Be careful with hack #2. I worked for an airline for 23 years, and I know the airline I worked for had an automated system that would cancel the remainder of your itinerary if you missed any flight in your original itinerary. And their justification is that you breached your contract with them by not showing up for your flight. I can't tell you how many angry passengers I have spoken with when they discovered their return trip was canceled from trying to game the system.

What rrally staggers me about airline fares is the breakdown I get after purchasing a ticket. The actually flight is one thrid the cost of taxes and fees that are tacked on. One recent example is a round trip from Derroit to Athens. The total fare was $680, but the actual ticket was only $250. The rest was taxes and fees.

Just be careful when doing an all-airport city search, especially in Europe. There are some airports that low-cost carriers claim are city airports that are very far from the relevant city, and the connections are often expensive. For example Paris-Beauvais (BVA) is 85 km from Paris.

An additional concern with hack #2 is when the airlines change the stopover airport due to their scheduling and cancellation issues. For example, a flight from El Paso to Syracuse with stopover in Newark gets changed to DC. I have had the stopover airports changed on me several times by different airlines and different routes. (I was not trying to get off at the stopover city, so it wasn't a problem for me but would be for the hack users.)

When I was flying weekly I used to knit 3 roundtrip tickets around one another in the opposite directions. So I would book a rt LGA-RSW-LGA and a separate RSW-EWR-RSW and a FLL-LGA-LGA and this was never questioned. Of course I did have to keep a spreadsheet on where my car was in Florida and once goofed and to rent a $14 Avis and drive from West Palm to Ft Lauderdale! But it saved a fortune and was challenging as well.

Two tips for frequent flyer programs: 1) If you have an address outside of the carrier's country (U.S. address for Air France), the miles to attain status levels is easier, and you'll get more miles per flight as you move up in status. 2) International flights give more miles. I used to fly Paris-Geneva (a short flight) twice a week, and I really piled on the miles.

Ended up on Spirit for $415, and was able to get a nonstop flight. (Spirit isn’t so bad, folks. I've been watching prices for about 8 months for a trip we just returned from to Orlando. We ended up driving instead of flying but the prices were actually best about a week before we went. Prices ranged around $300 round trip for months leading up to our trip and dropped to about $100 for a few days about a week and a half prior. Then gradually went back up. Thankful we chose to drive as a flight we would have likely booked ended up being canceled and 9 people we know had to rent a car to drive back to an airport 2 and a half hours in the opposite direction from home to Orlando where they left their cars. We beat them home by about 12 hours.

Mix and Match airlines works *if* you know the connector airport REALLY WELL. Airlines are usually in different terminals, so it is often not so easy to "just" walk to the next departure gate. *cough Salt Lake City* *glares at Philly* (Keep in mind as well: arrivals sometimes run late, so connections on another airline can get too tight.) Do your homework and be careful to allow way more than plenty of time between flights if you attempt this!!!

My pet peeve is when airports don't let you get from any one gate to any other gate while staying inside the secure area. Going through TSA once is enough (even pre check). Some major airports (LAX, SFO, MCO, etc) will make you go out of security and back in depending on which terminals you transfer to. That's way outdated these days! IAH (Houston Intercontinental) allows you access all over the huge airport once you pass through TSA and that's a big help for me because if I can't get on one airline flight I can hop over to another airline and try that one and do it relatively quickly. Others (like SLC and ATL) don't make you go through security again but they're a pain to change terminals.

As many folks found out during the pandemic, booking through Costco offer zero customer service. So many folks were left stranded and without recourse because the terms and conditions are those of Costco and not the vendor or a true TA that books directly with a vendor. Booking through Costco is nowhere near the same a booking with a trusted travel partner. Even if they ultimately go through a 'travel agent' of sorts, there is no service, half is due at booking, and it is non-refundable. That's a big gamble that too many people end up losing, sadly. Hurts my heart whenever someone reaches out for help when this happens and there's nothing we can do.

Thanks Matt. I booked our flight from San Jose, CA. to Kauai in Jan for our trip at the end of July. The tickets have doubled since I got them. Another “hack” for Southwest Airlines is to purchase the early bird option as this allows you to get on the airplane earlier.

I hope you pin my post because this is important. If you do the skiplagged trick and you don't go through to your final destination, do NOT plan your return flight with the same airline. When the airline knows you skiplagged, it often cancels your return flight and you will end up paying last minute for another ticket at full price. If you do skiplag, there is always a risk. You should not tie your frequent flyer # to the flights, and you should return home with a different airline. Serial skiplaggers have been caught and made to go into the next airplane to finish the last leg and some have been sued. You figure out if it's worth the risk. Also, remember when you use gift cards for flights, you are not protected by your credit card's insurance. If you use a gift card and put a portion on a Chase Sapphire, then the entire flight is insured for trip interruption and flight cancellations, and lost luggage. Check to see what your credit card includes. Amex requires the entire trip be booked. But other cards only require a portion of your trip be on the card to be covered.

It’s important to cancel the second leg of the layover flight (tip 2 of the video) because if you have a record of not showing up to your flights, you will face issues booking flights in the future. Also, why take away a seat from someone who may need to actually take that second flight? It’s just the right thing to do for those who may be on the waitlist

My sister just ran into an issue while flying from the US to Denmark. She missed a connecting flight, due to flight delays in the US. She was told by the airlines that her luggage made it and was on said connecting flight. She had book a different flight. Well, once she got to Denmark, her luggage was not there. Since she didn't check in on that last connection, the luggage didn't move after all. She was there for a wedding and had a heck of a time getting her suitcase to her.

@@annthrockmorton1517 you can cancel anytime before the flight lol. the waitlist will wait until flight departs so as long as you do it after you land the first leg and before the second flight finishes boarding, you could be doing somebody a big favor! I thought that was pretty simple to figure out lol..

@The Deal Guy , be very careful with that trick of getting off on the first stop and not continuing, If that is supposed to be around trip ticket it will very likely void out the return flight because they will assume you never continued, on the last leg. It happened to my college children coming home for a holiday. There was nothing that the airline would do. I had to pay again for them to get new tickets at the airport counters because they would not allow boarding. It was a super expensive mistake. in a nutshell, this trick might work without possible issues... if you buy two separate one way tickets ( for a round trip ) with the 'money saving' layover stop ... and yes of course , don't check-in bags!

  • @thedealguy

    @thedealguy

I noticed that issue immediately as this has always been a “thing” with the airlines. The workaround would definitely be to do this with separate one way tickets, although that may arise in higher fares.

Be careful! Skip-lagging is very frowned upon by the airlines. Your checked bags will be at the final destination and, if you booked a round trip, your return flight will be cancelled. Also you risk getting black listed by the airline.

I've done hidden city (#2). I've only done it once when the flight was that much cheaper. Works for one way flights like you said. I also recommend that you pay extra to be in a better boarding group so you don't run the risk of having them checking in your luggage :0

@@juliaS_visaHERITAGE When boarding the plane it goes in the order of boardering groups... A -> B -> C... A boards first, then B, then C... etc. There are requirements for each group. If you are on the standby group which is typcially the last and they have ran out of space on the plane for some reason or need to balance weight they can ask you to check in your baggage (without extra cost) to the bottom of the plane instead of top. If that is the case you will have to stay on the entire flight to get you bag back.
