    All the Gordon knives seem like good buys. I bought two of the Gordon 8" survival "Rambo" knives a couple years ago. They were on sale for $5 somehow. Modded them by grinding/cutting out the saw part and adding JB weld to the handle to blade joint to strengthen. They work great for batoning on small logs or split wood for making kindling.

    From a knife nerd’s point of view, those Gordon knives are made of cheap, crummy steel. But sometimes crummy steel is good enough, and if you’re batonning logs with it, edge retention is not going to be your primary concern. Besides, those $5 knives are better than no knife, which you can’t say about many $5 knives.

    I have the original version of the Gordon knife. The blade was longer, it had a serrated edge for the 1/3 closest to the handle, and the texture of the handle was much rougher. Harbor freight often updates designs or changes manufacturers and keeps the same item name so that is most likely what happened here. There is a video a guy on here made about the differences in the two versions. I've been using this knife for a few years, best under $10 knife I've ever bought. Harbor freight often has a sale where they let you buy items under $10 at 30% off. Your list is perfect for that sale.

    3 cr13 steel actually isn't that bad for a knife. Corrosion-resistant, fairly wear resistant, easy to sharpen, retains an edge, not prone to chipping, it's a budget steel but still pretty darn good. I actually bought that knife for an EDC merely for self-defense just because of the price. Out-of-the-box it was pretty darn Sharp but I still used my waterstones and took it up to ten thousand grit and stropped at 0.5 microns that's roughly 49000 grit. It was actually able to take an edge that fine and retain it without an issue. Actually one of the sharpest knives I carry 🤷. I wouldn't go using it for Bushcraft or anything like that but for a utility knife or self-defense this knife will take a scalpel like Edge. I bought one just to check it out but after seeing how well it took that edge and how well it has kept it, I was thoroughly impressed. Next time I go into harbor freight they're going to need to pull stock from the back cuz I'm going to take all they have on the rack. My favorite feature of that knife is the backflip. With a single flip of my index finger it's open and ready. Pretty decent little knife for $10 I actually got mine on sale for 6.99 🤷 I was actually really impressed with that little guy. The fire starters I agree I've also found them easier to light over the premium brands. I'm kind of a survivalist so I pick up cheap things like that whenever I can and pretty much every time I go into harbor freight I don't leave without one of those things I have like 20 of them 🤣. But as far as a Walmart pocket knife that does well try the HART folding utility knife. I'm not sure what steel it is but that is another knife that I was very impressed with on its ability to take and retain an edge. Second sharpest knife that I carry that is not carbon steel. With the same sharpening process, I can cut curves in newspaper with both the hart and the harbor freight. And I use them regularly for household tasks and even cutting apart cardboard for recycling and we all know cardboard is harsh on an edge; yet only ever had to sharpen each one once since the initial.

    I have a decent collection of knives of various kinds and prices. The one I use most often is a bargain bin, under $10, might have been about $6. You can tell the build quality isn't the best (the grinds are visibly inconsistent), but it cuts great, has double studs and back flip (great for we lefties), opens smooth... Yeah, it is everything I need from a knife to sit on my desk and open letters. Which, as a desk bound worker, is what I use a knife for primarily.

    The logical would be to measure the blade from the scales forward, it's a marketing ploy, they've measured the blade before assembly, sneaky advertising but legal, enjoy the vids from Aus 👍🍻😊 Oh & the 8cr is on par with 440s, depending on the temper of the steel, if it's baked right it's great, to many choices these days for neanderthal bone scrapers 😂

    The knife looks like it had a reversible ambidextrous pocket clip. You could have just checked the clip anyways since you can move it.

    I buy a pack of zip ties everytime I drive by a harbor freight. A couple bucks. Thousands of uses. The plastic isn't super ethical but would be good even in a survival/prep kit. I use them for construction.

    I have a Milwaukee little stubby ratcheting multi bit screwdriver, it looks just like the Doyle but has bits stored in handle, you push the bit out of handle with another bit, there is like 8 bits or something

    I like to use those smoked safety glasses when I use the OxyAcetylene torch. Fun fact! 5/16 is about* 8mm. So that stubby ratchet might actually serve to be SUPER functional. Anyway.. looks like I’m off to buy that knife. and have $113.00 of randomness sneak itself into the shopping cart. I can’t leave that place without spending $100 minimum 🤦‍♂️. *5/16 is 7.938mm. So 0.062mm or just 0.002 of an inch off. In the experience of most, it fits. Nice and snug.

    I see that you opened the box with the mx clip. Is that your edc now? I am thinking of either getting a wave or mx clip (they are the same price where I live). Which would you recommend? I am leaning towards the wave because of the oho blades, longer wire cutter (I tend to cut thick soft wires for electrical) and bit driver. I am switching from a Blast wich had the perfect toolset for my need except for maybe a diamond file. But I need the oho blade so these models come to mind.

  • @MrGatya2

    @MrGatya2

    @@maxlvledc To be precise, the wave costs 180$ and the mx clip costs 175$ due to high import taxes on the leatherman. (Charge is also 230$ here) I am surprised by your answer. Would have thought that you would choose the wave. I get that the spirit has a better build quality, but the wave has the bit kit, diamond file, serrated blade and micro driver (these are the things I either use a lot on my Blast or would really like it to have). What it lacks is the awl and chisel (which I don't use) and long reach philips and flathead. It also has the longer wire cutter which for me is the main reason to choose that. I found that the cutter on the skeletool did not satisfy my needs and the spirit seems to have the same size, so I opt to choose the wave. What would be your main points on choosing the spirit? Maybe your reason to choose the spirit would be different than my criterias?
