KicksRCrack I've done it only once or twice in my day. I hated doing it because the chances of getting a ride at night are slim and none. Last time I did it, I thought to stand under a pole light so I could be seen and maybe recognized. Few minutes later I saw the lights of a car. I stuck my thumb out, and this black hearse slowly drove out of the darkness and right past me.

My friend's dad used to pick up hitchikers very rarely but when he did he has a rule, they must empty their pockets and if they have any bags leave them on the side of the road, if they refuse he drives off. And even if he did pick them up they had to sit in the back of his truck.

kunduo There are some sick murderers out there, but you wouldn't want to kill me. I took basic Judo and I tend to go straight for the eyes or any other orifice in a fight. I'm an eye gouger. If there's an iron in the room on an ironing table I've been known to swing it by its cord until it bludgeons the enemy to death with rapid and fluid swinging.

I was driving home late one night and a girl on the side of the road waved me down. I slowed but didn't stop because I thought she might be a hooker or druggie and I'm not in the habit of picking up hitchhikers at night in the middle of nowhere. But a couple of minutes later I considered the fact that this girl was walking down the road alone at night in the middle of nowhere and that someone bad might come along and pick her up. So I turned the car around and headed back down the road to find her. When I saw her, she was walking with a pretty dangerous looking guy who hadn't been visible earlier. I'm guessing he was hiding in the bushes waiting for his girl to stop someone so they could rob them together, or worse. I continued driving and called the police. I would offer 2 bits of advice, 1, don't pick up hitchhikers, and 2, don't hitchhike. Although, to be honest, I'd be surprised if anyone still hitchhikes in this day and age.

You're not dumb! Perhaps there's a different word for it in your native language or country if it's not the UK or US? But hitchhiking is when a person stands at the side of the road, to catch traveling strangers and 'hitch' a ride with them. Hope that explains it. If not, Google is always pretty helpful with stuff like this!

Not at all, you're allowed to hitch hike as long as its on an entrance ramp or other certain areas according to some state laws. And the only way you're going to get killed is if that driver is hit by somebody else very badly or crashes the car very badly. Yes, people are unpredictable but as long as you use your intuition, then you're safe. Just go with your gut and make eye contact and be as real as possible. If you feel it isn't right, tell them you need to run back to town before heading out and that you'll catch another ride, then thank them and be on your way. You don't HAVE to get in whichever car pulls over. Its called being smart about it. To be even more safe about it, send a friend your location and the plates of the driver

wtf I had a reoccurring dream when I was a kid were the exact same thing in num 9 that happened. I was driving a car, picked up a hitchhiker in a white dress who complained about being cold, so I gave them a blanket and drove to the address they gave me, but when I arrived and turned around they were gone and only the blanket was left, so I knocked on the door of the house and an old haggard women came out and I told them what happened and she started crying saying that was her daughter who died. another variation of this dream I had I arrived at the house and the girl was still in the car, but she refused to exit and asked me to get her mother, confused by this I knocked on the door and said to the same old haggard women that her daughter was in my car to which she responded by crying and saying 'my daughters dead '. there was allot more to the conversations between me and the women but I can't remember what was actually said as it was so long ago that I had these dreams. this is honestly some creepy shit. some of the things were different, for example, the hitchhiker in my dream supposedly died 20 years ago (remember this was when I was a kid so if it was 20 years ago then it's more like 40 years now), I guess it's just some kind of weird coincidence, still creepy asf tho

When I moved from California to Kansas, my father in law told me not to pick up hitchkikers because u never know their intentions. While I was between Colorado and Kansas, I saw a woman with what looked like a baby walking in the mountains. It looked Scarry as hell because it was in the middle of nowhere and it was during the afternoon when it was at least 90 to 100 degrees hot. I felt bad for not stopping but like my dad in law said, its better to feel bad and not pick them up then get abducted and who knows what they may do to your kids. I was driving with my wife and three kids.

What's worse, picking up strangers, or being picked up by strangers?

As a passenger, you're more or less at the mercy of the driver. Especially if the car has power locks. The driver has a much better chance of escape.

Why do all these messed up stories always have to happen in the US? I have almost never heard any of these kind of stories happening in Europe, Africa, South America, Asia or Oceania.
