Unfortunately, several homemade helicopters crash during test flights. Or worse still, some don't even manage to get their helicopters airborne.
However, we know 10 people who built helicopters and flew them.

The Ugandan steel helicopter builder is a genius! To make a successful helicopter out of heavy steel shows just how powerful and well built the helicopter is. I agree with the narrator. Perhaps it was a lack of flight experience that had the helicopter crash. It is likely he rebuilt it.

I don't think it was lack of skill. He seemed to hover pretty well. Looked more like a tail rotor failure of some kind, either to loss of rpms or a stuck anti-torque pedal. The pedal he could have maneuvered out of of he weren't at a hover. But not any kind of mechanical failure. He could also have been using his throttle instead of his collective for altitude, that can also lead to loss of anti-torque control. Either way, once he was spinning it was almost a sure thing he was going to dynamic rollover the ship when he touched the ground.

Joseph Nkaheza - Made a good bird but it lacked power. You could hear ( 2:42 ) and see when the rotors began 'coning' (2:50 ) ~ losing speed and he started descending. That was his que to land. He pulled more collective and slowed the rotors more( 2:58 ). As he pulled more collective he overpowered the tail rotors ability to counteract the increased drag of the main blades and then began what's called 'loss of tail rotor effectiveness' (3:02 ) LTE is established and unrecoverable at this point. Lack of proper power for the weight of the craft contributed to Pilot Error. He *could* have gained forward flight without additional power. The hover requires a lot more power but slowing to a hover to land would have been more of a slide in.

You just answered the question that troubled me. Thanks, how is the rotation of the entire fuselage overcome though? Since in helicopters the tail rotor serves that purpose.
@jackcobb1090
Жыл бұрын
@@graciousaaron3327 Great question. I wondered that, too. It doesn't seem like a feasible design but it works. 🤔
@cedriclynch
Жыл бұрын
@@graciousaaron3327 In the autogiro/gyroplane the main rotor is driven by the air flow through it. There is no torque transmitted to the rotor by the shaft, and therefore no torque reaction tending to spin the fuselage around its vertical axis. This means there is no need for a tail rotor, just a tail fin to help keep the fuselage pointing in the direction in which it is travelling.
