In today’s world, creating digital CG animation on computers requires a lot of man hours and work. Thankfully, changes made to animations can be done right within the computer. Back in the day, creating animations requires thousands of hand drawings by dedicated animators that were great at their craft. For Disney, they tried to eliminate a lot of this work by reusing animations from other films and drawing over it with new character designs.
Beauty and the Beast was nominated for an Academy Award, but one of the climatic moments in the movie actually featured footage from another Disney classic. Robin Hood is a great re-telling of the classic tale, but the film is filled with scene after scene of stolen animation. Alice in Wonderland featured a unique world of characters, but scenes were pulled directly from Pinocchio and Bambi. The Rescuer’s Down Under was a sequel released more than ten years after the original, but the creators still managed to reuse a lot of the same footage. If the animals in The Jungle Book look familiar, it’s probably because a lot of the wolves are simply repainted Dalmatians. Winnie the Pooh borrows scenes not only from their own movies, but also The Jungle Book. The Sword in the Stone stole from more than five different films including Bambi. The Fox and the Hound is an emotional movie, but some of those scenes were taken from Bambi and The Sword in the Stone. The Princess & The Frog is one of Disney’s newest animations, but it features a copied sequence that may be both an homage to the original and stolen animation. The 101 Dalmatians is one of Disney’s older films, but it still stole small scenes from both Peter Pan and Cinderella.

    1. It's not stealing, it's their own films 2. Disney wasn't always as wealthy as it is now. Back in the day, they had strict budgets, which forced them to take a lot of shortcuts, like recycling frames from earlier movies.

this guy knows nothing about animation, alot of these scenes they "re-used" are drawn from a different angle and are from movies made before we used computer animation, meaning they had to completely redraw the scene from the new angle with the new background, although yes they do reuse character and scene designs but not the scenes them selves, take an animation class before you start shitting on animators who did all this before we had computers to make it easy if you understood how many man hours were put into animating those movies you would completely understand why they would reuse designs to save time and effort and as i said they would still have to draw the entire scene over again but save time on redesigning characters and dance moves

Why reanimate something when superior gestures/movements/sequences that have already gone through all of the animation process are available? Animating a new segment for the sake if it is a ridiculous waste of time. It doesn't matter that they reused some scenes, they worked perfectly in those situations. It's art and art is reused all the time. It just needs to look good, doesn't matter how.

Spencer Whiteway Walt wasn't for cutting corners, but this is not abnormal in animation. In older animation, it is especially common to see cycling, and that practice continued, with it being less common in feature length animated films. Walt was not alive when some of these movies were completed. The last animated film he had overseen to any degree was the Jungle Book. It was released in 67, Walt died in 66.

It's not really stealing footage as such. They may well have had footage of a real person performing certain actions that they animated over, and used the same reference footage for other films. You still have to draw each frame individually - it's not as simple as copy-pasting the footage into the new film!

Another film the Jungle Book used animation from includes is Disney's Goliath II, in general the recycled animation from the 60's to the 80's was no surprise as most of the animators and directors worked on all the projects... Frank and Ollie, Milt Kahl, John Lounsberry, Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman (father of Mowgli, Bruce Reitherman), Bill Peet... if you watch every disney film in a marathon you're 100% likely to see a name that would form Walt's famous "Nine Old Men". This is an exception for Princess and the Frog as many of the old team were either retired or had sadly passed away.

You forgot Aristocats for the Robin Hood one, the one scene of Maid Marian dancing copied Duchess's in her dance scene (Everybody Wants To Be A Cat) and if you looked at the drummer during the Robin Hood's scene, you'll noticed he share similarities with the Siamese Cat from Aristocats. But I am glad I am not the only one who noticed the reused scenes there.

They actually did this as a homage. The animators actually hated doing this for it was more work to find the original drawings to copy. In fact there's interviews that show that they would've loved to draw new things instead of doing this but respected the decisions of Disney to go through with these scene recreations.

I've heard that they didn't really save money or time on borrowing from other films. One of the animators at disney said that it took alot time digging up the drawings from the archives and it had to be altered to suit the film. He said they might as well just make new animations, but the boss at the time insisted on doing it this way.

Disney owns all of these movies. Technically speaking, Disney didn't steal anything because they own the rights to each and every one of these movies. I understand that with Disney being an animation company, most if not all of the character animation would be recycled, if not because of lazy animation artists then Disney did not have the time or budget to redraw the scenes needed by hand or scratch. Every form of art has a form of "plagiarism" in one form or another. This, back in the day, was Disney's.
