so unfortunately the combo that my viewers came up with involving kruphix/horizon stone with snowfall doesn't work. "If unused mana in your mana pool has any restrictions or riders associated with it (for example, if it was produced by Cavern of Souls), those restrictions or riders will remain associated with that mana when it becomes colorless." i really like where your head's at though.

I would like to inform you that knowing Snowfall exists has inspired a custom commander that cares about mana that's not spent on casting spells or activating abilities (ie. cumulative upkeep, rhystic/smothering effects etc.).
@LowinBayrod

Doubling Cube, a card already good in Kruphix, don't copy any restrictions on the mana, so maybe ?

what if you bounce or sac snowfall after filling up your mana pool?
@tinygriffin467

@@TheForbiddenDance I think the restriction is associated with the mana produced, so even if snowfall isn’t around anymore, the clause is still attached to the mana, unfortunately

@@tinygriffin467 From Doubling Cube's page on Gatherer: Any restrictions on the mana in your mana pool aren’t copied. For example, if you have ColorlessWhiteWhiteBlack with no restrictions on it in your mana pool and BlueBlueBlue that can be used only to cast artifact spells, you’ll end up with ColorlessColorlessWhiteWhiteWhiteWhiteBlackBlack, BlueBlueBlue that can be used only to cast artifact spells, and BlueBlueBlue that can be used for anything.

Yes, I can see it being great. I generally steer away from cards that rely on my commander to be playable. I would never want to see this in my opening hand. UUURRR is a pain.
Smoke is beyond awesome. Ilharg and the new Purphoros both love them some Smoke.
King's Assassin and fatal blow are old black removal spells that can target black creatures but both are conditional (for tapped creatures and creatures that have received damage respectively). I think Betrayal of the Flesh (from Mirrodin, 2003) is the earliest mono black card that can unconditionally kill any creature.
I started with The Dark and then went on a long hiatus after Scourge. These old cards are def in my wheelhouse for EDH. Thanks!
Soldevi Adnate is amazing in my Chainer, Dementia Master deck. In that deck mana is quite important and creatures going to the graveyard too. An awesome thing is that it can target itself too if you need that quick ramp - 5 mana on turn 3 is nice sometimes.
The Professor mentioned Soul Barrier in a recent video too.
To be honest I was looking for a cumulative upkeep deck for fun, that snowy enchantment is amazing!

Ice Age for me, so when I see that snowflake symbol I get the warm fuzzies.
Love this series. Watching all the back episodes now.
I know this vid is old, but if you never got an answer... There were two stages to go from the old Terror style removal spells to the modern philosophy, that happened in a fairly short period of time. First off, we got Doom Blade and Go for the Throat. These allowed regeneration to be used as an answer. The second stage was Murder, which didn't have any targeting restrictions. The ravenous chupacabra was not long after Murder, but Murder was the first card to just say "Destroy target creature" with no frills and no drawbacks. However... Devour in Shadow was the first card that I was aware of that didn't have any targeting restrictions on it's "Destroy target creature" line. But I started in Mirrodin, and that was in Fifth Dawn, part of the same block.
Great stuff dude. Keep up the good work
I remember some people not liking the rarity indicators at first. The stated reason was that the card’s effect should matter in trades and deckbuilding. But of course the real reason was to swindle new players into trading their dual lands for craw wurms.
song of serenity in an estrid deck is very nice, with chainveil and some spark doule shenanegans you can very quickly lock the board down
So happy to see somebody else uses soldevi adnate. Such a good card.
These are some absolute bangers in my opinion. I'm always surprised when I look up the price of most of these cards and they're less than a dollar. Some really good finds!
Nice video! Theft of dreams, Culling the Weak, and Brand of Ill Omen are some cards to send you down the rabbit hole 😉
Soldevi Adendate is one of my favorite cards in Grenzo, Dungeon Warden because the things you sac are often 4+ mana and you need two for Grenzos ability so each turn after your etb served it's purpose, you can reroll the Grenzo lottery.
5:25 The earliest card I know of where that was the case is Devour in Shadow. It's an instant from Fifth Dawn for BB and just straight up destroys target creature. You lose life equal to its toughness in exchange, but it's still a very underrated card in my opinion.

@@edhdeckbuilding Probably not so much of a Commander card outside of MonoBlack decks, but definitely something I love for kitchen table Magic.
I find it really funny that you brought up Soltari, Dauthi, and Thalakos. A few days ago and prior to watching this, I was looking for an Esper-colored commander to use them and unblockability to it's best.
@edhdeckbuilding

i'd go with partners. i had a tymna and silas deck the focused on that strategy. you could also throw ninjas in the deck for added fun.
If you like shadow I added Dauthi Embrace to many decks to give shadow. I run it in things like Yidris.
Just found your videos! You’re doing a great job man, I’m learning a ton

thank you and enjoy.
actually with snake pit its probably beautiful with Chatter fang since it throws in a squirrel when you make the snake token
Songs of the Damned would be great with any commander that has you milling card right out of the gate. I would hesitate to put it in anything else because it can really be a bummer early game with no creatures in the yard yet. Also, wow Soul Barrier. Mono blue burn. I also play against a Karametra deck regularly and this indeed would hose him pretty good! You are absolutely right about mono color decks feeling like they have more room. All of my tri-color decks are so tight simply because you are only running the best of the best.
That’s great news about the card lists.
So, as I remember it, cheap black spot removal was all non-black, non-artifact for a long time. In some sets black would get removal that killed anything other than a relevant creature type in that block i.e. Rend Flesh, Chill to the Bone, Eyeblight's Ending, Go for the Throat. For a long time those were staples in mono-black EDH. You'd even see people play narrow stuff like Smother. The first cheap universal black kill spell that I remember was Murder.
Soldevi Adnate honestly reads like one of those really expensive old cards
You totally got me with Snowfall. As I was listening (wasn't watching) I was thinking, dang, why haven't I heard of this.. then the shoe dropped. .. Cumulative upkeep? Really? Anyways, great video as usual, definitely jamming Soltari Visionary and Song of Serenity into some of my decks (my playgroup adores Enchantress decks -.-)
Soltari Visionary is a hidden gem, I snagged it off a friend’s old stash

All soltari are pretty decent
Great list, but for shadow, I'd recommend Dauthi Embrace. Turn any creature you have into relative unblockable seems pretty good XD
Smoke is great in Ruric Thar
Soul barrier works awesome in my bounce deck. Bounce there stuff, get through for damage, then they get hurt rebuilding there board. So sweet.
Good video! Thanks!
I put sigil in my nekusar deck. Basically means wheels are creature board wipes!
I have Sigil of Sleep in my mono-blue pinger deck. :)
Smoke could be a bomb in a krenko deck. As long as you have something to give them haste, untap krenko and attack each turn with your fresh goblins!
What a coincidence that you'd mention sigil of sleep AND soltari visionary in the same video days after I started brewing my Toggo/Ishai noncombat damage triggers deck. I'm excited to put sigil onto a firebrand archer :)

Goblin Grenade is fun for that kind of deck, especially with stuff like helm of the host and white on ojutai gives you access to anointed procession if you're token heavy(think purphoros.)Whirlwind of thought should be an auto-include if you're going for spellslinger.
On a similar vein to Skyshroud War Beast I like Wilderness Elemental in gruul, it counts all of your opponents' nonbasic lands and I've had it get HUGE in Xenagos
I use Slaughter in my Killian, Ink Duelist deck. 2 mana instead of 4 makes it really worth it!
These are great choices. I love Slaughter.
Lol I have nearly all of these in various decks... Except sigil of sleep and soul barrier might have to pick them up for my Hakim the lore weaver deck. :D
As for black cards that killed black creatures. Chill to the bone from Coldsnap comes to mind. It killed nonsnow creatures. And between Slaughter and chupacabra there were others too: Avatar of Woe, Assassinate, Big game hunter, Bone Splinter, etc.
Lol I'm glad you are getting some kind of affiliate. I've been buying a lot of these cards but feeling bad that you're not getting a kick back out of it.
Horseshoe crab, hermetic study, sigil of sleep .... hilarity ensued
I do like soltari visionary. White likes getting in for damage, and dealing with enchantments while being unblockable... Yes please.
Dunno if this was already mentioned, but snowfall can be used with doubling cube to make some huge mana
When they started the colored symbols i felt like it was so painting by numbers but now days there are so many cards, I'm happy to paint by numbers
I like Smoke effects in certain style of builds, like Mizzix, where I'm not invested in the combat step. My #1 pet card in same vein is Meekstone. It requires buildaround, but works in (Doran, Mizzix, Superfriends) just alot of applications. Super underrated. Yes I know it is a stax effect, not all playgroups cup of tea. Will consider over propaganda and ghostly prison effects at times. Not as political though, as it doesn't provide the choice.
Slaughter is definitely going in my Greven deck
Playing three of those cards in decks already and debated on adding two of the others. I must be doing something right!
@edhdeckbuilding
3 жыл бұрын
i also must be doing something right.
I'm in the process of trying to build a Greven, Predator Captain deck and Slaughter will fight right in with the Buyback. Destory an opponent's creature, get the spell back, and pump up Greven by +4/+0
I must be one of the few who plays shadow in commander I guess. Nether Traitor is a hell of a card.
So didn't scroll through to see if someone suggested this, but Snowfall would be great in Chisei, Heart of the Ocean since that deck (if I was gonna make it at least... or you could! that'd be way easier) runs lots of cumulative upkeep cards for Chisei to eat the time counters off
I play Soldevi Adnate in my Garna the Bloodflame Deck. Garna gives it haste and needs to die at instant speed im order to do her thing. Soldevi Adnate makes Garna basically free and let's you rebuild your board immediately. Genuinely one of the best cards in the deck.
You got me on Snowfall not gonna lie XD
Your deck building is so creative I'd love to see you make a hug deck
I ran slaughter in my vona deck. It worked out well with font of agonies. Downside is black is very popular, and it almost never can target comanders due to that (in my playgroup anyway). Song of serenity would be great in an Estrid deck i bet. Turns the commander into a pacifism machine
Smoke is great in my Blim deck.
I really wish Raging River was cheaper. That’s a super useful Red card! Smoke is also pretty solid.
I tend to browse the 10 cent bins for my local shop from time to time and I found a Sleep Sigil. Honestly, been looking for a way to use it!

That card is a blast for nay creature that pinga your opponents constantly: Brallin, Nekusar, Khederket Parasite, Harsh mentor any creature that deals dmg to an opponent whenever he does smt can be a bomb with this :)
If you're looking to build "Blue cumulative upkeep tribal," Snowfall is the most initially obvious choice, but Eon Hub ends up being more interesting a lot of the time.

solemnity also solves the problem alot easier.
Love your videos, I feel like we play a bunch of the same old janky cards I started around legions and onslaught, been catching up on some of your videos I missed, I don't know if you have a Twitter or dragon fact some of the cars you talked about in this video and a few others are in a mono black deck of mine that you probably like cuz it's a bunch of black Jake especially some really corner case OG cards
I run smoke in heartless hidestugu its great
Soul Barrier is one of my favorite hatebear cards I run in my Alela deck.
cumulative upkeep tribal would be hilarious
I love Smoke. I run it in Zedruu and just give it to someone else. I only have like 7 creatures in there, one being Medomai the Ageless
Sigil of Sleep is also nuts in Nekusar
For black cards that destroy any color creature, you have Swat from Urza's Legacy and Fatal Blow from Weatherlight
Slaughter is great in my Vilis deck because if I have my commander out then I get to draw 4 cards when I cast it
Sigil of sleep in nekusar the mind razor sounds like fun
Smoke and Soul Barrier look good in the Vadrok deck I’m brewing, going for a stax/restore balance type that I usually don’t play

@@mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299In mono blue you have more Islands to take advantage on the combo. I'm building a Izzet EDH version on that deck. Another good creature to enchant is: zur-taa druid (add mana, damage and Bounce).
I don't play Commander, but Slaughter would be solid in Vilis Broker of Blood. Also Smoke is dope as hell.
Song of serenity seems a good but risky stax piece in estrid, you put a mask on an opponent creature and it can't attack or block. If somebody destroys the song or tries to boardwipe the creatures it becomes really bad tho
Sakashima + kedis is gonna love sigil of sleep
Murder was printed in core set 2013 and could hit black creatures too
I run a Shadow mechanic deck that is stuffed with Soltari and Dauthi creatures, who are the (unblockable of course) delivery package for the equipment in the deck. I built it cos someone once told me (who knew I loved Shadow) that it was crap and unusable in EDH. Challenge accepted! Yep, I've won at FNM with it...😁

This is 100% correct.
The snowfall might be useful with horizon stone not sure tho.
I do use dauthi embrace in some decks lol
How would Snowfall interact with Kruphix? Do you keep that extra mana? If so that sounds nuts
While Snowfall is pretty bad in general, I could see it maybe in a Jorn, God of Winter deck, or any deck with a decent number of Cumulative Upkeep cards. So maybe there are enough good effects that this might be okay? I'm still building the deck so I can't say yet, but off the top of my head: Balduvian Shaman (if you want to fix color hozers), Blizzard, Breath of Dreams (works well with Shaman), Dreams of the Dead, Elephant Grass, Hibernation's End, Mind Harness, Mystic Remora, Tidal Control, and Wave of Terror. Shadow is really nice. I run a few of the blue shadow creatures in my Edric deck and Soltari Guerillas in my Aurelia Deck. Soul Barrier seems nice for 1v1, but it seems like it wouldn't be super great in group games.

I know it is two months after your comment however as I am just watching the video now ... re:Soul Barrier. The wording on the card is old wording. Although it seems you need to pick one opponent as it states 'target opponent' this has received an errata the Oracle text on it reads: Whenever an opponent casts a creature spell, Soul Barrier deals 2 damage to that player unless they pay 2. (gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=2539) so no ... it is also good in group :)

"No one is playing shadow creatures in commander." That aged well ...

Exodus was kinda just a strong block. They were changing the card design strategy at the time and testing out a lot of new stuff. As a direct result Exodus (and later Urza block) saw a lot of unique and over tuned cards sneak through. It's no real surprise you are finding a lot of cards from Exodus to highlight.
