10 Best Punk Records

Музыка

In this video I discuss the 10 best punk records...or what I consider to be the 10 best punk records anyway! As always, my list/ranking videos are subjective. This list is based on my personal preference. No one is right or wrong.
What punk albums make your top 10 list? Share them in the comments below!
Also, the Jam are one of my favorite bands, but I guess I don’t really consider them punk. their first album is the punkiest I suppose!
I'm Hanna, and thanks for watching! Like my video? Please subscribe and give me a thumbs up!

Nice list! Here's a few more personal favorites of mine you should look into. Misfits - Walk Among Us The Descendants - Milo Goes To College Minor Threat - Out of Step Adolescents - Adolescents(blue album)

Thanks for walking us through your list. I was especially chuffed you included The Saints (a coffee shop, convivence store and apartments now occupy what used to be the studio where they recorded the album in). They're a mixture of Punk, Garage, Blues and Horror, but *Shakes Fear & The Skeleton Gang* are a great Australian band well worth listening too.

Wow. Thank you so much. I love the variety of your pics and the explanation behind each one. I’ve watched a few of these “Top Punk” vinyl videos and this was the first one that didn’t seem picked from a previously composed list. I loved the personal connections to the albums.

Singles Going Steady counts because that was the only way to get those songs if you didn't have all the 45s. Wire's evolution from tight punk band to avant-garde post punk over three albums was unprecedented. And I agree that first Clash album and Rocket to Russia are the right choices

Great to see a fellow Nebraskan with exquisite taste! Those are all great albums. I first heard "Machine Gun Etiquette" as a teen and it blew my tiny little mind. Cool to see The Saints in there as well. Hell, they're all great records! Have you seen the live set Amyl and the Sniffers did for KEXP a while back? They've got it! Today I bought the "Punk Note" reissue of one of the records in my top 10, the first Bad Brains album.

Awesome list Hanna. Happy of course to see Wire and the Ramones on there and glad that you are digging their 80's stuff. Too Tough To Die has become my go-to Ramones album to listen to over the last couple of years, and Brain Drain is super underrated, heck Pleasant Dreams doesn't deserve the hate it gets either. The Gits was a pleasant surprise, and after seeing it I started kicking myself again; I had a chance to buy it two years ago at a shop in Massachusetts, but for some reason thought it was readily available, so put it back. I later discovered it was virtually impossible to find on any format!

I didnt personally know her but lots of my employees at the time did! Devistating loss. I agree with your list most of those records would be on mine too...missing to me is Elvis Costellos Classic This Years Model (just a personal preference) but the Big Deal is nobody ever seems to mention Australia's Radio Birdman/ Radios Appear!! If you havent heard this record I highly recommend getting ahold of it , it is classic and amazing!!

Hey Chuck! Thanks for the kind words. You said you're from Seattle. You still reside there? I was amazed at how many awesome records I was able to pick up in Seattle/Olympia/Tacoma and then down in Portland when I resided in that area briefly a few years ago. Some of my best vinyl pickups ever were at the record shows up there. Truly a honey hole for records! Yeah, Mia's loss was a tough one. She really touched a lot of people. And yep, that last record you mentioned - I just so happened to find a killer copy last weekend at a record show up north! Stay tuned!

Excellent choices and well articulated by you. I just recently discovered The Saints and the song I'm Stranded and it just burnt a hole right through me!! Loved how you ended with Amyl and the Sniffers who are carrying on the energy of punk in their own idiosyncratic, manic way. For me I would have included something by the Stranglers, Ian Dury( Laughter?), The Cramps "Songs the Lord Taught Us", Dr Feelgood, The Bags, any of the three Birthday Party albums with Nick Cave, so many more. It's all a matter of personal taste, there is no definitive, from the Gods on high list. Great review!!

I don’t know how you do it, to be honest. There are so many punk records from each generation, from each year of every decade …phew!! I gravitate toward the obscure like Vacants “Television Viewer”, Ivy Green “S/T” and Nipple Erectors for the 70s pile. You should check out Abi Ooze, M.A.Z.E. Thanks! This was a great list. All those records and bands are worthy of any top 10 list. On my personal list I would have the first Record by the Jam. I know not everyone considers them fully punk but they meant a lot to me at the time. I would also rate the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album ”L.A.M.F” highly; again not considered real punk by all but a great record. Then of course The Richard Hell album you had in the background is wonderful. Anyway I could probably come up with loads of others. The question is also if the Slits made punk music per se? Their album is fabulous too and a great influence. Just to say that was a great era and all those albums are splendid.

My jaw dropped when I saw that Gits vinyl! Their stuff is extremely hard to find. Even their CD'S. Mia was also a very talented painter / artist. She painted all their album covers. 7 Year Bitch put out an album after Mia passed called "Viva Zapata!" which was dedicated to her and the back cover is one of her paintings. I think they were all friends. Hopefully The Gits catalog will be repressed soon. They only did 2 or 3 albums I think. I definitely need to buy more "X" albums! I only own Los Angeles as you well know. Lol. Thanks for the Ramones box review! Sounds like I need to own it. Lol. Loved this video Hanna! ❤✌😁

Great selection, many of them are in my top 10 as well. Damned is definitely one of the greatest and while I might have gone for the debut I really see your point chosing Machine gun etiquette too as it’s right up there. Amazing songs on that LP. Saints were probably more popular in Europe, their albums are fairly easy to find in Sweden although prices has gone up in later years. Buzzcocks run of 45s were really brilliant so I totally understand you chose Singles going steady. A couple I think is missing in your list is The Heartbreakers and Dead Boys. 😉

Hi Hanna, You've got a great top 10 there. Machine Gun Etiquette is for me, when The Damned even touched psychedelia with a few on there, esp I Just Cant Be Happy Today. I love that gigantic boom the drums have in the intro too. . I was right there as it came out, and Love Song was Number 1 on the UK charts. Love Song right through to Melody Lee is sheerly breathtaking, its one hell of a ride. Their cover of MC5's Looking At You is a killer too with Smash It Up to close it out, superb. Wire's Pink Flag i agree and their 2nd and 3rd albums are superb, with 154 one of my fave albums ever. What makes me happy Hanna, was your number 1 choice and love for this album shows what a music intellect you have. Great video, well done.

Anyway, here's my top 10 for you in no particular order: DESCENDENTS Liveage, Minor Threat Full Discography, The Clash London Calling, Rancid ...And out come the wolves, Operation Ivy (S/T?), Bad Brains I Against I, Gorilla Biscuits Start Today, AFI Black Sails in the Sunset, Fugazi Repeater, Ghoti Hook Sumo Surprise. I wish you were able to fell the vibe of NY in 1976 when The Heartbreakers ruled along with early Television, Mink DeVille, Dead Boys and Pere Ubu. Many punkers went to CBGB but Max's had a constant flow of bands they were known enough not to prove themselves at CBGB which was a proving ground for many bands. The best album I heard in 1977 was rattus norvegicus by the stranglers. I was only 14 at the time and the bass and the keyboards were totally awesome. As far as I was concerned at that time the stranglers were classed as a punk band but my honest opinion was they were a great band who could write great tunes. Their follow up album no more heroes was equally superb. They were also the best live band I'd ever seen, and I've been watching the stranglers live from the first time I seen them in 1979 till this year 2022 and they are still a superb live band.

When considering the Clash, I have to say London Calling was one of the two most influential records of any genre in my entire life (John Coltrane's Giant Steps was the other). But when you want PUNK from the Clash, everyone points to the first album, but I think the lesser-known EP Black Market Clash actually roars a lot more forcefully.

  • @jodyvance1554

    @jodyvance1554

Wha...??? I love Black Market Clash, but not much of it is pure punk. It's more reggae/dub inspired stuff mostly. And there's several covers of non-punk songs that aren't even played like punk songs. Stuff by Toots Hibbert and Williams & Mitoo, not to mention a Booker T. & the MGs song. A lotta people consider only their 1st 1-2 albums to be punk records.

The count up from #1 was genius! lol, Short attention spans for the win! Not a weak album on the list. I might debate London Calling over The Clash, but it is not a punk album, and Janie Jones alone means The Clash s/t makes the list. Lots of love for The Damned. Great #1. Nice call on Bodies. A perfect anthem for the last week. I will give the Pistol show a watch. The chatter around it had put me off. You got to see I am A Cliche! I loved it. A great insight into Poly Styrene's life. Love the X-Ray Spex album. Singles Going Steady 100% deserves to be on the list. It transcends your typical compilation. Simply perfect. Wire and The Saints both kind of balked at being lumped in with punk. But both need to be on the list. I am glad to see you giving The Saints so much praise. Being from Australia and not having the punk look seems to have hurt them. As Bob Geldolf said,, "Rock music of the Seventies was changed by three bands -- the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Saints." Music was moving so fast during those years. Pub Rock, Punk, Power Pop, New Wave, Post Punk, etc. But you really nailed the best of first-wave punk. The album list can be challenging as so many threw out a handful of amazing singles and then disappeared. A couple of more recent bands you might like are - Post Pink - their 8-track 13-minute EP I Believe You, OK is great. I saw them open for the Breeders and they carried it all live. Krupoviesa - From Argentina. Their EP Default is great. They cover 4 classic Fall tracks, in Spanish. Maybe pushing the punk categorization a little but worth checking out. And Ghost World is amazing. Thanks for another great video and for giving me somewhere to ramble about wonderful music.

The general public know them as the band that did the cover of 'Eloise.' And Captain Sensible is a comedy novelty act who did 'Happy Talk.' Machine Gun Etiquette, Black Album, and Strawberries are all fantastic albums. Captain Sensible is one of the finest guitarists ever to walk this planet.

Hi Hanna, my list probably would be similar to yours. What sucks is if you didn't buy those records some years ago you'll probably have to pay a lot of money for a punk record nowdays, like I don't have The Saints for example and everytime I look for it price is too high. Other genres as expensive as punk and in high demand are post punk, metal (specially things like trash) and rock en español. I'm always looking for anything I can get my hands on from those 4 genres. So I made a list, not of my top ten punk albums but of something you might not see very often, the top ten punk bands with the best discographies, for me tose are: Damned, Ramones, Bad Religion, Fugazi, Clash, X, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Crass , Green Day and Sleater Kinney. Well, Crass would be an honorable mention lol.

Yep, "chizzick" is right! I was a teenager in London when Punk emerged and Never Mind The Bollocks captures the times perfectly for me. A lot of social strife and the reason I consider Britain's "generation X" to be earlier than the official definition (Britain's lost, angry generation didn't create Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet!). I think the playing on NMTBx is great - a rebellion against the meaningless musicality of British rock at that time (as much as I love Pink Floyd, ELP, etc, rock had become safe and parent-friendly). The lyrics on that album contain so much of the things people from older generations would say at that time. In a way it's similar to the way Monty Python picked up on things people would say in everyday speech in the early 70s like "I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition" and "layabouts" (as captured in their Hell's Grannies skit mocking the way people talked about the youth of the day).

Mick - I can’t thank you enough for writing this. I could take a whole day to respond to all the insightful stuff here. My 8 year old loves a lot of this music and she loves Monty Python. There really is something special about the way early punk absorbs and critiques different accents and as an American I can still *feel* that, even if I don’t get the nuance. And then now, here in Chicago, there are 8 year old kids who are mocking their parents using exaggerated but still pretty accurate Brit accents (especially for kids!) based on Monty and thanks to you I can hear Johnny Rotten in there. And believe me, these kids have Johnny Rotten in them, and have no problem with that.
