10 Hours Endurance Racing | My First 1000 KM FAI Triangle Glider Flight

Ғылым және технология

It is a big dream and a huge challenge to fly a declared 1000 km FAI triangle with a 18 m sailplane in Germany. The weather forecast and the weather conditions must be perfect and you are not allowed to make any bigger mistakes during 10+ hours. I nearly made an outlanding after 800 km...
A huge THANKS to my father for the aero tow and my brother for the ground support!

Such a great video. Learnt to glide on Grob 103s as an air cadet out of Swansea Airport in South Wales and spent every weekend on cable tows to 1000 ft and flying circuits. Managed some longer flights and thermaling and managed a 45min flight at one point. Can only dream of what a 10 hr flight must be like! Nerves of steel there and exceptional skill.

Thanks Stefan for sharing these big imperssions with us! Nice flight, nice edit, cool music and helpful comments to also take the paragliding pilots for a ride. Great job. In case your vario missed logging the flight don't worry you fly for the impressions, the scenery, the highs, the lows, discovering and understanding the nature and so much more than OLC points. Took me a while understand that but now even a glide down is cool again:)

Hi David, thank you very much! Yes, you are right. The impressions and experience are the most important aspect of a glider flight. The category of the PowerFlarm was not high enough for record flights and I also made a mistake with the finish line.

@@SteFly Anyway you cleared 3TP, had had quite a low save in the blue, amazing views high under the clouds. Nice flight. For the olc how about a backup like an xc-track on the phone would that be valid for sailpanes? Alternative a small solar powered xc-tracer. Or does it need to be connected to the planes instuments to read if possible engines are switched on?

Congrats! A FAI 1000k on pure thermals is a great accomplishment. I would like to suggest that you wait a bit to retract the gear; when you do it so low, you increase your possible workload if the rope breaks or the engine coughs. My approach was to wait until pattern altitude to retract, still early in the tow but with plenty of time to deal with an emergency. Unless it was the Open Cirrus with the hitch inside the landing gear :D

@@SteFly Sorry, forgot to ask you, Stefan - at the beginning of this video you have said that yours ASG-29 had full water ballast to fly quicker. Later on during your flight you was in a quite difficult thermal situation, when you had just about 250 meters AGL and luckily you have found this "saving"thermal than - did you have this water ballast during the whole flight or you have dropped this water when the thermal conditions were weak or "eben nicht hammerhaft""?:-) What is your personal criteria to drop water in flight?

Just great 👍, congratulation!. Long ago I flew a DG400 beside soaring as instructor, but gliders and glider performance never lost the attraction.

Thank you! This year it is really important in our area to have bug wipers. In the last years it was not always necessary...

Hast du das Geräusch vom E-Vario in XCsoar geändert? bei mir hört sich das anders an, also beim steigen ist der piepton länger als die "lücke", bei dir sind ja beide gleich lang

Maybe dumb question, but how does it stay up? Thermals? Updrafts? And how do you know where they are?
