I need to watch the anime then, but I will say, Leomon's death served a purpose in the story of season one as well as in Digimon Tamers. In season one, it drove Ogremon to start looking for a purpose beyond fighting while in Tamers, his death was more as a driving force for the rest of the story.

Yes! The writers did have some fun with Leomon back then. Because, whip up google, and look up what exactly a "sacrificial lion" in storytelling means. (Anyone too lazy: basically like a "sacrificial lamb", just more meaningful and impactful, often with the express purpose of crating motivation for characters reaching an important turning point.) The writers needed a sacrificial lion character for their story. So... they made... a lion. To sacrifice. It's ingeniously on-the-nose, in a roundabout way, really. =D

I like the original Digimon because of the character and story development! I felt more emotionally attached to the original series than I did with the reboot because the reboot felt so fast paced. I love the reboot because of the battles, mega, and art styles but it didn’t have that emotional impact like the original. In the 1999 version, I literally cried when the Digimon said by to the kids in the parting train.

I liked the addition of everyone getting a mega. It often gets annoying in anime when there are 1 or 2 central characters that get the spotlight and the power ups, leaving the rest of the team to be basically cannon fodder.
@greasy8394

That and the animation are literally the only actual good things on this show. The rest is okay at best and disappointing at worst.
I think the reason the character is lacking is due to the constant change of directors. Im sure you realise there's a clear fluctuation with episode qualities too. I'm not talking about graphics quality. I'm talking about the pacing quality and how fillerish an episode can get. In 1999, the characters were naive children slowly growing into better versions of themselves. Each time a character gets a significant character improvement, it is reflected through their resolve and thus enables evolution of their digimon partners. Thus in a way, they "earned" their upgrades. In 2020 however, the characters were presented as already being the best version of themselves, the evolutions are usually preceded by fillerish fights with minimal character development. The reason why 1999 character clicks is that the viewers of that era can generally connect with the internal issues faced by the digi destinied. On the other hand, 2020 presented the digi destinied like an stereotypical isekai "hero" that got summoned to an alternate world and are grunted with powerful abilities to save that world. The heroes instantly knew their roles and responsibilities which can kinda turn some fights boring without apparent goals other than to level up. In 1999, they digi destinied didn't really discover their "destiny " till around half way through the season. in a way. Adventure 2020 feels like a school holiday trip in the digital world. Whereas 1999 feels like a unexpected journey of self-discovery. In a lot of ways, I feel that 2020 lack of consistency is a by product of covid 19. It would have been alot better if they have just one single director directing the series. As for the episodes, I think it can be divided into two broad categories. Squeezing too much content into a single episode vs too little substance unnecessary episodes. Example of too much things is the episode vs millenniumon. Millenniumon is supposed to be this all powerful uber evil god. But due to pacing. His forms were literally 1 or 2 shot-ted by the MCs within a single episode. That story could flow better if it was divided into 2 to 3 episodes with introduction of the digimon forms and backstory as well as interactions between digi destinied . The way those episodes played are as if they assume all viewers know who millenniumon is supposed to be. Then again , its because we know who he is that we feel that those episodes did not do him justices. On the other hand . The episodes that lacks substance are basically all the episodes with little character development and random plots that serves no real purpose other than being a break from all the fighting. Those episodes could have been better utilized to introduce somemore back stories of certain digimons. For example, rather than showing us blitz greymon. We can have back story that implies the existence of alternate evolutions with legends and history. Basically set up episodes that gives the actual episodes later a better feeling of satisfaction.
@SongShiyu
2 жыл бұрын
With that being said. I still enjoyed 2020 ALOT, particularly the last few episodes where the pacing got a lot better. Really alot better. For the viewers that got bored and give up around episode 40 to 50, I suggest you guys stick around as the pacing quality really get a big upgrade. I think this was a direct result of Japanese fan feed back to the studios since the viewersship was so low during those episodes. The studio knew where to improve from the fan feedback. Which is something Im really thankful of as compared to their previous development during tri. The tri director answered to the critics and fans that he doesn't give a damn Fxxx about what the fans think, and I think that passive aggressiveness is evident within his tri episodes.

@@katomamundara8106 Yeah, it was cool to see Milleniummon in the anime, but I also liked the background lore of Milleniummon in the original.
I am really impressed and had no idea there was a reboot! Digimon was the ultimate guilty pleasure for me as I was 12 years old when Digimon launched on the scene. The OG show did a wonderful job making you feel empathy for the characters and especially for their digimon. However I can confidently say I do not have a desire to revisit this era of TV again, and am happy with what you showed us today to bring closure to the series for me personally. The show targets such a young audience it would not be the same type of show if it catered to my now adult sensibilities and I think that would be disservice to the series. I am excited and hope it brings a new generation of fans and maybe they go back and watch the original and like that as well.
One thing I appreciated the most is seeing moments where Joe, Koshiro and even Takeru have moments of being fierce/strong willed in their big moments in the series compared to how I remember them in the 01 series. I still love watching Koshiro's moment in episode 36 to this day.

Definitely! That was a great episode for his character for sure.
Everytime you hear "Wahoo" from Komondomon puts a smile in my face. I kinda hope the next series will explore biomerge evolution like tamers again for some of those humanoid mega forms( Last Evolution kinda missed the opportunity with the Kizuna forms, what stronger bonds could it be other than actually fighting together as one) I really like how 2020 Digidestined actually have more active roles in combat but sometimes them being on the digimon all the time can get a bit ridiculous, like how they don't get burned and stuff or suffer from g-force for some fast flying moves lol
Digimon has been a staple of fun shows in my life. My 9 year old loves the '99 digimon show, we binge watch it everytime I am home. He hasn't seen the 2020 reboot because he can't read fast enough to keep up with the story, but once the English dub gets released, you bet we gonna spend days watching it. Love how many mediums this series has gotten, and it allows us to follow the digital world in card games, video games, and with the vital bracelet. Awesome video my dude! Long love the digital world!

This series might struggle to stand on its own as a different timeline, mainly with story, development and pacing. But because i know these characters already, i looked at the reboot as just more adventures. I think that's why I've been very quick to like this reboot because i can take everything that was already established before and just add on nice animations, music, and new ideas instead of repeating things i know to create a complete package for these characters. (especially with characters like taichi, mimi and all the digimon partners) For example, i know koshiro's story with his parents from the original, and them just hinting at it and developing him a different way this time kept it fresh and interesting instead of repeating the story to me again. This came at a cost as a standalone show, but I think it works after considering both series. Hope this made sense lol

Yeah I have started to think like you here. I know a lot of things around the franchise so I was able to appreciate a lot more than some of my friends who have only watched the original adventure. Some niche little things like references to the games and even that the holyangemon design from the original series is not the og design and some many other things. This show is not really good on its own but gives to us veterans still a lot of things to enjoy. Its not all good but when this show entertained me its was 10/10 moments on that regard and I think that if I watch the older series now I could see a lot more points that are worse than this new series.
@johnking7054

With that logic then this series is a echo. Which means the 1st is a must watch to get a complete understanding. Could be a ark where they must travel to the 1st echo (1999) to fix the an original issue before it turns to a spiral time loop.

They did Andromon so dirty here
I feel like Omnimon's design evolves as the series progresses. From what I remember, it starts off looking cartoonish and childlike to something older and knight like
I like how Goddramon was introduced alongside Magnadramon. I used to not like Magnadramon cause Ophanimon existed and to me it makes sense to have Seraphimon with Ophanimon. In this case it feels right to have Patamon and Gatomon have alternate "Holy Dragon" forms. Goddramon feels right as a Patamon alternate Mega and Goddramon and Magnadramon really show their stuff during the Milleniummon fight. Plus like you said before, we get to have our Magnadramon and Ophanimon cake.
Digimon Adventure (2020) was just so much fun. The fights were truly great, some comedy scenes were really funny and best of all, Leomon finally survived against all odds!
Not a bad series but the filler arc between saving Hikari and reaching Farga was too long. Also the series should've given everyone a proper digivolution sequence not just Taichi and Yamato.

The original 1999 story just can't be beat. But, I really enjoyed the 2020 version as well. What I really liked was the fact that Joe(who was my least favorite in the 1999 version) made episode 60(The Vikemon debut) made me like Joe so much more than the 1999 story. I still love episode 60 to this day. And Mimi, she's my favorite from this reboot in 2020 by far.

Lots of love to all those people who have watched both the 1999 and 2020 series
My favorite change was how the kids slowly encountered each other over a series of episodes and how different branches of evolution were showcased. The difference between this season's animation and 1999 is that 1999 was pretty consistent with how things were animated. This series has low lows and pretty good highs animation-wise, but I wouldn't say it's quite movie level.

Oh yeah, we never did explore the various Digivolution branches, did we? If I recall correctly, the only one we saw was Greymon becoming SkullGreymon because Tai was pushing him too hard. I always called that a "Dark Digivolution", but we never saw anything like that ever again.
My favorite thing is that Leomon survives the entire show. I always felt like they just brought Leomon back only to kill him off episodes later. I felt like that’s all he was and that made me so sad because I loved Leomon he was kind and gentle. I was like why Bandai why would you constantly kill Leomon off.
I freaked out during the last episode where they showed Leomon and it hit me right then that they didn't kill him. That scene was clearly to show off like, "hey fans... we didn't kill him ; )"
I started 2020 with the same as most the “wtf Omegamon already?!” Ended up loving the series. Honestly my favorite moment & someone can correct me if I am wrong but I am 98% sure that when Jijimon shows up they used the music from the Digimon World video game which is one of my personal favorite games of all time & it made me so happy
#1 okay you got me with that curveball I thought it was gonna be like about the lore change or something completely different But nope you’re completely right about that! 🤣😂
Omegamon alter-s appearance as the final payoff for all the alternate forms was so badass
I feel like the Digimon brainrot will not let me go anytime soon and you know what I'm fine with it. ANYWAY. Great video here! I'm glad you mentionned the visuals, because as someone who works (or rather is starting to) in animation, and especially color/work and visual developpment, I was pleasantly surprised by the new serie. I really appreciate the way they kept the original design proportion wise but updated the clothes (and unpopular opinion there but I really like the new clothes better, I think they make more "sense" for kids). The background aren't watercolors anymore but they kept the little white dots, and graphical "bug" in everything, so it still felt "familiar". There were also some very noticeable color storytelling in some episode which I really didn't expect and I was really, really pleased by that. If you pay attention, the lines of the character isn't purely smooth, it's a bit sketchy/transparent, and it really gives a softer look. It's all details like that that makes me feel like there were a lot of care and thoughts. It's interesting that you point it might be the addition of megas for everyone who contributed to the plot /character developement suffering. I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense. I personally wondered if it was also because of the overall tendancy in kids shows recently to be a bit more "regulated"? As in to be careful with what children watch. But then again you get ep 24 of the reboot which would have given me nightmare if I was kid so yeah that doesnt add up. As for the Taichi's focus, it didn't bother me that much as he was my favorite character in the OG, and the opening already made it pretty clear. I understand the frustration though. It's also a shame that they didn't push his character as far as in the OG where we saw his flaws and him overcoming his fears. His reboot version is much more calm and collected which can make him look a bit too perfect sometimes. However I really loved how caring and considerate of others he was in this version. Another change I found pretty big personally was the handling of Crests. I think it's hard for us OG kids to judge that change since we knew from the beginning what each crest meant. It's interesting that this version of the reboot went down a more "Show don't tell" route for the crest. However it maybe would have been benefited from a confirmation of their meaning at some point? I don't really know. Lastly, it's maybe more of detail but I liked the Reboot version of dark Digivolution, with the foreshadowing of Mugendramon chomping down on greymon during Metalgreymon's digivolution. I think the whole ep 24 is brilliant tbh. I'm just a bit disappointed there weren't "consequences" over Agumon and Tai after as they both forgot, because the concept of your power going corrupt out of hatred and rage for your ennemy was interesting. Which makes me think now that I write this that i might relate to this whole "negativity" Negamon was feeding itself from. I'm very sorry for this long comment lmao I coud keep going but I think it's best for everyone if I stop here. I'll go back to work now. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Leomon survives. I lost it. 🤣not what I was excepting for the 1 one slot. Was expecting Omnimon alter S
I see what you did there with the mega pic, you used a fan edit for Tri swapping Holydramon for Ophanimon. For me I really liked seeing all these obscure or forgotten digimon or stuff relating to digimon. I also liked the New digimon we got, like DoneDevimon, Niddhogmon, Negamon and it's evolutions.
Yeah, the animation quality really went up. Though I can honestly say that the worst change, outside of the heavy focus on Taichi, is that the pacing is set to 11, and then they decide "Nah, we can go faster!" Hands down though, the Angemon and Devimon Arc/Explaination was the best part of the series.
To start, great list. I like that you mention Tai, not because I hated it, but because these lists are so often only the "good" things so seeing controversial/bad changes is good. I think my favorite change for the whole series is what they did with Mimi. I HATED Mimi in 1999/02. She was just a spoiled brat who somehow changed enough to earn her crest, but it never felt really earned imo. 2020 Mimi is fucking excellent and shocked me by how much I cared about her story from the start. The Guardromon/Andromon/Lilymon episode was beautiful in it's animation and storytelling. Golemon and his crew's episode was great in adding depth to Mimi. Panchomon was hilarious. And Rosemon was a great way to show her getting a bit more humility and working together with Palmon to achieve it. Tl:dr Mimi 2020 is the best change, bar none, to me.

Great job with the video! I think my favorite part about the reboot are the digivolutions. I love how everyone gets a Mega in this installment Tai and Matt still gets the lion’s share in that regard but nowhere near as much, making them feel less left out especially with my next point. I also like how they utilize the concept of alternate digivolutions. It’s cool that TK, Kari, and even Mimi got some. Overall, the reboot isn’t perfect. It does have problems in regards to its plot and the characters are far more developed in the original, so I have to say that I prefer the original in the end since it’s feels timeless imo but I still think there’s enjoyment that can be had in it. I remembered being hyped seeing Wargreymon for the first time in the original and it's still the same with the reboot and Mimi has some really fun episodes. Also, justice for Leomon.
Digimon blew my mind as a kid. I need to see this new version
Another thing digimon 2020 has is that the theme of the series. Though they may not spend a lot of time talking about this, but the teme is different from the previous digimon series which is more on family. @@thedigiknow i watched it my point was i wish he started out in that form not changed in to it for a few seconds
I have to say this list was fantastic! The #1 will definitely get you because you know it's true, you just don't think about it. Also i'm a HUGE Tai fan but the change that made for Tai always popping up out of nowhere to "help" the other digidestined was super annoying. The alternate evolutions were FANTASTIC! It showed the diversity that true Digimon lovers will worship! Lastly, Alternate Omnimon was the icing on the CAKE!!!! Couldn't believe that actually happened!

Especially the digivolutions!
Initally when i saw Digimon 2020 i though it was just a remake. I was surprise that was not the case. Glad to see many twists and turns. Totally different from 1999 digimon
ngl I was kind of expecting Leomon to keel over from some kind of a heart attack all throughout the final episode XD
I am a sucker for the fight music. You can tell that alot of time was placed on getting the right music for the 2020 Reboot. Especially the instrumental Breaking the Chain in the last two episodes.
Bruh. Just when I finally thought I’ve caught up with Digimon by rewatching Digimon Adventure Series, Movies, Tamers and Frontiers last year. And then I got news that The OG got a reboot 3 years ago… Not that I’m complaining tho, but now it explains why there’s a lot of Digimon Model kits. I thought it’s only because of the Movie. xD
Joe was my favorite growing up, and I’m happy that he’s the leader in this one
Leomon not dying was a huge surprise. I was very sad when Andromon died though…
To back up a couple of your changes For your number 9: This is what got me into Digimon 2020 to begin with, because for one compared to back then, we now have a huge pool of different Digimon to work with and to incorporate into the story via a lot of different lore. What got me interested is me wanting to see how they experiment with the many new Digimon in the franchise. This they delivered well. My most liked Easter Egg was the induction of SkullKnightmon and where they made it to where it can straight evolve to Darkknightmon since there is no DigiXros in this Digital World. For your number 7: Slide Evolution was a concept that was introduced in Frontier switching between warrior and beast evolution. Takeru and Patamon can switch between evolving to Angemon when it's mainly fighting difficult opponents and evolving to Pegasmon when it's speed and distance that is needed. this series utilized the concept of diverging evolution lines for Digimon where they evolve depending on environmental factors like the evolution to BlitzGreymon or when certain conditions are met like with Cresgarurumon. For your number 6: This series basically made Devimon into a major character and was painted as an antagonist that was not purely evil but was manipulated by a greater one. For your number 5: Yeah this is what made this series shine at its' brightest, you can't beat the fight between Greymon and Ogremon, the fight scenes with Pegasmon, and you definitely can't downplay the proper fight between Wargreymon and Mugendramon. For your number 2: I can agree they actually gave Omegamon story importance and that is probably another if not the best thing the series has done and how it's possible to begin with was explained. For your number 1: Although yeah Leomon lived but he pretty much barely shows up much in the series. On the other hand, Leomon being alive for the entire series can also be another way of saying how the formula for Digimon is going to change just like how they are experimenting with newer Digimon by the day, they are going to change how they write the story. My personal add-on: This can be contested very heavily but the Chosen all achieving their megas differently based on what their crests represent and not all of them involve fighting enemy digimon or at least not all of them are severe life and death situations where they are the ones in danger but rather it's a case of it may not be them but others they are looking after. Yamato and Gabumon's for example achieved their Mega while they were risking their lives to save a Digimon from committing suicide. Sora and Piyomon achieved their Mega after reconciling with each other while fighting against nature itself.
Ngl they pulled out omnimon in the second episode and I dropped it so fast lmao. Maybe I'll go back and give it a chance after watching this/reading the comments.
I didn't know they change things I only watch a couple of episodes for nostalgia and dropped it Imma be watching all of it! It's the weekend! I feel like a kid again, i can't wait to get off work and binge everything.
Great video
What i like is every digimon who evolve to mega evolution have fighting scene w good animations graphic, not only just shoot their lase beam etc like old movie/series
I think my personal favourite points was how the actions in the digital world had real world consequences. They weren't two seperate worlds....
The original ending made me cry so hard. With the cactus-mon and the cowgirl hat.
Omnimon being in the second episode was a good call. Everyone knew he was coming, so by showing him early they got fans curious about the ending.

agreed, thanks for this take! i have seen so many people saying it was "rushing things" but like...we all knew it was coming and it gave the kids an ideal to strive towards

No, that was a terrible call. It made every threat after that pointless, because we knew they had OMEGAmon in the chamber.

@@DmonHiro well we all knew omnimon could appear in any hopeless situation anyways, showing him early made the future threats more interesting as it means omnimon might not be enough by the end of the season.
Everyone getting their own megas and the relevance of Omnimon were my favorite changes.
Finally the mega forms of other chosen children's digimons showed up in 2020 unlike in the first one.
When I think of it, maybe the Digimon Adventure, Monster Rancher and Pokemon trinity got me into anime as a kid. They were the first media to show me that you can have three concepts that share core themes with each having its own take and animation style to distinguish it. I think that made me want more and was my gateway to more potent titles like Bible Black.
you forgot another one. the size of mega digimon in this series is truly mega. i remember matt and tie were riding on metalgarurumon's and wargreymon back like he was a horse. but now, they're a freakin skyscraper
Sorry I didn't watch more than a minute of your video, but I didn't know this reboot existed. I'll come back to this after a good binge session.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the ease of evolution In the 1999 version, the evolution was hard for the digimons till they got enough experience. You also didn't mention the crests
Found this video thanks to the algorithm Honestly this Digimon Season, much like multiple past seasons haven't really been for me - I've simply grown past Digimon But I genuinely feel that this existing is great - the older audience who grew up watching the original Adventure and 02 got their closure with Last Evolution Kizuna, and Digimon Adventure Psi is a great new reboot geared towards the new younger audience Plus, it's not like older Digimon fans aren't eating well other than Last Evolution Kizuna, we're finally getting Digimon Survive to release this July
tbh i was so sad with the lack of characters development and the over focus on taichi that i didn't even finish watching it. the reason why i fell in love with digimon as a kid was exactly bc of the characters and their touching, relatable and sooo well written stories, with all of them with a moment to shine. i even have the crests tattooed in my leg, that's how much i love it lol. this was kept in tri, so when i started watching the reboot i was excited to see it again. i expected a modern twist of course, but when it turned out to the character development to be completely torn apart, with taichi ultimately resolving pretty much every problem with a snap of fingers i got extremely frustrated. it was a missed chance to make an epic reboot.

yeah I kind of start to wonder whether anyone remembers the OG team's unique stories, their relatable (sometimes tragic) backstories, etc., and wonder whether they meant as much to others as they did to 7 yr old me back then. Like okay the battle scenes are way better now, but that's not what interested me in the beginning anyway.

the best part is Omegamon doesn't only have two moves (garuru canon and grey sword)

Yeah!
I disagree about so many mega Digivolution taking away from the story what took away from the story was that almost 2/3rds of the Episodes were of Tai being front and centre and at the cost of the other children. You are spot on on the animation being better at the cost of the story as the story for the reboot was fairly half-arsed when it comes to character arks and development. I enjoyed the reboot but as far as the story goes it was meh compared to the OG show. The villains also sucked with the exception of Devimon as the rest were basically one-off villains or mindless monsters unlike in 1999.
Number one was perfect👍👍👍
Ive never been so happy to be spoiled that my homie lives till the end.
Digimon Frontier showed us slide evolutions. I was hoping to see that type of animation when they did slide evolve
basically most of them got the GIANT treatment!!!! LMAO wargreymon ate his vitamins LOLS
I just wanted to hear the music from before... I think the past music they put into 1999 show would be amazing here!
I love that they didn’t make Matt & Tai the over protective big brother’s to Tk & Kari. I love digimon for being Digimon even though I say tamers’ final villain was a huge disappointment & that the dub should’ve changed the voices for the evolutions of the main 3
Another interesting change is for Sora, who simultaneously got both more and less screentime in Reboot. Less because she barely had a character arc in reboot unlike Adventure 01, but Reboot really sets up Sora even stronger as Taichi's best friend and tag team partner arguably more-so than Adventure did. And Yamato and Taichi in the meantime honestly barely had a relationship in this version, their arc was wrapped up within the first 3rd of the show.
Me: #1 is gonna be the kids keeping their digimon partners in the human world vs the original goodbye Him: Leomon survives! 😅🤣
3 min in. I'm sold. I will stop where I'm at to keep away from spoilers. I will watch pass the 1st, two episodes this time. I will report back when done.

Cool! Hope you like it :)
7:48 Leomon also died literally 5 minutes into a Digimon movie called Digital Monster X-Evolution and that came out back in 04
I like how the new megas for tai and matt actually fit their previous forms. Like going from cyborg to warrior and werewolf to cyborg always felt off to me.
