From Canada. Spent four months in Chiang Mai, Thailand… .and the surrounding mountains. Don’t forget to go up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. If you don’t go up there….they say you’ve never really been to Chiang Mai. On a second trip, I spent two months in Siem Reap, Cambodia… and the surrounding area. You really need at least the three day pass to visit Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the other major ancient temples. One day is simply too rushed and hurried and you won’t see much more than just Angkor Wat itself. I followed that two months with a Giant Ibis bus trip across country to Poipet, passing into Thailand again, and spending four days in wonderful Bangkok. In my late 60’s. I’m 72 now, can still carry my small backpack….carry on size, with a cross body sling. I never check any luggage. Take care. 🙏🏼 ☸️ ✈️ 🌴 🌴 🌴 😃

I live in Phnom Penh Cambodia. Siem Reap's international airport has more flights than PP. If you have to go down from Siem Reap to the depressing but world famous tourist sights in Phnom Penh. Fly into Siem Reap and fly out of Phnom Penh. This saves you a day of traveling back to where you've already been. I've never met a tourist who did this & no one explains this to them. Also, 1,000,000 Khmer riel is worth 244USD, so an old US $1000 dollar note is what you need to get millions in change and very few people will change 100usd notes these days. You want nothing bigger than 20's & when you withdraw money out of an auto teller, change the currency in the auto teller to Khmer riel. It will give brand new 50,000 riel notes (12.50usd each) and give you good Asian currency conversion rates. I've never had one of those notes rejected by anyone here.

I'm a big world traveller like yourselves (59 countries so far but aiming for 100 within 10 years) and after looking at the great prices I can tell I will be using this a lot going forward into the future. I like to wing it on my trips and not book stuff too far ahead so this is perfect for me. Your KZread today has also encouraged me to go back to Croatia and explore even more of it (I only did the coast and islands so far) as well as see Slovenia.

I share your love of Chiang Mai and Costa Rica, and was recently blown away by Sri Lanka. The people, the landscape, the history, everything. I was on an organised tour, so I wasn’t really doing it on the cheap, but the restaurants we went to were very reasonable, and after the tour I spent a week in a luxury hotel with a rooftop infinity pool for the price of a two-star hotel in France. A buffet breakfast was included, and I ate so much that I didn’t need anything for the rest of the day, except maybe a few nuts and a beer in the evening.

never This is probably the best "travel blog" I ever watched. Having traveled the world over many decades myself - I can only admire how Nik can summarize facts and figures in such an entertaining but right-on-the-nail manner. I am familiar with all the places he lists - and yes - he is right on target. Based on the personal stories I heard from friends over the many years there is one thing I would not recommend to travelers in a foreign country. And that is "renting cars, scooters, boats, and any other vehicles that are to be operated under the laws of that country. Once you cause an accident or are just involved in an accident - you are no longer a tourist but a "milk cow' for the local authorities. Nothing touristy about that when you are delivered to an ER. You don't know the local laws, you have no legal representation unless you can afford it - and many times, the US Embassy in that country is your last resort to get out of the country - not to mention the money you leave on the table.

Truly great video for a quick glimpse of these lesser known destinations. I was especially happy to see Krakow on there & highly recommend Poland for those who want to see, feel, & experience a culture still learning to move on from oppressive rule. Our guides gave us so much insight into their personal lives in addition to the history of WWII & subsequent communist oppression. We spent 3 days at Auschwitz-Birkenau and still wasn’t enough…though it will never be enough to try to comprehend the incomprehensible. The Salt Mines were an unexpected treat…mind blown!!! The countryside views rival all known scenic destinations, even garnering a comment from my Italian husband, “could this be more beautiful than Italy?” I try not to compare because each location has its own incomparable beauty. We also loved Costa Rica staying just outside Manual Antonio National Park, but there’s so much more to experience. We visited a farming commune deep in the forestry mountains where the locals served us some of the best food we’ve ever had. Hubs wants to go back solely for the food. Even though we splurged that trip staying at a high end boutique resort, it was still less expensive than most of our trips, and it did not disappoint with providing exceptional service, food, views, anmenities and did I mention food 😏 I appreciate your videos, hoping to put many of your tips into action! ❤ P.S. Love your signature kiss on your wife’s cheek, keep that up! 😊

Zagred was wonderful. We went there last year. My wife and I both were blown away with Croatia and especially loved Rovinj. If we go back (as I hope we do) we are going to go back and spend a week in Rovinj. (We were in Zagreb for a total of four days and loved it)

Thailand always makes the top country to recommend after visiting 53 countries so far. Easy to get around, cheap, safe, and - yes - the food is soooo good. I lived in Philippines for 4 years. My first day there I was at a grocery store and noticed a bottle of local Tanduay rum was the same price as a carton of apple juice. Just a sign of how inexpensive it was going to be to live there. My friends and I would go to Anilao for the weekend. 8 dives, meals and dorm accommodation was about $150 for the weekend. You could easily make $100 a day budget there. Not sure you could make $100 on the West side of Costa Rice. Nice to see your point of view on the East side as it’s not well developed so probably contributes to its affordability. Took my adult family to Crete. Off the beaten past in non tourist restaurants we were paying about 1/3 the cost of a dinner out. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

I also like Zagreb 🙋 A note on the Acropolis in Athens and other sites around Europe: if you do some research, you might find they have free days to visit. I think I extended my stay one day extra in both Athens and Naples to be there for the free day for the Acropolis in Athens and Pompeii in Naples

Nice, subscribed. In 2017 I traveled to Bali. Food insanely awesome and cheap. Same with accommodations, depending on where and what was included. Transport was a bit of an issue for me because I would not rent a scooter and I was solo. The price breaks for renting a car or driver came with multiple people splitting the cost. My hotel did have free shuttle to spots and I’m sure if I stayed more than a week, there would have been much more.

I loved your video, but this was not our experience in the CR. We just came back from Tamarindo, Costa Rica three days ago, I was shocked at how expensive it was. Perhaps it varies on the area of CR. We did keep our budget to under $100 US a day, but this was not including our accommodation for $140 US a night which was one of the cheaper hotels. We are Canadian so everything was even more expensive with the conversion. We bought grocery's for breakfast and lunch and ate out every night for dinner. Grocery's were also outrageous. This opinion was shared by several other Canadians as well. I thought maybe it was just us, but I was relieved to hear other retirees also found it quite pricey. We had just come from Madeira Island in Portugal the week before and even though it was euro we were spending, I found it to be so much more reasonable. Thanks for your detailed video, great job! I would love to hear anyone else's recent experience and what you think.

M thought exactly on Tamarindo. It’s not cheap. I think it’s because it’s so full of tourist on the developed West side of the country. The video is highlighting the East Side which isn’t developed as much.

I am from Costa Rica. I can assure you that it is a beautiful place to travel, but it is definitely not cheap, much less for $50 a day or less. Puerto Viejo is much cheaper than Tamarindo and in my opinion more beautiful because the jungle meets the beach, but again $50 with food and lodging is not even nationals can get.

Thanks for the terrific ideas. We also did the Grand Circle in 2020! Zion felt like it was experiencing the pandemic right along with us - a few major hikes were closed for rock slides and for social distancing, and while The Narrows were technically open, rangers were warning visitors at every bus stop that neurological damage was distinctly possible due to unexplained, unprecedented levels of toxic cyanobacteria in the water. Many visitors took the risk anyway, and while we couldn't because of some immunocompromised family members, we hope someday to go back when the park has fully healed. Happy travels!
