We love herding your stories, seeing your messy/clean pics and answering your questions!
I take the time each week to review all the comments on our KZread channel, blog, Facebook page, Twitter feed, etc. There are a copious amount of requests for dusting cheats. Here are 10 quickies that will cut your cleaning time and most of them won't cost you much. I'm all about figuring out shortcuts that will not affect the outcome of the task, or better yet, improve upon it altogether.
So in no particular order, here you go:
10 - Ceiling fans and light fixtures - use a bendable duster to do this, you won't need a ladder (unless you have really high ceilings), you can bend to suit any light configuration (including a ceiling fan, just bend 90 degrees), and you can remove the cover and machine wash. I got this one at Wal Mart and it cost me under 8 bucks.
9 - Corners, moldings and door frames - spiderwebs and dust aplenty here. This area usually goes ignored, but here's the laziest, easiest way to do it. Grab a mop pole and old sport sock, flip the sock inside out and place over the end of the mop pole. Now, you've got an amazing high-duster! You can also use microfiber cloth secured around the pole with an elastic band.
8 - Walls - we get asked this a lot. I personally don't dust my walls, but if it is something that needs to be done, you can simply use a flat head mop (like a Swiffer) and use a Microfiber cloth sprayed with a bit of water. No need to use an expensive product here! Simply work the tool up and down the wall using a 'W' pattern to save time and energy and to ensure you are covering the entire space.
7 - Bathroom vents - these get super dusty - they run for a long time and suck up tons of dust. The next time you're cleaning, use your vacuum with brush attachment to suck up the dust. Now, your vents won't look like those of a mechanic's shop.
6 - Baseboards - revert to trick # 9, use a mop pole with a cloth or old sock attached to it, lightly sprayed. No more bending down, no more tough work. This makes the job so much easier and also allows you to access hard-to-reach areas like behind furniture.
5 - Delicate items - to clean ornaments, antique pieces, silk flowers or small delicate trinkets, lightly mist a small paintbrush and use that to do detailed dusting.
4 - Dust in the right direction - dust is like snow; it falls from the top to the bottom. So, when dusting, start with the highest items and work your way down to the lowest. If you don't, you'll have to repeat your work. Another good thing to keep in mind is to work in a spiral formation - working clockwise tackle all four corners and mouldings, then move down and dust all tops of frames, etc, lower again to dust all table tops and finally all baseboards. Then vacuum. Do you see how this allows no dust to fall on an already cleaned area?
3 - Use microfiber cloths - I've been spouting off about them for years. I can't understand why you would dust with anything else - it makes you spend more time cleaning! A microfiber cloth is electrostatically charged, meaning it literally attracts dust. It is also highly absorbent so it can last longer during your cleaning task. They won't leave lint or dust behind and leave surfaces streak-free.
2 - Clean your ducts every 5 years. That's a huge source of dust and allergens and if you have had renovations recently or have lived in the house after someone else has, this is the ultimate form of dusting. A vehicle will come by and vacuum your vents out, leaving no residual dust in the home environment due to dirty vents.
1 - To vacuum delicate areas or areas where you can't see, vacuum with a pantyhose covered dust brush. The nozzle can now collect dust while using a dust brush without running the risk of sucking up valuables or items you don't want vacuumed up!
Hope that has helped you - what are your dusting tips?

Melissa I love all your ideas so much I bought the 50 diy cleaning recipes. This really works I used it on 2 items that sort of go unnoticed, its been 2 weeks no dust and I live in Texas with all those dust storms. Magic Dust Repellant 1/2 tsp olive oil (helps to repel dust) 1 teaspoon vinegar (kills dust mites) 1/2 Cup distilled water 2 drops dish soap 10 drops lemongrass essential oil (your choice) Add to spray bottle Spray on microfiber cloth Use this mixture once a week, and keep dust away longer

In addition to dusting from top to bottom, always dust either from left to right, or right to left when entering each room. This way you will do a complete dusting with no backtracking. Last of all, dust the middle of the room and don't forget the light fixtures.

I have certainly been delighted by the Swiffer. I hate dusting as a rule and have heard how marvelous they are, so ordered the started kit. Used it yesterday and was so impressed at how easy and clean it left my surfaces, lights photo frames and other furniture, I have today ordered the 360 one. I also love your Makers Microfiber clothes, best ones I have ever used.

Being a cleaning professional, I usually recommend vacuuming last as a means of "cleaning of your cleaning mess" and its generally more sanitary. However, if you live in an excessively dusty or areas with tons of pet hair its often helpful to do some vacuuming before dusting so you don't stir that up into the air. Its natural for dust to move around as your dusting. The more you can keep your house dusted, make sure you replace your air filters regularly and vacuum regularly, the more it helps.

Wow ... Can't believe I've never thought I'd putting microfiber in Swiffer mop to dust walls!! I've been mopping using that method but never thought of that, so yay thank you!! I actually love watching your channel cause even if it's something I know it have done before it just inspires me to clean. Every since I've started watching about 2 weeks ago I do at least one cleaning task every day and my house is already clean, so now I'm doing detail cleaning (things that you normally don't bother cleaning like vents, drains etc.) After I get that done here comes organizing!! Fun fun fun lol. But really just doing one thing a day makes a huge difference!

Dusting Tip #11: Strap a microfiber cloth to a vacuum extention wand with a rubber band or elastic and start vacuuming. This will give you twice the pickup power than you had using the regular microfiber or vacuum. It also allows you to get into harder to reach areas such as using this technique with the crevice tool. You can also cut fingernail sized holes and attatch your dusiung brush to it, pushing the bristles through for three times the pickup power.

These are very helpful because I hate dusting because I'm allergic to dust mites and when I dust my hands break out in rashes and I have a hard time breathing. So I actually have a few tips of my own for those like myself that I've found works very well for me.To protect yourself well dusting wear dish gloves to protect your hands,to keep falling dust or particals from getting in your hair and breathing any in wear a shower cap to keep the dust out of your lovely locks and wear a face mask that is meant for painting to keep from breathing in heavy dust and goggels to keep your peepers safe if you don't have all those things wear a closed moto helment that works too and some work gloves for your hands. You may look a little silly but it works and helps it's great for us allergentic people. After your all done dusting keep everything on till you wipe them all off with a hand whipe to clean off any dust that got on them and so the dust won't touch you.Something I do extra you don't have to is I whipe my face clean with a face whipe and clean my eyes with eye wash and put ina few allergy eye drops to keep them happy and clear because they can get very earatated and I whipe down my clothes with a lint roller and all that has really helped me when I'm doing my dusting.I hope this helps others like me who deal with this too have a happy healthy day everyone.

another tip for under the bed: Get a long handled squeegee. The squeegee will pull the dust up and also drag anything out from under the bed. You get dust bunnies and it is great for pulling pet hair out of the carpet. I use the short squeegee that I use inside on the windows for the cat tree too.

One thing which I'd like to know, I have used the sock over the broom handle trick, but I was told if you wet it, cobwebs or those dust trails or whatever will actually stick to it better so it does'nt just fly down into your face. Same with blinds but I have not gotten to watch your video tips on that. Thanks again!

Thank you for creating all these cleaning videos!! I am extremely messy and I admit the only cleaning I often does is my bathroom which is squeaky clean unlike my bedroom which accumulate thick dust. I am extremely lazy and I always put the cleaning on hold but recently I noticed my things keep piling up and I really need to put it away before I can't even walk in my bedroom. I live in a dorm-like room so whenever I buy snacks and all it keep piling up. My floor is ceramics so I can't exactly use vacuum cleaner. So I'm worried how I am supposed to clean my filthty yes Filthty ( I even see the dust becomes fucking cotton dust) bedroom now. I will take up your advice on the Microfiber clothes and also Vinegar. Although I am undecided between vinegar, lemon water or baking soda to clean those thick dust. My country is in Indonesia and so some of the products you use might not be sold here, so if you could provide alternative tools in a video for all the products you reccomend(things that is common worldwide), I'll be extremely grateful. Please tell me which one I should use between the three, it'll certainly help me a lot. Also if I use one of those, should I wipe it with water again after that or just leave it at that? I usually use Tissue and White Wood Oil ( Minyak Kayu Putih) to clean the dust as it gives a disinfectant for germs and the like also in a site I read, but I'll use too much tissue that even though the dust do stick a lot because of the oil. So I will use the microfiber cloth now. But how do you clean that microfiber clothes clean after using it? Do you have a tips on it too? What about the dust and haur sticking on a broom? How do we clean that? Thank you and sorry for asking so much. I see you as an expert in cleaning and I really Need some advices! >_

Dusting is my least favorite to do when cleaning mostly cuz the dust gets in my eyes and my sinus flare up and get congested from dusting that lasts for a week and by time im back to normal it is already time to dust everything again. T_T my other least favorite thing to do is organize everything, i never know where i what to put everything to make more space ^_^"

darkangelkitty34 My sister gave me a dusting tip last year. Wet your cleaning cloth with water and wring it out. Dust with the damp cloth. Rinse dust off when needed. Clean other items in your home. Dust does not get stirred up as much and the surface is much cleaner for longer when using a damp cloth 😀

Thank you for making these, I love every one. My mom was not a good example of the right way to clean house when I was a kid. I pretty much taught myself - and I got to tell you, my way is slow going because I didn't have any tricks. Thanks to your excellent instruction, I am becoming armed with cleaning tricks galore. Thank you, Melissa 💗

MuliBoy Just use the 15 minute rule. Anytime you leave your home for more than two hours the first 15 minutes after you return will be spent on cleaning, or organizing you home. In a short time you will start to finding it hard to find something that will take 15 minutes.

Walter Holt Walter, you obviously haven't seen my hose or don't have children! If it works for you that's great...but seriously almost everything that is to be thoroughly cleaned takes more than 15 minutes. Peace.

John Henry It is a matter of time management. Sites like this can help with information, but it takes you to have a regular practice to save the time you may be wasting from procrastination or just doing the job when you 'feel' it is. Maybe you are taking the suggestion too literally.
