    After living in the United States my mom sent me to live in El Salvador for two years with my grandparents and every morning before going to school I had to shower with ice cold water from the pila 🥶🥶 I used to have a little guacal and count to 3 before the first shot of water. It was torture 😫

  • @ThatExpatMom

    @ThatExpatMom

    3 жыл бұрын

    Pila water is definitely colder than the tap. Usually the water from the shower is actually a little warm (sometimes really warm) depending where the pipes are and how much sun they get. But the pila water has had a chance to sit and chill in the shade so yeah... That's a 1 2 3 moment for sure 😊 where in El Salvador did you stay? Are you back in the US now? What do you miss about El Salvador?

    About 30 years ago, we didn't have those "house" geckos here in El Salvador. I have heard that they were brought by someone, or if they naturally expanded their territory maybe from northern countries. I clearly remember in 1996 I travel to Campeche Mexico by car, and when we arrived in the evening to Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico, that was the first time I heard a gecko. We didn't have them here back then. I was 27 years old and I pay a lot of attention to nature sounds, so I was sure they didn't exist here yet.

    Hi Ernie, I was speaking specifically about security guards outside of housing complexes, restaurants, etc... which is pretty common here in El Salvador. Not about private security or police which are available in both in the US and El Salvador 😊

    @@ThatExpatMom Hi...wow...you replied! I just do not see what is the difference of private security guards and security guards in El Salvador.....they all are private security guards....I don't mean to be argumentative , just believe security guards are common and the serve same purpose In USA as well as E S

    Hi yes I try to reply to everyone (my aunt has been visiting so I'm a bit behind 😊). The point I was making in the video is growing up in San Diego California my apartments did not have armed guards at the entrance checking identification before allowing entrance whereas my homes here in El Salvador all have. When paying rent here there is the fee for rent and the fee for security. I was not trying to say there aren't police or private security guards in the US. 😊 I hope that helps.

    The medical service is free for all, that includes prescriptions, but the service isn’t good at all. If you can afford it, better the private sector of health services. Much cheaper than the states and medications also better prices than in US. I think is not necessary to buy an insurance, you pay for the service you get. There is also alternatives as foundations that are private and the payments are more symbolics than profitable. Also there is the Seguro Social, Health Service for the workers of public and private sectors that get a small discount from their pay checks, state service but much better than the national public services. About to buy or rent a house, that will depends of your living standards. If you want to rent something like for an American middle class standard, you pay something between $500 to $900 per month. $900 for a brand new apartment in a new building, but can pay the same or less for a big house not new but in a good neighborhood with enough room for a small store in the front of the house. If you want to buy, the brand new apartment can cost between $100k to $150k with 3 bedrooms in good neighborhood with pool in the building and sometimes also GYM and common places for reunions and parties. A not that new, but big house can cost $60,000 and up. A brand new house with 3 bedrooms but not that big, you can pay $65,000 and up, but most of this new houses are out of the city, where there is no more room for these type of constructions. More closer to the city, more expensive, and usually more luxury. I’m planing also to go back to ES, and buy my own place and start a new business.

    Greetings from Australia. I have been living here for almost 30 years (from El Salvador) and Aus homes sit between ES and US. Like the US hot water and bath tub are standard as well as screens on windows and doors (main and to the garden), home construction similar to your description of US homes. Also flooring has been mainly carpet throughout the house and tiles (ceramic/vinyl) in the kitchen and wet areas (bathrooms, toilet and laundry), although tiles are fast becoming popular/standard like in ES. Some middle of the road aspects include having a kitchen as standard but other appliances are one's responsibility (like in ES), although dishwashers are fast becoming standard (at least in new homes. Our home was built c.2005 with no dishwasher). Dryers are optional, it would be handy to have one but not a must, ours broke down about 10 years ago and haven't replaced it. Although there is no pila here, there is a deep sink in the laundry that would mimic the pila in ES. Also like ES peepholes are not standard, we don't have one, but again new construction has that added feature. Ah, before I forget. I don't know about geckos but here kangaroos are not common in cities, on the outskirts one may be lucky to see a few, but in general you would need to go the outback. So in Aus there is a bit of this and a bit of that, middle of the road. Good comparison video, keep up the good work and hopefully we all can come out of this pandemic and enjoy the wider world.
