A few years ago I started watching garden answer for inspiration and over time, learned so much more, like today’s seed tutorial. My absolute favorite gardening channel. I must also comment that it’s been fun watching the transformation of your property, watching your family grow and everyone in my family waits to see Cheddar and Russell, as they are as fun as anything else on Garden Answer’s channel.

What is a perma-culture garden? Just curious. Laura has inspired me too! I’m not a big gardener or anything like that, but prior to watching Laura’s videos, we only had sod in our front yard… not one shrub! Now, I have two big garden beds, they are all equipped with a irrigation system and most neighbors say I have the prettiest yard on the block! It makes me super proud🌻

I discovered gardening during Covid with Laura ❤❤❤ and I have never had as much extra spending cash since hahaha

I grow the champagne hollyhocks and I love it in the morning because the bumblebees are all bedded in them sleeping. So cute!

We grow the champagne hollyhocks in our 7A Willamette Valley Garden too! They get about six feet tall for us and are stunning!

Do you have Japanese Beetles that destroy them? Any suggestions? They eat the leaves to nothing and destroy the flowers! Roses and Hibiscus are also their favorites! So sad!

It cracks me up when you get after the cats. I have that same discussion with mine on an almost daily basis lol!!

When you think you may be planting "way too many" cut flowers - remember the faces of those gentle souls now needing full time care. They loved your flowers Laura, as well as the attention. Play piano and you and your Mum sing hymns. I love Rose's jams because of the jars they use!

I just realized watching this video - it’s been a year. Something similar to this is how I found you last year and it’s been a solid year of GA videos every morning. I am *not* mad about that ☺️ thank you for all the inspiration and the timely reminders of garden tasks (I’m also a zone 6a)

Where I live in S.E. Michigan Black-eyed Susan’s can be quite aggressive and have elbowed out some of my other perennials. So I’ve been pulling it out and giving it to friends who want it for specific problem areas on their land.

What seed companys are these seeds coming from?

I’m amazed how you can keep all that information in your head . I love perennials but my mind turns into a pretzel trying to remember how each one likes to be planted . This year I plan to sow one raised bed full of a few varieties and put row cover on since I don’t have a greenhouse. Thanks for all the information!

@@jgwood10 it kind of depends on the seed. I have several that I am starting now, because they need the temperature fluctuations in order to sprout.

Bring us along for all the rearranging too when the time comes as I love to see organization of the greenhouse videos too.

I AGREE ADDING A PERENNIAL CUT GARDEN IS GOOD IDEA. I HATE CUTTING MY PERENNIAL PLANTS OUT OF GARDEN . MAY DO THE SAME IN MY SMALL SPACE.! YOU HAVE SUCH GREAT SPACES TO TO ALL OF THIS . KEEP US INSPIRED AND YOURSELF THANKS.

I have columbine around the trunk of my tall white spruce and it's loving its life. And around the columbine I have hostas. I love how the columbine pokes up through some of the hosta leaves.

I found myself coveting what I believe was a lavender plant beside you on your workbench, beautiful! Always enjoy seeing Russel and Cheddar. You provide such great information. Thank you for all the advice over the few years I've been watching your channel.. This year my husband helped me make 2 garden boxes for veggies. We also planted a blueberry and raspberry bush. We planted more roses and 2 Rose of Sharon trees. And I have many plants im starting from seed to plant in the garden boxes and flower beds around my yard...

My foxglove missed the seed itself in same area. It’s all over the yard but I love it and deer wouldn’t dare touch. It’s breathtaking early summer to see the blooms. Columbine another reseeder for me, which is not a problem as the hummingbird comes looking for it while waiting for bee balm. Love planting for wildlife. 😊

Just so good to see you starting to do your seeds and you got some really beautiful seeds from some beautiful flowers to grow can't wait to seed how they do. Just so rewarding to plant seeds as you get so much more for just so little.

One caveat on hollyhocks, make sure they are not on an invasive species list for your area, they will drop hundreds of seeds unless cut back before seed pods dry and drop seeds. They are absolutely beautiful and so fun to grow but be careful or they will overtake more space than you give them. Also, I would love to see a project where you start a heritage garden for your area. I am working on a native garden this year, but it would be so fun to see how you would plan and approach that type of project.

Perennials sound like fun!! 🎉 I’ve finally realized we are both in same zone. Climate here in southeastern Ohio is radically different. Lots of rain. Along the Ohio river. Fly, Ohio little town. Foothills of Appalachia n mountains. Marietta Ohio about 30 miles south of us.

I was cleaning up one of my garden beds and found that my yarrow has started to grow. I love the fern like leaves, I don't mistake them for weeds. Here in KY zone 6 we had a deep unexpected freeze and looks like I lost a lot of plants, but I'll just wait and see. Hopefully, my hydrangeas will come back - it's a wait and see. Such sad news that my small local garden center (25 yrs) is moving because some developer has gotten the go ahead to start building a monstrosity complex. 😥

Same here in 7b. My ivy that grows up my chimney for 20 years looks completely dead 😢 waiting to see what survived in my garden too! And my so over these greedy developers!!!their in our city too and just destroying our scenic city with townhomes. The greed is unbelievable.!!!I call them the "Nothing" cause they remind me of the never-ending story and how they destroy the land!!!

I bought a couple of the Summer Pastels Yarrow as 4 inch plants. I planted them in the fall of 2021 and they got huge last summer! I may have to divide one of them this spring. They were excellent for cutting - very long and strong stems.

Love that I'm growing all your flowers (except the eryngium). I have all of these seeds on damp paper towels in the fridge for cold stratification. I had poor germination (except the Foxglove) because I didn't plant when cool. Some just germinated!

Pretty amazing what a little itty bitty seed can create.

You introduced us to swallowtail seeds. Thank you so much they are our new favorite

I did a 24 freezer method for canterberry bell and yarrow and have growth 3 days after they where out… you should try it. Put seeds in paper towel, wet it, put in baggie, freeze for 24 hours, let defrost and warm up…. I potted mine one day after I took them out of the freezer.

Really like the little basket with the seed bags in it.. Maybe from your family's garden centre?

I don’t know if it’s our climate or what but I planted some Camelot foxglove and they bloomed the first year. I planted some in full shade and some in full sun. Full shade did the best. I’m done 8a and I’m so hoping they’ll come back this year. Such beautiful blooms.

Laura you make it look so easy that I just want to go out and do it however it will take me a bit because I need to reorganize the garden I have

I like yarrow because they always flop when they bloom so I cut the flower stalks, make arrangements out of them and they always rebloom on shorter stems (that don’t flop) in early autumn. 2x the flowers! Just cut them before they start to go to seed. I don’t find that they bloom all season. The flowers go brown and ugly pretty early and need to be cut back like daisies or they’re an eyesore. Best to cut the first flush of blooms pretty quickly.

Interesting, I have never experienced the flopping. I’m in a dry area and I don’t plant mine in rich soil or fertilize them. Maybe you live where there in consistent and/or generous rain?

Mine flop too and it doesn't hardly ever rain in the summer here in Redmond, WA. And my pink, white and red yarrow also turn brown. I pretty much do what you do. 😃

Hi Laura, I really enjoy these type of videos about seeds and the plants that they amazingly grow into. Thanks so much for these informative videos. I notice that you rarely follow through on the progression of the seeds 'growth journey', from seeds through to flowers. It would be enormously appreciated if you would share the stages of the young plants growth, right through to how the flowers look in bouquets. You are such a gifted florist Laura, just like your talented mum. It was inspiring to see how the zinnia seeds you planted grew into such a beautiful salmon-coloured display in one of your flowerbeds. I have been gardening for most of my life, but it never ceases to amaze me how just planting a few relatively inexpensive seeds can grow into a showy floral display. It is evidence that anyone who knows how to plant seeds in the correct way for that variety or species, can grow plants. They do not have to pay a lot of money for established plants to put in their garden-bed and they still a stunning floral display. It would be so encouraging, and interesting to see the reality of what happens to many of the seeds that you plant; yes, a follow up of their performance and where they end up in your garden. It would also be good to know about the seeds that require specific conditions in order to germinate, especially for those of us that live in warmer climates. As a gardener myself, I am always learning about new growing techniques but most of all - new plant varieties! How very exciting.

I start my digitalis foxgloves in the autumn. At the moment they are around 3 inches tall. I’ve another load that are a small seedling with 3 to 4 leaves and I’ll start another batch in a couple of weeks. They are my favourite.
