Two hacks my mother taught me for if I have children: 1. When you want to get them to do something (i.e. go to bed, take a bath, etc.) give them a 'choice' (i.e. Do you want to go to bed at 8:00 or 8:30? Do you want to take a bath in this bathroom or mine?) and 2. (situational) If they break something important or mess something up (i.e. Markers on the T.V. screen) Instead of fixing it immediately, leave it for a couple of days (if you can) and if they ask "Why can't we watch T.V." you tell them "We can't watch T.V. because theres marker all over the screen, you shouldn't have done that :( " (a little cruel but effective)

I haven't ever given my child a choice when it's bed time bath time or any other time, a strict schedule and reliable activities is much better for everyone involved. Every child I have seen who gets choices abuses them and turns Into snotty brats. I've used my own idea from the day my children were born, all have slept through from six weeks on wards all have eaten what ever I gave them for dinner/lunch/breakfast (although now my eldest gets to choose between a warm breakfast or a cold one) children should learn that when they are told (it's bath time/bed time/dinner time) that it has to be done. What does giving a child a choice achieve but for them to learn negotiation or complete avoidance is except able at any given time. Heaven forbid the child demands a negotiation in public when they don't want to leave a theme park? Or swimming pool?... No way in hell would I let my child make a total idiot of me, your own child's behaviour is ALWAYS a reflection of the parent/s

horsecrazieneigh I think it's very important children learn to make choices, debate, and have an influence in their life. They should be raised as a growing person and not a slave. I tell my little brother to call me out if he honestly thinks something isn't fair and we'll talk about it. I never want to raise a child who thinks they have to do everything someone says just because they are older, it can lead to some scary and depressing situations. I want them to say no, to put their reasoning to words, to question authority. I rather risk a debate with a child than risk something horrible all because they didn't know what their rights were or how to say no.

  • @horsecrazieneigh

If you know your child well enough as I do, I know when she doesn't want to do something and I'll know the reason depending on the situation. If it's because she isn't sure/uncomfortable or any other negative thing that's not where I would force my child to do something she doesn't want to do. If she's refusing to do something because she wants to watch the last five minuets of some crap tv show or because she wants something she can't have then that's when she is made to do something without choices. Everything can be taken out of context which is what you've done I don't blame you everyone has their own opinion. I do not believe in forcing a child to do anything when they feel frightened or unsafe.

Completely 100% agree. Give them the illusion of choice and they will have a happier mind having a degree of flexibility and control in their life. This also primes them to be leaders later down the track as you have built their confidence in the ability to make decisions. Also telling children the benefits of doing things instead of the why is more effective.

I used to get corrected constantly in school for how I type. I can't do the finger orientation (asdf, jkl;) they teach in schools. I type much better, faster, and more accurately by "hunting and pecking", but as soon as I line up my fingers, I focus on the keys and not what I'm writing. Instead of forcing kids to do things a certain way, they should be taught the "correct" way, but allowed to do it however it is most effective for them.

The "Monster Repellent" reminds me of something my parents did when my siblings and I had nightmares. They took baby powder and sprinkled it around our pillows, as well as put a little on our blanket, and called it "Dream Powder". Cheesy looking back on it, but I can still remember how safe and relaxed I felt when they did it.

When i was younger i would be scared of going to the kitchen at the night (still am) so my mom gave me a stick and called it monster whacker. So one night I was going to the kitchen with my monster whacker and my brother always liked to scare me. So he hid in the kitchen with a mask on and the lights off, and as i was opening the door he jumped out and scared me. Since he was wearing a mask i thought he was a monster so i whacked him and went to my mom and told her I killed a monster so she came with me and my brother was on the floor. So on the spot she grabbed my stick and snapped it.

I couldn't leave the table until I ate all my vegetables when I was a kid. And I'm not some old guy who grew up 'in the good ol days' either. I'm 22. Has parenting gotten to the point where we have to bribe our kids to eat healthy by putting sprinkles on everything? I guess when we live in the generation of teen parents who are raising their kids while still in high school, who really has time to discipline their child right? .... *sigh* sad.

mimiko xfz blowing it super out of proportion, If its my kid Ill force him to eat the veggies because that IS healthy for the kid and in the long run teach him/her that thats food. My house won't be a hotel so the kid can order around what he/she wants to eat, it'll eat what everyone else is eating. That right there is parenting, you're in your childs life to teach it rules, and discipline not to be its friend.

If you cut a coin in half or write on a dollar no one cares but when you take a 10$ bill and alter it so it looks like it's a 100$ bill thats illegal. Rishi Jusia I babysit for a living, and there is one little girl that I have to use little hacks like this. If you tell her to just eat it, she'll scream. I've been told by some people to put her in time out (Where she just gets up, and walks away) and others to spank her (which, she isn't my kid, so that could cause a law suit) So the little hacks and tricks work well. She's only 3 so we can't find out the reasons, she's just stubborn and knows if she screams she'll get her way with her parents. But she's learning it doesn't work with us.

(FYI - I have a 25, 19 and 15 year old whose fondest memories involve tooth fairies, easter bunnies, etc. and no resentment in the least) 2. See #1) 3. not worth the explanantion 4. See #1 again. As for defacing money...not illegal. As long as the serial number and value are intact and/or unaltered you can color, glitter, draw or write messages on paper currency. The same is not true for coins. As for making kids sugar junkies....ummm, if you buy and eat pre-packaged foods...chances are they already are. A few sprinkles aren't going to hurt.

Stephanie Seyfried I remember how sad I was when I found out that my mom had a small plastic container full of the exact same glitter the tooth fairy left on windowsills. Eventually I also found her stash of my and my sister's teeth in her jewelry box. I don't remember ever TRULY believing the tooth fairy was real, but this kind of ruined the fun of it for me.

Well, I'm only 12 here so I might not know the best, but I don't like the bath one, the tooth fairy one, the monster one, or the sprinkles one. The bath one isn't very good because it could easily make messes by the water going through the basket holes. the tooth fairy one isn't very good because 1. What's it gonna do? It's not gonna do anything to your kid. Plus it just wastes money. The monster one isn't good because it just convinces kids that monsters are real. And the sprinkles one isn't good because then if you do that to your kid's food, they'll start expecting sprinkles on everything, and when you finally stop putting sprinkles on the food, the kid will start crying most likely and it will just get annoying :T

When I was younger, my parents made up a currency for the tooth fairy and gave me a little jar to put them in. I decorated the jar with super hero stickers and glitter and all kinds of things I found lying around, I thought it was like the best thing ever. They said that when I was older I could exchange them for dollars and buy something nice for myself. Anyway, it's a weird story, but I thought it was cute, and I guess my parents were teaching me to save up my money, instead of spending it on something meaningless. It was a nice message :)

I think sprinkles are nasty, but even adding sugar to any of those foods would be gross. I can't imagine broccoli with sugar all over it. What happened to a little butter and salt? Kids don't like butter and salt now, they need sugar on everything? Might as well just let them eat fast food every meal. Childhood diabetes is at an all time high, so lets' put sprinkles on everything. What do the kids do when they go to school, and they are given the choice to use the salad bar? You think they will touch that? or just grab some tater tots and ketchup packs? This is why most people in america are fat. Seriously, I get making things fun, but setting your kids up to fail? The one commenter that said their parents told them Broccoli was trees and they were giants had a good mom. You don't have to bribe your kids with sugar in order to get them to eat. You can make things fun WHILE being responsible.

Well, to the laundry basket: first: you would not let a toddler have a bath alone, they can drown even in puddles, but the thought is good. Monster spray is ok, the little ones see the world in a different way than we do and the phase when they think there are monsters passes by. No matter if you join in the game or keep telling them that there are no monsters. The tooth fairy money does not make sense to me, and it does not make anything easier. The sprinkles on everything is complete bullshit. It does not help and it's not healthy, you should cook good and fresh from the beginning. If your kid does not eat the damn broccoli then it is not hungry. Dont make your baby used to the baby food in glasses, i tried them and the spinach for example did not taste like spinach, it was gross.

Bubbles are good. Sprinkles and glitter aren't, unless you like endless cleaning. And I do literally mean endless. If you are going to allow sprinkles and glitter at all, they should be used at a picnic table in the back yard, and only on very special occasions such as birthdays. And careful where you put those "projects" after they have been sprinkled and glittered to within an inch of their lives! Add some lavender scent to the "monster repellant." It's an olfactory cue to relax. Vanilla is relaxing too. Make sure the spray bottle you use doesn't leak if it's tipped on its side. Many spray bottles do. Monster repellant is fun, but make sure you demonstrate to your kids that there isn't really anything under the bed (unless it's used for storage and there really is stuff under there.) Monster repellant is for "just in case" it's invisible. If the kid is still truly afraid of the dark, a nightlight may actually be a better choice for reassurance. When I was little, I was afraid of a ghostly-looking white garment bag hanging in the closet until I recognized what it was with the light on. (The closet door was left open most of the time.) After I knew what it was, it was no longer scary.
