So I had back surgery last year, not long before a disney/cruise trip with friends. I was forced to use a scooter for the first time ever. While I didn't use one on board, I did use one in Disney and earned a newfound respect for those who rely on them. It was shocking how people would literally run in front of you, causing you to slam on the breaks rather than allowing a scooter to pass by them. I quickly became paranoid that I'd run someone over by accident! It was very stressful, and I pray I never need one again. Now I make sure I'm the one human around to give those on scooters some space they are much less agile than us.

Disney is the only place I’ve ever hit someone. My husband was blocking for me to dodge something and this guy came flying around him and stepped about one foot in front of me, no choice. What I worried about was the kids especially at dusk. I did reach out and try to block them. And no I wasn’t going faster than the walkers, but if you leave stopping distance someone is going to step into it without looking as if they are in rush hour traffic and changing lanes 100 times is going to get you more than 2 feet ahead.

Even wheeled walkers can be hazardous. I use one (it's not motorized; it travels at the same rate I can walk on that given day). I was at a get-together with a bunch of tenants in the apartment building I live in and there was one kid who kept poking his fingers in the area of the wheel where the brakes would go if I had them on. I told the kid to stop doing it and when he wouldn't, I found his parent and said, "Look, keep your kid away from me. If he sticks his fingers in there and I don't see in time before putting on the breaks, he could get very seriously hurt and you'd be taking him to the hospital. Pay attention."

@@Shan_Dalamani Even the cables, depending on adjustments can be sharp! I’ve only had a kid wanting to play with my scooter. I told him to be careful, but didn’t totally stop him because we were in an airport and he was just bored but not hyper. He got a little more interested than things like the lights and horn and got interested in where the tiller breaks over to fold. It’s a latch. I told him he couldn’t do that as that he could get hurt and he pretty much stopped. There was something else he got interested in and when I said he would get hurt doing that too his mom gently called him back to her. And no, I didn’t let him push the horn but twice! And they were quick. That scooter doesn’t have a slow speed, so it may have been he wanted to mess with the levers. Although the key was off that was a definite no, especially if he then tried it on some else’s scooter why they were moving! In fact the waiter on one cruise nearly hit a cart of glasses because he didn’t realize I was just going at a low speed because I knew how! The maitre’d asked me to never give any of them the key again! Now I have a wheelchair, and the joystick is even more attractive. I’m not sure how I would have reacted if he was messing with the back wheels/motors! I must say I’ve never seen a kid do what you are describing, it sounds like he’d been around a walker before! The worst people for pushing the horns are the waitstaff!

    1. If there is a dress code, you should follow the dress code. If you don't like it, take a cruise without a dress code. It's not like there are no other options. 2. If the ship is nearby, it should help with any rescue. 3. Scooters are okay; scooter riders that act entitled are not. People who are insensitive to the issue are also not okay. 4. Yeah, cruise ships aren't the best, but they are always improving. 5. I don't like smokers, but I am willing to accommodate them. They need to be aware of how their smoke affects others. 6. Follow the rules! It's not cool to sneak anything aboard. 7. Technology exists; deal with it. 8. No opinion, I don't gamble often, but I have indulged at times, never much money though. 9. The cruise can't wait for a few people. That's life. For most of the pier runners, it's their own fault because they aren't good with deadlines and schedules. 10. Pay the gratuities! I would prefer they would just include them in the cruise fare.

My hubby found where he was in need of using a scooter on one of our cruises. It is almost impossible to catch an elevator especially during dining hours. We could have been the only ones at the elevator but, by the time an elevator stopped, usually at the other end, recent passengers would fill the elevator making no room for the scooter person. This happened all the time, not just some, but all the time. When we were cruising again minus the scooter, if there was a scooter person there, we found ourselves holding the elevator door and waving the scooter person on. There is no need to be rude and put your needs before those in need!

It's gotten to the point where I've decided that I don't need to apologize for having a disability. I don't push in where there's obviously not room enough, I don't deliberate hit anyone, but neither do I let myself get pushed around, or - a MAJOR nono - I don't let anyone just move the walker without my permission. People have tried that here in the building I live, in doctor's offices, in other places - and I tell them, if you wouldn't just move someone's wheelchair, you don't just move my walker. I need it within reach, and you are putting me at risk of a fall if you move it and I can't reach it. Not to mention that it's bloody RUDE - like taking away someone's crutches or cane! If they whine and say, "Well, it was in the way," I tell them that in that case, they TELL me it's in their way, and let ME move it, or at least give them permission to move it and then bring it back immediately.

There were late people that should have been left BUT we had a Carnival excursion that literally needed a police escort to get to the port because of an accident. The driver pulled right down the pier, helped off folks because they were sore sitting in the bus for so long and the entire port side passengers on balconies or outside decks gave everyone a standing ovation for making it back AND we didn't need to worry about missing the next port. A fun discussion of Issues. The reality is that most mass-market ships are so large and try to cater to everyone that you will see and hear about anything. At the end of the day its about mutuality of respect to your fellow passengers, the lines will make and enforce rules so that passengers don't indulge in activities that impact the safety and enjoyment of the ship, crew, and fellow passengers. People who are VERY concerned about mass-market lines being overly accommodating to the masses can find lines (or sailings within a line) that might cater to their personal interests and sense of enjoyment.

I’ve often wondered if anyone in Florida even owns long pants🤣 But I’ve seen a lot of people who know how to dress in shorts too. I’m thinking like Bermuda! My hubby hates dressing up as he had a uniform for 20 years. He will wear a collared shirt for me and on dressier nights one that looks like you could wear it to church!

My philosophy of dressing is that if you don't like what I'm wearing, you have my permission not to look at me. I once wore a shirt and jeans to a Shakespeare play, and some woman in an evening gown stared down her nose at me and made a snide comment to her husband. My take on it is that if she was going to worry more about what I was wearing than what was happening on the stage, that's her problem.

But what I will not do - is judge others for how they choose to dress for two reasons. #1 It’s their vacation and they should enjoy it as they please. #2 I’m way to busy enjoying my vacation to get all psycho over what the other passengers are wearing.

People may not realize we do not have breaks and no matter how slow we go it takes a minute to stop. Also I have had to wait more than 10 minutes to get on an elevator as a lot of people rush to get on the elevator as soon as it opens not even letting the ones off that want off. People should just choose the suitable cruise line for their lifestyle or vacation preferences. There are so many cruise lines to choose from. More prestigious, more relaxed, more formal, kids, no kids, all inclusive, with premium entertainment, with waterslides, more flirtatious, for younger crowds, for older crowds, for families, smoking, non smoking … Just do the search first, a travel agent could help. Problem solved

Exactly! If you want to get all formal and dress up and want other people you don't even know to be dressed up, then go on a more bougee cruise line. I cruise RCCL because it's smart casual all the time. If you WANT TO dress up, go for it, knock yourself out! If you don't, that's fine too! People that are there with kids on a family vacation are going to dress differently than let's say a couple on their honeymoon! Everyone paid for THEIR vacation, so it's their right to dress up or just dress smart casual, that's my motto. I have went up one side and down the other of people who would come at me on comments because THEY would be offended if I dressed how I wanted on MY vacation! People have to mind their own business and not the business of people around them that they don't even know!

Good list and I assume you had fun putting it together. MOBILITY SCOOTERS How about a serious consideration for safety while onboard a ship at sea. I personally have spent close to 20 years at sea. Both as a crew member and passenger. During that time I have dealt with three serious fires, flooding and other emergencies. What most people don’t understand is that mobility scooters in the case of a serious emergency immediately becomes a liability and places others at risk since additional personnel will be required to render aid. Blocking passages, staff pulled away from regular duties to go out and render aid since you obviously can’t just leave them behind. Seriously, people with mobility issues can easily end up being a serious liability during emergencies. The ocean is unforgiving and will turn on you in an instant. As for smoking, it has no place onboard a ship. Fire onboard a ship spreads fast! So why increase the chance of having one. Free cruises from gambling? Yeah right. That clown is just paying installments for his next cruise. Have a brother that has been in casino management for close to 40 years and he’ll tell point blank, the house never loses. Maybe today but the house plans are always for the long run and once they get you back with their “perks” they will make more from you than you ever win.
