An often overlooked "censored" cover is Three Dog Night's "Hard Labor" from 1974.

Actually *not* the censorship I was expecting when I saw that Dookie would be in the list. I was thinking it would be that Ernie from Sesame Street was removed from the back cover somewhere along the way. Anyway Frank, I was out and about the other day wearing my "I still owe money to Columbia House" t-shirt and had quite a few comments on it, it's probably my most reacted to t-shirt in my whole wardrobe. Keep up the great work!

My original Dookie CD has Ernie on the back but I recently picked up the 30th anniversary LP and he is missing. Probably more copywrite issues and / or not wanting Sesame St associated with Green Days music maybe?

Love this series you put out. That Rob zombie cover always seemed to have that retro feel to it..

I agree.... I didn't realize it was actually a vintage image.

I have the Poison Open up and say ahhh album, another album I have that's "pretty bad" is the G'nR's Appetite for Destruction original cover (now that artwork is part of the inside artwork). I think it was out for 5 days before being recalled and the cover with the cross and skulls was made.

also I remember seeing a Lorde album called Solar Power (had to check the name) at my local record store when they were still open. the album had a sticker over a woman's bottom.

On the cover of Rush's Permanent Waves the "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline from the Chicago Tribune is covered up on most of the older copies that I've seen. According to Hugh Syme there were legal threats from the newspaper. They don't like people being reminded of the debacle. I've seen the headline on several older non-US issues and the newer vinyl releases also show it. Edit: I just looked at my Permanent Waves vinyl reissue and Dewey is spelled Dewei. They changed it a bit to avoid problems.

A few more: Lynyrd Skynyrd's Street Survivors (because of the flames) Jackyl - Push Comes To Shove (weird one where they airbrushed out the curled ends of Jesse James Dupree's mustache) Ugly Kid Joe - America's Least Wanted (with the UKJ character as the Statue Of Liberty flipping the bird)

You forgot to mention about the censorship and or removal of the Ernie doll or hand puppet from the back artwork of Green Day's Dookie.

Gotta love an album that has a bit of notoriety!! Makes it that much more special! Cool vid Frank! ⚡️⚡️

poison's flesh and blood cover was censored because it had blood dripping from the tattoo. and not really censored but zombie's astrocreep cover was changed because it originally had the 3m logo next to rob's head. perhaps 3m threatened legal action.

Hey Frank. Well I guess I don't have any controversial albums. I could be wrong in that but knowing of having an album with the music is fine I suppose as well. Except for a cd that recent comes to mind at the moment of The MC5 Kick Out The Jams with MF word at the beginning of that song. And I have the other version on various artists of Heavy Metal if one remembers way back when that double album came out. With the change to "Brothers and Sisters" on Kick Out The Jams. Now I would think that an artist would make more in sales to the record selling well with controversy but then be it probably works out both ways when one is a uncensored and the other censored so someone could have two copies of a record album. Only the uncensored being as more inflated in price.

I’m surprised there was no mention of Spinal Tap’s “Smell The Glove” album. The original cover had a greased, naked woman on all fours with a dog collar around her neck, and a leash and a man’s arm extended out up to here holding on to the leash and pushing a black glove in her face to sniff it. As we all know, it was changed to a plain black cover. A cover that made people ask “How much more black could it be and the answer is none. None more black.”

Scorpions -Love at first sting I bought the album when it came out and loved the cover art (teenage boy then)

Alice Cooper's 1974 album Muscle Of Love was shipped in a brown bag. The picture on the cover had the band dressed as sailors with the buildings looking like (for lack of better words) "mushrooms" (if you get the point). Great video...

There have been some album covers that I had a problem with. To be honest, I thought "The World Needs a Hero" (from MEGADETH) came out better and more artful when they censored it. The original was too generic. VR was ripping himself out of DM. But the censored version was more thoughtful. 🤔 The image was altered so DM was on the floor. 🤔 VR crawled out of what looked like either a coffin or a piano. 🤔 Interesting link between death & music. 🤔 Certainly more artful. 🤔

The weird thing about Walmart is that you couldn’t buy CDs or cassette tapes with swearwords in, but you could buy all the gory ass movies he wanted and any kind of movie with cuss words because they didn’t care about video on the audio

They will, but....then KZread demonetizes the video because it doesn't meet community/advertiser guidelines. And once a video is demonetized, it's dead. KZread stops recommending it, and it goes away. This happened to me with a similar video I did last year... I changed my approach this time, and it passed the communuty standards test, or whatever it's called.

that pretend puritanism in the US is beyond ridiculous, from this nonsense to playboy in black plastic bags, hilarious and stupid and Walmart is the worst one there. One of the many reasons I never set foot into that store, don't like being told what I can and can not buy with my own money.

We still cannot show nudity on albums . Looks like we’re living in the 1950s still . it’s not the 1950s anymore. But The sensors act like if it was still the 1950s . It is 2024 still people acting like nudity is still taboo .

Argh... unfortunately, it does, but I'll lay it out here ... If YT deems a video does not meet community standards, it's demonetized. A demonetized video is not recommended by YT (because there is no money to be made from ads), and no one sees it. A video no one sees is a waste of my time. That's the scoop.
