching the Taker v Bossman match when I was maybe 13? And the ending is burned into my memory forever.

I was at WM 15 and I was ten years old. The audience was quiet and confused when bossman was just hanging there. I'll never forget it

It was such a strange thing to do considering they brought him back pretty much straight after 😅 you’d think they’d at least write him off tv for a while and then maybe have him return as one of Taker’s demons. Just seemed like a shock moment for the sake of a shock moment with no real plan or explanation

@@btf_flotsam478razy that the two worst things (Benoit aside) were just months apart in 1999. While being one of the biggest boom years for wrestling, it sure had it’s dark moments.

Every time I hear of a wrestler dying or being seriously injured, it hits hard. But Owen Hart - one of my all-time favourites and, by all accounts, a genuinely good guy - had me in tears. The tribute show after, especially seeing Jeff Jarrett's and Mark Henry's painfully emotional eulogies to their very real friend, had me in tears. Honestly, just seeing the mention on this list, 22 years after Owen's death, has me in tears again. I don't think a celebrity death has ever hit me harder than Owen Hart's. Ric Flair will always be associated with the 'wooo', but to me, whose fandom began in the New Gen era, it's Owen. What I wouldn't give to see Owen accepting his Hall of Fame induction, two slammys raised, screaming 'wooooo', alongside his wife and family.

Had that accident never happened, we would have seen potential match-ups like Owen vs Eddie Guerrero, or Owen vs Angle, or even Owen vs Benoit. We missed a lot of what would have been technical masterpieces. Just imagine.

If the Rock had been wrestling any man other than Mick Foley, the hardest SOB who ever lived, he would have been guilty of manslaughter as a result of that I Quit match. Incredibly, despite having almost had his brains bashed out of his skull, Mick never even developed CTE- while his body is battered and worn to the extent that he can't even put on his own shoes and socks without help any more, his mind is as sharp and clear and charming as ever. But even as he's my favourite wrestler of all time (and probably Adam's too, judging from how he always uses a picture of Mick every time he says "Jesus" or "God" in one of these videos), it's not a match I could ever bring myself to watch.

I did... it's really good right up until he's handcuffed and the chairs start raining down on him. If Foley wasn't god, this match would have either killed him or taken so many years off his life that he would have passed away before his match with Orton in 2004

Well if it makes you feel any better, Mick has been a part of the growing number of wrestlers who had their lives changed by DDP Yoga. I’m pretty sure it was a few years ago now, definitely before the pandemic, but Mick took up the program, lost a lot of weight and gained a lot of flexibility back. Even gained back an inch or two in height since his spinal column was so damaged.

Adam handled this like a professional videos like this i can imagine are difficult to make because the vibe is very different

These are exactly my thoughts. Were they so baffled that they couldn’t react against this heartless man? Or were they afraid? Were there attempts to stop the show? Was the accident addressed in the locker room? It’s just too intense and sudden of a moment to fathom how the people there were immediately affected by it.

It was a very difficult situation. I would have cancelled the show. However I wasn’t there so can’t really comment on what should or should not have been done in hindsight. It must have been a very difficult night and decision to make. What was eerie though is a wrestler dies at a PPV called “Over The Edge”, where he fell to his death and The Undertaker, giving his character, won the title that night too 🧐

They weren’t told Owen had died, just that he’d had an accident, and most of them didn’t see what happened. Not knowing any better, they did what they had to do and got through the night, and they all felt awful about it when they found out the truth.

As a kid, I managed to beg my grandma enough to order PPVs for us. So at 10yo I got to see RR99 and WM15. So Foley/Rock "I quit", and Taker/Bossman Hiac. As a kid, I actually thought the stunt was super cool with the brood coming down and hanging bossman. But at 10yo I didn't know what a "good match" was. And even though I didn't understand it was a work I somehow just knew that it was a stunt and he wasn't actually dead. It wasn't until later when I became a jaded smark that I realized people hated everything about that match. Guess it was just a good memory to me because it was a time when I was super poor and got to order mania. Plus! I knew like...they would NEVER kill a man on PPV. (Sees #2 on this list) Oof. Glad I saw the cell match first >_>

The scariest thing about the Droz spot, was that it looked like a standard power bomb spot to transition to a commercial break or to cause a break in the match flow. Sometimes what seems like the easiest thing, turns out to be the most devastating

Rest in peace Darren Drozdov. You could have been a legend, but fate gave you a bad hand. I'm just glad you didnt have hate in your heart and found a friend in your injury. Rest easy.

On the Cena entry, it’s worth noting that he actually submitted FOUR times on screen, he tapped out to Angle AGAIN in No Way Out 2004, in a triple threat with the Big Show to determine the no. 1 contender for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania

Boss man was saved when Gangrel noticed he was literally dying and they freed him I remember the rock mankind, think it was more than 10 I still remember Owens death. Brett said he didn't believe Owen would want it to continue. Droz after his accident, was given a job by vince backstage, probably to stop a law suit. Saddest thing is that the incident happened on heat or superstars or something but it was aired, as I saw it. Agree but is ashamed this one was dark, Very Dark!

I was at Over the Edge in KC.. I was 13, and didn't go to another live event for almost 20 years.

They definitely don’t want you to see all of Chris Benoit matches

About the Cena Tap Outs, Tapping out is not "giving up" Giving up relates to a much more long term goal in life. Cena has won and lost championships but even when he did lose he did so knowing that he would keep on fighting. There is a reason he resonates so strongly with Make a Wish. The idea of "Never give up" relating to moment to moment decisions is just a recipe for injury and burnout. If anything that should be the deeper message, that knowing when to walk away so you can come back stronger is part of "Never Giving Up".

surprised the thing with Daniel Puder getting Kurt Angle with a shoot kimura lock and then his subsequent punishment of a match where Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, and Bob Holly all got to beat on him isn't one of these

Seeing different clips of wrestlers performing after Owen's fall is just haunting The one that hit me the most is the undertaker vs stone cold match, the camera was on Undertaker after he took off his coat and you can just see that he's on the verge of tears and you can even see him looking down at a spot on the ring where owen fell on.

I watched the Owen Hart tragedy as it was broadcast live...and i'll never forget Jim Ross words..."folks this is not part of the script...this is as real as it gets"....and then horrifically later on JR and Jerry Lawler having to announce the passing of Owen Hart

It's a work.

Even though the WWE hates Benoit (for understandable reasons), his matches were actually never taken out of Raw, Smackdown, and PPV matches on Peacock. As for how I know...my mom and I have watched SEVERAL of his matches on Peacock.

The JBL v Eddie match where Eddie bleeds everywhere would make my list had I done this. Crazy scary match.

one match you missed. The Kennel from Hell match between Big Boss Man vs Al snow. Also I still remember in the Jarrett/Debra vs Bass/Venis match seeing Nicole Bass with Owen Hart's blood on her shoulder looking at Venis during the match.

This list made me cry at the end.
