Great video! We care for #4 at the Petrol Lounge in Austin, TX. Another factoid is #4 was the only fiberglass bodied Batmobile that was actually used on the show. #1 was damaged (or broken down) while filming an episode and #4 happened to be available. The episode was "The Contaminated Cowl". #4 still has the crazy engine and the the owner drives it regularly weather permitting.

Years ago, I was very privileged to view a private car collection. I'm a die hard Mopar fanactic. I wanted to see the Mopar cars this person had. We went and viewed the cars when I turned to the side and my jaw must-have dropped to the floor and I saw The Monkeemobile. I was looking at that in disbelief when the owner said, "You missed this." It was one of the original Batmobiles. When I left after talking with the owner and viewing this perhaps once in a lifetime experience, my head was in the clouds! After years of seeing many incredible vehicles, I once saw a Rolls Royce with an extended truck for shopping that belonged to, I believe Princess Anne of England. The owner even offered to let me sit it the drivers seat. I politely declined. I do not believe I will ever see a collection like the one with the Batmobile.

My father, Jim Stephenson, worked at Barris Kustom for quite a few years. He was the shop manager there for most of those years and I started working there with him in 1973 when I was just 14 years old. My father didn't build any of the Batmobiles, but did do a bit of work on them over the years and I got to ride in the original one with my father in the Huntington Park Christmas parade around 1973-74. That was quite a day too. My father was driving the Batmobile and I was sitting in Robin's seat, but we weren't allowed to dress up as Batman and Robin for legal reasons so it was a bit weird for spectators to see two "nobodies" driving it. The parade was being broadcast nation wide live on TV and by the time we got to where the TV cameras and bleachers were the Batmobile was overheating and it blew one of the radiator hoses while we were sitting still waiting to move into the camera range and steam was billowing out from under the car. It looked like a cool "special effect" but it was a serious problem for my father and I. We were finally waved into the the camera section and then told to wait while the announcers talked about the Batmobile for a few minutes, and just moments before they were finished the engine quit running and then they waved us on to move out of the camera section and my father told me "get out and push the car!" I was just a little dude and that car probably had a half a ton of lead on the steel body, but I jumped out and start pushing hard as I could and, lucky for me, a few other guys came running out and helped us push it out of the camera range and off to the side of the street. That was my first, and my last, appearance on nationwide TV. Hard to imagine that car being sold for $4million. That's just stunning.

Excellent video! You hit upon many facts that just a few short years ago were known by only a few. There are a handful of additional details for the curious: 1) the high-res 1955 Lincoln Futura footage was of a fiberglass replica (the world's first) that Bob Butts built and is now owned by ventriloquist Jeff Dunham; 2) the Volo Museum 1966 Batmobile replica was built by Peter Borne, not by BKI; 3) the replica shown with the autographs on the door tops was built by John Brighton, not by BKI; 4) the one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura steering wheel was thrown away (!) and replaced with a 1958 Edsel steering wheel in third season; 5) the #1 car was driven at 70MPH for the helicopter shot in the Batman movie by stuntman Hubie Kerns; 6) the car that the Barris family currently owns (nicknamed the #2) was built by Bob Butts, and it should really be called the #6. Again, you did a great job with the video. It is obvious that you did a ton of homework to break through the 'smoke and mirrors.'

A really great job on this video. I was a big fan of the show in 1966. I have also always been a Ford guy. This is, bar none, the coolest car ever built. I want at least one of the available models, but sadly I am 67 and in minimizing mode, selling off most of my toys. I appreciate you providing ALL the facts and answering all the questions. Too many replicas claiming or inferring that theirs is the original car or one of the 4. It was like when I went to the Rock N Roll Hall of fame in August 2002 and saw The "John Lennon" army jacket/shirt and two weeks later, went to London and entered their "Hard Rock Cafe" ":Vault" where they had "The Lennon Coat".

CS, you covered a tremendous amount of info in this, and really glad you covered the Ohio recreation with the door mounted machine guns and retracting parachutes etc. What you mentioned about the 4th B.M. being a 427, this is the first time I've heard it was a Holman Moody built 427. I could swear that I saw one B.M. with a 427 Ford emblem on the front fender. but have not been able to find a video or photo of it. I know there's one B.M. (think it was sold at B. Jackson) that showed a "powered by Ford" front fender emblem. I had to slow the video down and freeze it, then blow it up to see it. Any particulars you have on the 427 B.M. fender emblem or similar emblems would be great. I put the B.M. in my top ten list, maybe #1, of the greatest cars of all time, particularly the Ohio fully updated recreation. Thank you!!!!

Number 3 used to be owned by a gentleman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He purchased it from Barris I believe in the 1980's. I remember reading a newspaper article about it and how it had been a childhood dream to own one. I met him in person in 2001 at a local car meet. He said when purchased, the body was mounted to the chassis with wooden 2X4's, and he had to make numerous modifications to make sure it was safe to Street drive. It was beautifully kept, and drew a bigger crowd than another guy's brand new Lamborghini

This and other tv/movie cars earned their keep touring the world in displays and car shows. I used to keep my race car in a storage unit when I was between houses for a while. In 1987 the munsters car and the batmobile were in the unit left and right of me . Don't know if the batmobile was a replica but it definitely was drivable. I could see when production first began but hard to believe it was never done throughout the years it was on. Although Hollywood also was too lazy and cheap to buy the proper rounds for the crow, so maybe not too surprising.

One scale model not mentioned is that Revell did a 1/25 model kit of the original Lincoln Futura that they've reissued several times since the '90s. It was originally tooled in 1957-58 and wasn't state-of-the-art even then so it has things like a multi-piece body.

The one fact that shocked me was the 1940s Batman show. They looked almost identical to the later 1960s show. The batmobile that came later was absolutely needed but the fights were very well filmed and staged. Love how George Barris created that muscly batmobile out of the Jetson's - like Futura. Also love how they sinc'ed the turbine wail to the 1960s batmobile as it drove around. Looks and sounds very convincing. Thank you for this list of facts.
