10 Essential items every koi keeper should own

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

10 items every koi keeper should have in their shed. In this video I go I talk about 10 items that I believe anyone who keeps koi should own. These are things that , as a koi keeper, one day, sooner or later, you will wish you had. Be it when you see your favorite koi flashing, or you see something out of the ordinary and need reassurance that everything is ok.
I go through the 10 items and discuss why and when I believe you will wish you had each one. Some are obvious and simple, others are a little more obscure, but each one could be a life saver at the right time.
These items are also excellent gift ideas for that loved one who keeps koi.
Below is a list of the extra items viewers have suggested, thanks everyone for your feedback 👍
Spare water pump
Backup power supply such as a generator
Thermometer
Spare flexible hose

    Missing some things like a bottle of general medications for parasites like terminate and praziquantel. A spare water pump and a generator. I would have over 5k in dead koi if I didn’t have a generator after our last power outage that lasted 5 days in 90 degree temps.

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Richard, I tend to steer clear of 'general' medications to be honest. I prefer to diagnose an ailment and purchase the correct medication for that condition. As such its impossible for me to keep a bottle of every single one on hand. I also want to buy them fresh as they tend to have a shelf life. I appreciate though that not everyone has a stockist of these products locally available so its not black and white. Good point regarding the generator. I'm in the UK and we don't really have power cuts here but I know some countries do suffer. I've added your suggestions to the list in the description, thanks very much 👍 All the best to you and yours for the holiday period 🍻🎅🍻

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ryan and welcome. Ghost koi are basically the same genetically as koi. They are a cross between common or mirror carp and a koi carp. They tend to grow a bit quicker than true koi due to the recent introduction of the wild carp element. I think of them as a mungrel as opposed to a pedigree dog. They just dont fall in to the varieties that koi come under. Nothing wrong with them at all, treat them exactly the same as koi. All the best mate 🎅🍻👍

    Thanks for another informative video. A few points if I may. I use the NT Labs buffer for the ph but have noticed the sodium bicarbonate at my local koi shop is cheaper...do you think using the NT Labs buffer has any advantages or is it basically the same stuff?. I don't keep a spare air pump as I have a waterfall so I think it is fair to say that it helps to keep a spare air pump unless you have an alternative source such as a waterfall. The final point is that I also use tamodine and have found it excellent and very easy to apply.

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Keith, honestly, I'd use the bicarb. No difference and a fraction of the price. Good point regarding the waterfall. Showers to will give good aeration via a water pump source 👍👍 Tamodine is good stuff. No complaints. • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    Hi Keith, in theory 30 watts should just about be enough for your pond but a lot depends on factors such as orientation, shade etc. I had a 30 watt UV on my little 1000 gallon pond and it was always green so I have upgraded to a 55 watt unit now. If I where you I'd stick with 55 watts to be honest. The EA units have always served me well 🍻

    Dazzle, I don't think your Chloramine comment in relation to Sodium Thiosulphate is factually correct? In the articles I've read, it removes the Chlorine element from Chloramine, leaving only Ammonia (Which your filters if effective should gobble up pretty rapidly) I think it's worth clarifying this with your viewers.

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi mate, thanks for your comment 👍 I've studied chemistry and I know sodium thiosulphate can negate chloramines as you described but there are situations when it wont which are complicated and as such I'd rather just say it doesn't and be safe. I don't want to be responsible for people relying on it based on something I've said and then they hit the rare set of conditions where it isn't effective and their fish die. Its better safe than sorry even though the chances are very slim. Purpose made chemical dechlorinates have extra chemicals added to cover this scenario, they are not just sodium thiosulphate. I hope you understand why and apologies for the confusion/vagueness. Best wishes to you and yours for the Christmas period 🎅🎅🍻🍻

    @@DazzleKoi Hi Dazzle, thanks for the reply, given I live in Central Scotland where Chloramine is routinely used in the water supply, I did a bit of research on the internet, (and have discussed it with a Chemical Engineer friend of mine). Nothing I have read on the internet (including posts and articles by MankySanki) indicates or even hints that there are situations in an aquatic environment where ST would not bind/remove the Chlorine element from Chloramine. Whilst my Chemical Engineering friend was able to cite examples where it wouldn't work, none come even close to being experienced in an aquatic environment. (The chemical composition of the water would be such that Chlorine/Chloramine would be the least of your worries). Can you point me in the direction of the articles/research you read describing the situations where it wouldn't work? It would certainly put my mind at rest. Have a great Christmas/New Year, here's hoping 2021 is a lot more settled than this year.

    Hi mate, I don't have anything by way of scientific papers etc, its just my personal opinion based on degree level chemistry and preference not to make a sweeping statement based on this. If you have evidence that these conditions will never be met in a pond environment then I'm more than happy to accept that. I was thinking only from the perspective of people hearing about ST for the first time and taking my advice to start using it. I didn't even consider the people that use it already. Can you post up a link to a paper confirming there is no issue with relying on ST for chloramine removal? I'm more than happy to put that up for people to make up their own minds.

    @@DazzleKoi OK lets rule out the obvious, Pressure, Temperature and PH, in water none of these in the parameters (even the extreme parameters) found in a Koi pond or Aquarium prevents the ST scavenging the Chlorine from Chloramine, it's a simple aqueous salt reaction. (PH however does dictate whether you are left with ionised or un-ionised Ammonia). The only influence out with this on whether ST can remove Chlorine from Chloramine, must be chemical? There are substances which prevent ST from dissolving if they are in strong enough concentrations (alcohol for example). There are acids that would create toxic gases if combined with ST, again if they were in a strong enough concentration. If any of these chemicals were in your pond, dichlorination would be the least of your worries, and the above would prohibit ST from removing both Chlorine or un-bonding Chloramine in a pond MankySanki is one of the go-to guys for many experienced hobbyists, below is a link to his thoughts on the matter - www.mankysanke.co.uk/html/questions_answered.html#Liquiddechlorinators So out with this what are the conditions you believe will influence ST's effectiveness on Chloramine, am I missing something?
