What the hell... All these years.. You've been purely taking photos on Auto!? I can't believe you've pulled that through all these years. I'm genuinely shook

I'm not sure if he's saying he shot exclusively on Auto or is telling the viewer not to. Aperture priority (Av, as known on Canon) was the new discovery. It seems like the limits of Auto would be readily apparent. At least they were for me!

I’d like to think he typically shoots in manual mode and ignores all the other options since they don’t allow for adjusting all the settings. Someone that into the technology and gear would not be shooting in auto. Besides the fact that the photos he produces wouldn’t be possible in auto.
*Notes* 1. Pay attetion to the background (frame within frame) 2. Stop shooting in automatic, you're gonna get a messed up F-stop (low f-stop, blurry background, lots of light). AV (=Aperture Priority) mode is suggestable. 3. Don't get your saturation too high. It's okay to get it high if that's your style, but don't overdo it. 4. Shoot in raw for better image quality 5. LENSES. They are freaking important. He talks about it at 4:36, but you gotta get more information about lenses, what he says is obviously not enough! 6. Start with an exposured photo, not an over or under exposured one. You can make it bomb later, using photoshop, no need to ruin the quality. 7. Take a photo in the moment! Not just a boring shitty one. Be patient and alert, waiting for that moment. 8. Be creative with light, shadows and items 9. Don't just take obvious photos. Make them weird, different and find other perspectives. Change positions, have fun. _Find the boush_ 10. Okay you're inspired, don't be a copycat tho. Buy creators' presets, in order to learn the basics when learning an editing program. People's interesting comments 1. "A trick I use for white balance when dealing with people is zooming in to their eyes and using that white to set my white balance. I can then usually tweak it from there slightly if needed. It’s a trick I figured out a long time ago and has worked wonders." 2. "I shoot mostly in Aperture Priority but when getting really creative it means you have to be in greater control of the outcome, so I use Manual. That's really all I had in the film days, manual control only, set your F-Stop and adjust your speed along with manual focus. I still shoot Monochrome Film in classic SLR cameras, so it keeps me in touch with the basics."

Number 2 is a great tip. I've never used AV because I use manual. I like manually changing all of my camera settings to my liking and never use auto. AND YES, SHOOT IN RAW. I've never looked back since I discovered RAW last year. I may not be a great photographer, but I'm glad that I know most of these already just through experience. I do need to get a full frame camera though so that I can use some better lenses. I love buying presets. I bought your first set of presets early this year for that exact reason. I reverse engineer them and learn. I still have a long way to go.
@jalilchaouite

If it's just a matter of lenses, you can already put full frame lenses on an APS-C sensored camera :) (on Canon at least, not sure for other brands). Getting a full frame will often give you slightly sharper images and a smaller depth of field + all the advantages of the specific body you will choose (ISO capability, AF etc.). But as said in the video, it's often the lenses that actually give you the result you're looking for!

I have considered buying EF lens for my camera, but for the price I decided that I should purchase a drone first. haha. It's something I'll have to think about because I don't see myself using my current camera for very long. It's been great, but eventually I'll need to move up.
Going through Post-Secondary for Communication and Media studies and I honestly will look for videos like these all the time to help me better my skills in photography. Thank you so much.
A good list This is giving me flashbacks to the moments spread out over the years when I eventually discovered most of these for myself. Good concise reminders

One of the more useful videos I've seen on beginner / common mistakes with the all-important corrective action. Thank you so much! By the way, I accidentally stumbled on the AV trick this spring myself. I've been in love with that for taking rugby photos for my son's team. Gives that great "action blur" - or whatever it's professionally called - where the subject is crystal clear and the background is movement blurred. Fantastic.
As a beginner photographer and KZread creator I love Sawyers camera videos! He is so talented and it is so cool to gain a little insight from a pro!!

Myers Illes for 15 years😂😂
@jimjam6598
6 жыл бұрын
Myers Illes - Those who shoot on manual all the time purely because they want to seem more proessional are just ignorant. The camera software has been designed and developed for years so the photos come out as good as possible. Shooting on manual just eats away at the time you have to take the picture. I shoot at a professional level and always shoot on auto, I only use manual for astrophotography and long or extremely short exposures.
@jimjam6598
6 жыл бұрын
Myers Illes - It's no "boycotting creative choice for ease", time is always an element in photography and having to repeatedly adjust the settings to get a good picture often closes that window of opportunity. Auto is manual, just with the settings changed by the camera rather than the photographer. It's like saying only amaetures use auto focus.
@rodrigogarzapena3492
6 жыл бұрын
Myers Illes that's the point i wanted to touch too. You cant be a "true artist" if you dont fully control your art. Doesn't mean im against auto options, its ok to let the camera help once i a while, but to not be self conscious enough and not know what your doing in reality is not pro-like person for me. Just knowing how you want your shot and creating it by yourself, being you who's in control of the shot. is quite magical and wonderful. That's why we have to study a lot

I would like to add to this if you shoot in RAW please make sure your editing software has a big enough format for it! I would hope most beginners have photoshop but not all do and if you don’t have the proper software you won’t be able to edit your photos 👍 great video!

I'm so glad you made this! Really opened my eyes about how much editing can help improve a photo. It would be super useful if you could do a tutorial of manual mode. I myself have been using it for around a year now but if I want to refresh on anything I think I may have gotten in to the habit of doing wrong I can never find a video that doesn't make it sound much more complicated than it is. A beginners guide to manual mode is something I've been needing for a while I guess😅

Thank you for changing my mind about presets!! You’ve been such an inspiration to me without me even realising until recently! Over the past couple years I’ve just taking pictures randomly if things anything on my phone and teaching myself how to edit. A couple years later I’ve realised that I want to be a photographer and I’ve recently taken a beginners course in photography learning how to fully use a dslr and I saved and bought my first dslr the canon 750D. And I’m loving it so much! I owe you a massive thank you for inspiring me because my whole life I’ve never had a dream or a goal, I’ve never really felt I had something to work hard for or towards, something to achieve and now at 21, I do and I feel free. Thank you Sawyer! :) Also! I would love love love a video on night photography tips and tricks please? Thank you :)
YES! Thank you, Sawyer. I am loving these camera/photography related videos!
Bro, thank you for saving me 15 years of looking for the AV setting
I am lucky because I was raised by my mom who was a professional (Not big by any means) photographer and she always used auto on her Nikon D40. One day I bought myself an LGV20, which has very good pro settings to practice with, like shutter speed, Kelvin based white balance, manual focus, and ISO. This helped me learn most of the basics before I even bought my camera (Nikon D3500) I can honestly say that there was not a single thing on this list that I didn't know, because I have already spent so much time learning how to use white balance, exposure, RAW (Which the LGV20 can in fact shoot), and various powerful photo editing apps like Lightroom mobile and google snapseed. The number one thing that I would always do was underexpose my pictures because they looked way better when I brought them back and they had more of a dark, gloomy look that I loved. When I say underexpose, I mean like between 3 to 7 entire stops, yet my V20 could still bring them back with a narrow, but stylistic color range.
Thank you for your pointers. Applied a few adjustments you mentioned to my Canon t5i and took a few practice shots of my dog while watching this video and what a difference!!
This video changes the game completely !! Thank you so much 😍🙏🏼 i have always been looking for a video like this

This was so helpful. Going to school for photography and my teacher has taught us to work in Manual and we had to take pictures with a blurry background behind our subject and I couldn't get it right but now knowing I can use AV to get that background is an awesome tool!

Brilliant video, Sawyer! Some excellent tips in here that I’ll definitely take on board for my career as a creator and photographer!
- take photos in automatic - thinks the blurry backround came from more light at low f stops absololute Beginner!
@StephenBoothUK
4 жыл бұрын
Blurry background comes from the reduced depth of field (how far in front and behind the focal point is acceptably in focus) at low f stops. Nothing to do with the amount of light, which is offset by using a faster shutter speed to get the same exposure value anyway. Understanding depth of field is a key factor in many types of photography.
Why not just shoot manual?! That way you have control of aperture, shutter, iso, and white balance.Then you can decide how much blur you want in the background. I know that most people do not want to take the time to know how to do that but it gives you complete creative control.

Really shocked at that at first too, turns out in the comments he says that he was always shooting manual before. Still, surprising it took him fifteen years to wonder what that dial on top of the camera was for... I do think there's a time and a place for Av, though. Firstly, you can see from the other tips that this is really for real beginners, so the Av and Tv modes can be really useful in getting to know the camera. To shoot in all manual straight out of the box is really hard and it means you're going to get a lot of bad pictures at first, whereas you can concentrate your learning on aperture or shutter speed at first using the semi-manual modes and then move on to fully manual once you've seen what sort of shutter speeds and apertures work together: what's nice about the semi-manual is that it still tells you what the other values are, so you can learn which apertures go with which shutter speeds and ISOs in which situations. Secondly, depending on your style of photography and the situation, it can be really useful to not have to worry about all the settings all the time. If you're just wandering around a city for example and need to catch those _instants décisifs_ then setting your camera to aperture or speed priority can be really good: better to not have complete creative control and get the image you wanted in that situation than to have to spend time changing the settings and miss that instant. But that depends a lot on your style, what you're shooting and yeah of course your skill level =)

I've been a beginner for photography from when I was in school and taking pictures on my phone to move to a proper camera and from leaving school to into college learning more into photography I find it really helpful also from this video thank you so much. I hope that my pictures would touch other people in any way they feel I change up a lot of my style I do nature, model and some animal shots. If someone got this far from reading this comment I want to wish you are good day/night wherever you are and keep loving photography 😊
Wow, where have you been all those times. Great to see your videos. Its the 4th one on row and finally decided to subscribe so I can learn and keep learning. Im actually a chef and Photographee and video is a whole new world to me. I found cooking and taking photos are quite similar in many ways. As you can use pre made food from the supermarket and microwave and serve also you can do the same food from start. Guess which one tastes better? Same with photography you can use auto mode, be lazy in terms of composition etc but going extra mile and putting those efforts for perfect moment with right tools and knowledge will always give you better picture. I really liked the no10th reason learning from pro, there is nothing wrong to learn from pro, I watch allot of top chefs and see how the cook the same dish in so many different ways. So excited for the next video as I’ll watch few more after finish writing the comment. Thank you 🙏🏼

Love these tips bro.. it is so true about the presets. I am a photographer aswell and I have always looked at other photographers work what shadows and highlights they used
Excellent vid Sawyer. I'm new and appreciate the tips. Now to get out there and be inspired by life. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family mate. Enjoy!

Ive spent two years developing and enhancing my Lightroom skills and also my style and I will not lie...I think you should start not knowing and practicing until you get it right and then you can use presets because once you know how it all works, you can use presets to only guide you on an area and then you complete the editing process on your style with some cues that help from your favorite creators. Me and Peter McKinnon have a similar editing style so his presets are almost spot on close to how I expect the skin tones which I figured from his presets :)

And lightroom is extremely simple to learn. Compared to photoshop, at least

lilblingking1491 Like seriously....if you have a basic understanding of software and color and use films, and other big photographers like the National Geographic ones or something you can get a basic idea and just learn through trial and error. People just want to rush through things a lot but photography is a passion that requires patience if you want to be shooting images like those NatGeo guys or better.
You just found out about AV mode a couple months ago? Wtf?
Thanks for simplifying something no one cared to explain to make the step most easiest to comprehend🤙👍💯🙏
I got chills when you explained the picture taking of the intensity of a cheetah. I’ve never known how to explain the fun of photography to other people but now I know. :)
