Had to laugh hubby has just come in and said “ shall we have tea in the dinning room” 🤣🤣. During lockdown we got dressed up on a Sunday night for tea in the dinning room.

Exactly!! That’s the way to do it.
As always, great support and advice. I credit you, and the other "can do" people, for giving me courage, and showing me what a clear goal and persistence can accomplish (great stuff!). The fear drops away, and I am willing to give it a go. I recently built a computer monitor riser for $20 (the real wood ones sell from $120 to over $200, very out of my $ range). I channeled you and Mike, the store cut a stair tread and three pieces of wood for me. I took that home, drilled a few holes, put in a few screws, and it all came together in one short afternoon. I spent weeks thinking about it, but only a little time was actually needed to get it done. I think this is true of many things - I waste a lot of time overthinking, instead of taking action. Some things require you to start, and then figure it out as you go along. * I thank you, and my neck thanks you! * Because of this video, Repainting the hall bath in Jubilee blue will happen today. I am so chuffed!

Smashing video👍 when my daughters were teenagers and wanted their bedrooms redecorated and chose a different colour for their theme I would buy dylon washing machine Dye, pack of salt ,and Dye their old bedding and curtains to match the new colour scheme. Much cheaper than buying a whole new set of soft furnishings and bedding!

Yes Jane, a clean, a declutter, a move around and a lick of paint never fails. I regularly use my dining room as it overlooks the garden. Somehow meals always taste nice in there. I've now finished weeding and tidying the garden and have today put out my bright pink bistro set and colourful umbrella which instantly lifts everything. I also think the house brightens during the nice weather when the light changes both inside and out. This is happening right now in my region of the UK, where we are at last having some nice weather. 🙏. Thanks to you both for this great video. 🤗

My friend and I trade home decor regularly. Saves us a fortune. Neither of us spend any money and have "new" things to change the look. I borrow party dishes, extra chairs, table linens from friends and family so none of us have to invest in all that stuff that rarely gets used and tends to clutter up a home and cost money. Yes, cleaning really helps to fall in love with your home and helps contentment grow. I buy paint greatly reduced because someone didn't like how color turned out. The hardware store will even retint it for free. I find lighter colors are easier to make changes to. Found box marked free alongside road today with at least 50 yellow iris rhizomes in it! Came home divided and planted. I found a beautiful antique dresser by garbage can in our neighborhood I'm still using.

I love this
A cheap string of solar powered lights can cheer up any old patio or garden corner or a battery operated one can brighten up dark corners. I also think a well placed plant makes many rooms more cozy and inviting.

So true!
I would really like to encourage people to overcome their fears about tackling home projects on their own...many are very doable by a person of ordinary skills with a few simple tools. I have accomplished various projects to the satisfaction of my husband, a general contractor, by planning ahead and working very slowly so as to not make (serious)mistakes. He is so busy working on other peoples homes that he often does not have time to attack the projects I want done. (And I am a rather small woman in my seventies.)

I wholeheartedly agree with every point you made. Taking time to declutter is especially helpful if you feel as though your house is too small. However, I would like to add my favorite frugal way to love your house more: Do things to make memories at home! Have friends or family over for a potluck, "grill and chill" in the yard/ garden, or night of board games or cards. Plant a tree or flowering shrub to mark an occasion or milestone. Mark the kids' or grandchildren's height on the door jamb or an old board as they grow. Take a picture of your pets in their favorite snuggle spot or doing something silly. Get to know your neighbors, especially if they're older, so you enjoy your neighborhood more. The memories make the house a home!

Dear Jane and Mike, thank you for the great content and message that you transmit. Whenever you show us your home and garden, I feel that it must feel like it's absolutely worth it being frugal. Having renovated the house yourselves and having such a lovely view and landscape. You couldn't ask for more!

Our pleasure! And it is.
We bought a few sets of cloth napkins a little while ago on leboncoin and at Emmaus for very little. A good wash and they've really added something to our life, changing them and the placemats always gives a little lift, and we use less wasteful throwaway stuff too.
Thank you for resurrecting the DIY decorator in me!
I am so glad that springtime is here. I switch out our heavier comforter and it's burgundy and gold. It gets hung on the line and then stored away, and out comes the lightweight garden print cover for the bed. It just screams it's outdoors inside. I pull down all my heavy drapes and wash them of needed and hang them on the line for a freshen up, then they go back up, but get tied back for the season.
Buying or regrouping home-plants can change the atmosphere as well.😊

Hello Jane and Mike from Illinois, USA. Love your frugal tips and excellent presentations! I like to refresh my home using similar techniques. But I also change my outdoor space, my home garden. I have planted my garden so that every room has a nice view. When I can't find something to change inside, I will move the outdoor patio furniture, relocate some planters or divide a clump of perennials and replant to another spot. Throughout the warmer months, I look for needed yard supplies or decor on deep clearance, shop yard sales, and sell used garden items I don't need or want on FB.

Hi Jane and Mike, after watching this video I am inspired to declutter clean and reorganise my home room by room. I have inventories of my stocks which I try to keep up to date but while cleaning and reorganising my storage places including the fridge and the freezer and rewriting my inventory sheets( I have a page for each area) I intend to have a no spend month in June so it will set me up with the information I need to meal plan for that month. It will also allow me to check dates on things and to pull out any part used items and get them used up to make more room in my pantry and storage cupboards.

June and July are no spend months for us too
Super. There is Always something that we can do to feel even more comfortable in our homes. For little bucks. No need crazy spendings. Re arrangement, simple decluttering for instance, plants, change of place of accessories, basic fresh paint...I agree with all. More simple and clean works great I think. Some people like to buy more and more new stuff for decorations, but that's 'eating' the space and the oxygen inside. Well organised and maintained clean home is always a win. And to love and do with what we have got. You couldn't say it better. 💫👍🏡

We just did a big declutter of tax, insurance and business paperwork. So nice to have it gone.😊
This is a long holiday weekend for us in America. I got rid of tons today, all given away on local Buy Nothing. Everyone was thrilled to get the canned goods I no longer had a taste for, small applicants, a printer I no longer use, and other small household stuff. My small apartment is now a lot less cluttered.

Great tips! I have been in this house nearly 22 years and always regarded it as a stop gap, but now have to to learn to really love it. Maybe it is time for a repaint, after all these years, together with getting some other bits that will bring me joy. Decluttering is a major imperative, but I am feeling better about it at the moment. Somehow, I have been camping here for these years and now need to allow myself to change things. One question, how do you tackle the stair well when it comes to painting? Doing that alone makes me feel nervous.
