    Well of course, ya don’t wanna be stuck on the same stuff all time cuz it might work for some people an not for others. But I always know there’s new people so they might wanna see the old videos too. So I’m down for different concepts I’ve never heard of before. Plus like they say, I like to have an open mind, but not to much of an open mind, so my brains don’t fall out, then I’ll know nothin! An I’ll have to start all over again!😮😂😂😂 I get it, I get i! 😂PEACE!

    My father is deeply into Japanese culture and he has taught me about the concept of Ikigai a few times. It has resonated with me. To me, my own Ikigai is art and creativity. I strive to create wholesome things that bring happiness and spread positivity and hope in a world where everyone has become pessimistic about everything. Something that helps people break their chains. I’m good at art and drawing but I need to put the concept of improvement into function and get even better to reach this goal. Taking care of my mental health is a priority too. Perfecting my art style and finding people interested in my works is what I can be paid for.

    This is one of the reasons I really like Japanese history and philosophy! Yes, I started as a weeb, like many before me, but I have grown really fond of Japan as a whole (and somehow dragged my mom into is as well haha). I also love Japanese craftsmanship! They don't half-ass anything! They value and honour tradition, and quality above all else, and I find it so so inspiring. I also love the minimalism of traditional, Japanese homes. So many things are simple, yet they put in details where they matter. If you are interested in Japanese history, costumes and traditions, I can highly recommend watching the 1980's TV drama "Shogun". (Yeah the mc is a white man who basically ends up being 'the perfect Japanese citizen' - the meaning and symbolism in that is up to debate. It was definitely more well received in the US than in Japan) but it is so so beautiful and interesting. And it really does give an insight in Japanese culture in the 16th century. There is quite a lot of violence, sexuality and death in the series, so beware if you are sensitive to those subjects.

    I started studying Japanese culture last year, with the Sengoku jidai being my main focus at first (very original, i know). Before that it was mostly Europe and a bit of extra American history. It was very interesting and quite relieving to come across so many ideals and ways of thinking that are similar to my own, because my country (México) has always made me feel like a weird person. I don't speak/read Japanese nor do i have Japanese friends, but i at least know now that I'm not all that weird. Sometimes you're not alone in your way of thinking, you just need to look outside of what you know; sometimes, very far from your home.

  • @runewolf77

    @runewolf77

    Actually there's no such thing as a weird person. That's just people's response to people who do or say things that they're not use to. There's always people out there that feel as u do. They maybe far from u but they still count as a person! I mean if we spread out all the "normal" people a only a few here and there in the whole world wouldn't they be weird?

  • @addictedtochocolate920

    @@runewolf77I appreciate your words. Yes, i might've used the wrong term for the sake of simplification. "Outside the norm" would be less derogatory and accurate, maybe? I however don't feel wronged in any way, if only a bit lonely. And yes, i imagine there's definitely a "weird" Japanese person out there who would fit perfectly around these parts.

    @@Psych2goI do plan on learning the language both in written and spoken form, mainly because of my studies; relevant information on feudal Japan is often times only found in its original language. As for what I've learned, there is a lot of things that might not be that interesting within the context of this conversation (weapons, clothing, diet), but the constant i very much like about Japan is its focus on discipline; In my country it is seen as a very strict and rigid culture, but they're also known to make progress extremely fast and adapt themselves to modern technologies, like they did at the end of the Edo Jidai, *without* compromising their identity: a balance of priorities that i admire. It is a highly spiritual culture that values its roots and foments introspection, but isn't afraid to learn new things and adopt new practical methods. That was a really interesting video. Thank you for putting it together ^^

    Japan is very conservative. I wouldn't have done well in Japan. I would have been beat all the time and shunned by all my peers. I got it bad enough for my hypothyroidism in childhood with being fat. Being fat is literally illegal in Japan. My peers likely would have convinced me to off myself in childhood. It's bad enough when I already felt like that coming home from school.

    It’s called self-discipline, that’s what these Western countries and cultures lack. They do not know have to have self-control and selflessness. We all insist on indulgence of material possessions and obsessed with being selfish.

    @@addictedtochocolate920it is probably because Japan is a very ancient country. They have preserved their culture for thousands of years (1,000 years-therefore, of course they are never going to adapt to any culture but their own, but adapt Western technology and Japanize it into something very unique and attractive. For example taking a Westernized furniture, like a chair then turning it into a tatami. Then that’s innovative and elusive. :) ❤

    海外の人がイメージしてる「日本」って大体江戸時代かそれ以前の時代の事がほとんどな気がする。 1). Ikigai 0:31→そんなモノはない! 2). Kintsugi 0:48→なにそれ!知らない! 3). Wabisabi 1:10→大昔 4). Mono no aware 1:23→大昔 5).

    Usually, I enjoy the content of this channel. Before I get deeper into my take of this video, thanks to the creators at Psych2go for helping many people struggling with their mental health. However, I personally think that this video is a bit disappointing. First, while many of the concepts in the first half are interesting in terms of mental awareness, the are explained so superficially that the cultural experience of these ideas is not provided to those unfamiliar with Japanese thought. It also does not help that the lauter half mainly contains phrases which are everyday phrases rather than cultural images. Second, the inclusion of 「shou ga nai」is completely off the mark. In reality, this phrase acts as a bludgeoning tool against societal and cultural change in Japan. It's often used in conversation to convey that you just have to accept the status quo, even if it is more harmful for the individual. If you need any phrase in Japanese to make others repress thoughts and feelings, you would use 「しょうがない。」I do not see how this thought helps in terms of mental health. Third, modern Japan is the best example of a society which does not value mental health at all. The constant need to adapt to the group, a toxic ideal of work, a growing number of shut-ins, a high suicide rate... It would have probably been a more realisitc and helpful video if you had spoken about Japan's mental health issues rather than this video. I'm sorry for being so critical towards this video. However, as someone who has lived in Japan and interacts with Japanese people a lot, the country is not a good example for good mental health practice. I would advise anyone to do more research on the topics in this video to determine whether the ideas in this video really are beneficial for your personal mindset.
