There have been many better left-backs. A lot of better ones. Roberto Carlos was super lucky that he played in a team where he didn't have to defend much, because he was an average defender at best. His contributions to the attack weren't great either (he rarely scored free-kicks and his crossing was oftentimes left wanting). And the best left-back of all time was easily Maldini, no question.

+CFC Idk why people believe that. Maldini owned the left-back spot at Milan from when he was 18 until he was about 36-38. When that time came, he was moved to centerback, which prolonged his career. He retired a centerback, but for most of his career, he was a fullback. Research it if you must.

But due to the fact that during his time at Real Madrid the club couldn't win the European Cup the whole generation is mainly forgotten or at least ignored when the club's all time greats are mentioned. In fact that doesn't say much as there is often a very small margin between winning a trophy and getting out of a competition pretty early. Don't forget that all three golden generations (Di Stefano/Puskas 1950s, Los Galacticos 2000s and Ronaldo/Ramos 2010s) beside all their phenomenal skills were often extremely lucky getting past a stage. Also German legends Günter Netzer and Paul Breitner are hardly ever considered Real Madrid legends. Especially Breitner is often included in German "all time dream teams". But during their time in the Spanish capital Real Madrid simply had no success at international stage - like Sanchez, Butragueno and Michel.

Yes, there are indeed many people missing out Hugo Sanchez and if the same answer is appropriate it makes no senso writing the same stuff again and again. Being worldclass at one time is one thing that is difficult enough to achieve. But a historic reputation is in my point of view a different story. Onother example with no connection to Real Madrid: About 40 years ago Zico was often compared to Pele (the "White Pele") He participated at 3 World Cups and during those competitions Brazil only lost one game (1982 vs Italy). Beside that real dramas prevented him and Brazil reaching a World Cup final (1978 obviously cheating, 1986 penalty shootout). Many Brazilian fans consider the 1982 team as their best ever - but that whole generation couldn't win any international trophies and therefore their star player Zico is hardly ever included in any top 10 list of the all time greatest the world has ever seen. Maradona is almost always at the top 3 but mainly due to his contribution to Argentinas 1986 World Cup win. 2-1 vs England in the quarter finals with 2 illegal goals by Maradona: "the hand of god" and before his famous solo there was a foul which was ignored by th referee. For me that clearly shows that in many cases a very small margin decides about the historic reputation of a player. Both were offensive midfielders but Zico had a much higher goal per game ratio than Maradona. According to Socrates Maradona had more talent but Zico was more effective. So in my opinion Zico was at the same level as Maradona. But who is mowadays mentioning Zico when there are discussions about the best players ever????

alfredo di stefano should be no.1. he was the man who made a team who only won 2 laligas in 20 years, win 5 European cups in 5 years. and 8 laliga titles as well. if he signed for bercelona, barca would've won 7 ucls in 7 years with di stefano because they had a better team overall before di stefano. before stefano real was just a normal club after he joined, he changed the whole history of not just real but Barca's as well. if he he signed for us, we would've had at least 15 ucl titles, and real might have had less than 5.
